Machine ID #s

I just set up 4 boxes running F@H and i guess i set them all to Machine ID #1. Can i change there # after they have started folding or do i need to wait till they finish and delete the console then reload it so i can run config again?

I was reading the FAQ thing, and it made it sound like you could only have machines 1-4, is that for running 4 instances on 1 box or is that total? I know a lot of you are running alot more than 4 boxes.

can i do this while they are working on a unit or will it mess up the results?

Machine ids are only needed for multiple processors in the same box. So you're fine. You don't need to change anything if you are running multiple computers.

Fold on.

As long as they are 4 separate boxes, it should be ok to have them all ID#1. If you are running more than 1 instance on the same box (i.e. hyperthreading or dual processor), then you can't have two identical machine ID# on the same box. The reason you can have up to 4 ID#s is because some people are running dual hyperthreading P4 processors, so they can run 2 instances of F@H2 on each CPU, 4 instances total.

There are 2 id's two be worried about :)
There is one stored in the registry, user id, and one for the machine -
[22:23:33] - User ID = 3F6149774A8CC6A7
[22:23:33] - Machine ID: 2
In each installation of WinDoze OS you can have only 1 user ID. However, with V4, you can have up to 8 (1 through 8) instances per OS installation (and perhaps the number 0 still works, but I have not tried it).

They need to fix that.

So - if you've made separate installations on each machine no problemo.
If you want more instances per machine, you need to run the executable with the -config flag (hand editing may be dangerous).

Now you may wonder why run more than 1 instance per machine ?
An excellent example is run FAH at low and run an instance of GAH at idle. If for some reason FAH stops - server down, bad WU, net down, a fully loaded GAH with 10 instances should last a week, And suck up all those excess cycles.

The reason i wanted to change them was so that my stats registered the right amount of active processors instead of just 1.

As the different machines start to return the wu's then Standford will start to see the other cpu's. Probably, only one has returned a work unit.

Fold on.

You might want to run EMIII or a similar app which makes it easy to check things like the config file and also what the id is etc.

You don't need to change anything dude, you're fine. You'll have different User ID's on each box to take care of that. Fold on.

Well thats what i thought it was supposed to do but after 14 WU it still is just showing 1 processor. It doesnt really matter i suppose. Thanks for the help

Did you by chance copy and paste the original folding@home directory to another folder and/or computer instead of installing it fresh?

I just looked at your stats page and it shows "Active processors (within a week) 2" right now. On another page I have access to it shows 3 user id numbers so your stats page should show 3 active processors soon. It usually takes a little while after the first WU done under a new user id# shows up as an additional processor.

Any chance you cloned a Windows drive to one of these other machines? If you did, you also cloned the registry key containing the user id# to the other machine and that is bad. The active processors showing on the stats page is a total of the different user id#s your using. If two of your machines have identical user id#s they will appear to Stanford to be one computer. You also stand a good chance of getting the same WU on 2 machines and you only get credit for doing a WU once. I would check your logs carefully and see if each machine has a unique user id#. I only see 3 user id#s so far, but maybe one of the machines hasn't turned in a WU yet.

I noticed one of your machines is running Linux. The Linux client is a little different. the user id# is stored in a file called machineindependant.dat in the F@H folder because Linux doesn't have a registry. If you copy a client install from one Linux machine to another you will end up with the duplicate user id issue though because you copied the machineindependant.dat file also.

The user id#s I see are:
177506FB4AXXXXXXCE (WinXP)
1A8E15813CXXXXXX2A (WinXP)
5F73821611XXXXXX47 (Linux)

You have another issue on one of your machines. It appears one of your machines may not be stable. The machine with user id# 1A8E15813CXXXXXX2A (WinXP) turned in a p922 (run 6, clone 5, gen 51) WU and you only got 0.15 for credit instead of the normal 31.00 points you should have received. It could have been an issue with that particular WU or your computer may have issues. I would check the log on that machine carefully for WUs that ended early.

Good deal, when i posted originally it only showed 1. What other page are you checking out that gives you so much detail? Ive only been looking at: stanford, Horde, and Folding.extremeoverclocking.

I checked on that WU and it came up with a error 101 (mentioned something about system stability, overclocking, etc) if i remember correctly and completed 0%, i just loaded another unit and kept going. So im not sure if it was my system or the unit. That particular box is a 2.4C @ 3.14 so its entirely possible it became unstable. It is also running seti.

as for only 3 active processors on 4 boxes....my poor PII 300 Mhz is being raped by a TINKER so... it hasnt finished anything yet.

It will probably not finish that tinker. A box running at 300 mhz is pretty slow and might make it if its on 24-7. Run it with G@H; that has no deadlines, I hear. I might be wrong.

Sorry, it's not a public page.

I think this Windows XP machine needs some tweaking, it just turned in another WU before it finished. You only received 24.77 points for a 29.7 point WU.

User ID#: 1A8E15813CXXXXXX2A
WU: 917 (Run 2, Clone 83, Gen 19)
Credited: 24.77 points at 12:07:14 02-23-2004
