Ok, here's the deal, I have a picky...PICKY, Mac fan boy....Who wants to build his first PC...But wants a Mac looking case, however he does kinda like the looks of the CM Cosmos but sounded like he didn't really want it. He also plans on loading one of the Mac OS's on it, which makes no sense to me, since about the only thing he runs is Microsoft office...I am also guessing getting a Mac Pro case is out of the questions as I doubt they use anything close to ATX mobo's etc. I also just don't like the looks of the inside and the limit of 4 drive bays. But whatever, I am looking for cases that have the "mac pro" look and feel to them, I don't think he wants to spend a load of money on this case either, so at least try and keep it under $200, but if you have something that's just like it, post it anyway, as he is crazy enough to pay for it I'm sure.

Any ideas to maybe sway this guy over to a more normal case? I have tried everything but he is just stuck on the Mac look, and it's just getting old lol. AND maybe getting him to use Vista or Win7 when it comes out, he has never tried Vista but has bought into the "evil Vista" hype and will not touch it. He's using XP on his other machines (other than his Mac's that is). However I don't know the selling points for any Mac OS, I have never liked them, so maybe someone can draw some lines of the two so I can at least get him to give Vista or Win7 a try?

The Lian Li PC-V2000 is about as Mac Pro as you can get without buying a Mac Pro case and customizing it yourself.

Have him buy or "obtain" a copy of Parallels 4.0 or VMware Fusion 2 and run Vista or Win7 in one of his 'spaces'. I would warn against having Vista as his first option unless the Mac he's running it on has 2gb of RAM to dedicate to it, or 4gb minimum with Parallels dynamic memory allocation. I use Win7 RC1 in my Parallels at work on my iMac when I don't want to boot up my laptop and it runs very well, Vista on the other hand is pretty sluggish because my iMac only has 2gb of memory to play with total.

i recall someone modding a mac pro case to fit ATX on the [H] and it was for sale.. try searching the case modding & fs/ft forums.

If you're going to be modding PC parts into it you can probably pick up an old G5 or just the case from one cheap. A lot of the old G5s are failing or just too slow to use and people are just throwing/giving them away if you can find the right places to look. Might be worth a shot. You've got a lot of modding to do to get it to look good though.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, but he has seen a few Lian Li cases and turned his nose up to them. I also DO NOT plan on modding a case for the guy, and he has no skill to do it him self. He will also not be using Vista on a Mac, he wants to use the Mac OS on a PC, so the other way around. And he has PC's (4 of them) along with 5 G4's just laying around, I even offered him one of my PC's (with Vista on it) for him to give it a test drive for a week or so. It's not a matter of getting him access to a Vista PC, but rather getting him to use it without a gun to his head. I am just trying to get him to understand a Windows OS is the way to go for what he wants and what he will use it for, but he just wont hear it.

First of all: What does he want to do (In terms of operating system not just looking like a mac)?

Second of all: If you have a customer that's so stubborn he will not listen to your advice and will not consider any of your suggestions truthfully you might consider dropping him. Yeah, the loss of potential money sucks but sometimes it's better just to not deal with it. It sounds like he really wants a Mac and even though it might not suit his needs you might be better off just sending him to the apple store or website and getting yourself out of this situation.

Using OS X on a PC lands one in 'hackintosh' territory, which is something I'd only recommend as a hobby, not for a day-to-day system.

It sounds me like this guy doesn't want a PC at all, but just a Mac with OS X.

He's not a customer, hes a friend. It's also not my idea to build him a PC, it's his. He wants to get his hands a little dirty and I am going to walk him through building it. And he has more than enough Mac's as it is, wile most of them he has had for 5+ years, he does have newer ones. It's his PC's that are all aging bad and he uses the PC 90% of the time, for like I said, Microsoft office and web surfing. So I am trying to make him understand what makes a Mac a Mac is the OS, and if he loads a Mac OS on it it's just going to end up not getting used like all the others and he is still going to be left with using old run down PC's

This I know, and I don't want to deal with it, as I know if anything goes wrong I will be the one having to go and fix it. I told him right off I will help him build the PC, but its up to him when it comes to the OS and any problems that come from it.

Just do whatever for him, then laugh at him when the first auto update kills the OSX install.

Umm, did you check my link? Some guy on the forums is selling an already modded for ATX G5 case.

Lol, yes I saw it, and thanks, but as I said, he is picky and doesn't really do "used".

So clean look with door?

How about Lian Li A10, A71, B10 or B25

Thanks for the links, I am trying to get him to spend less on the case and more on the guts, and I think I might just have had a good hit off him from a RocketFish case. :D

find better friends. i do not trust this guy one bit.

I think we are on the same page. :p;):D

I want a slow G5! Where can I sign up to get one?

How's that really used? i mean it's a fully modded working case.... Wow... He's stuck than because if i were him thats what i'd do. I mean it's in his budget. If he's really that picky tell him to pick a case and when he has to call you.

Lian Li will probably be your best bet. maybe something like the v1000/1100/1200

I love my v1000b :D

V1000 is closer than the V1200 or V2000.
V1000Z would be the closest thing you'll find *now* probably because the older V series cases have been phased out and most stores will not be restocking.

...and I second your closing thought. :D

This. Plus you better make sure he buys a board that's actually compatible; most of the G3x boards are safe bets...the rest is hit and miss because you're running a Hackintosh with products that have no Apple drivers. Check the OSX86 page for compatible stuff and more info there, but yeah...tell him if he wants a Mac, buy a Mac. He won't get the ultimate experience running a Hackintosh, and IMO Vista or Win7 is a better alternative to OS X anyway.

(Before anyone questions, no I don't own a Mac but yes I do use a G5 all day at work; and yes, I prefer Windows to OS X.)

I don't even try to understand anymore. Because he is always right.

Hell, I'm not doing anything! If he doesn't listen to me and goes the way he is headed and gets hardware that wont work...not my problem, maybe he will install Vista or Win7 then. :D

Why doesn't he just use Parallels with WinXP or so on his Mac?

boot camp?
and i would say silverstone/Lian Li makes a better case than apple.
(I took apart a G5 to replace a burnt out PSU just last night)

I have built one hackintosh a friend of mine uses daily. If hardware choice is done well it can be used daily.

Why doesn't he just use Parallels with WinXP or so on his Mac?

Because he would not dare bring anything close to his ("All Mighty") Mac that's made by "M$". And because once he gets an idea in his head (that is to build a PC) your not going to change his mind. I am just getting tired of it though, I have not heard a solid word about the other cases, meaning he probably does not like them, and if he doesn't I'm just going to tell him best of luck with the build and walk out, I have enough ignorant people in my life as it is. ;) :D

Wow what a douche.
[points at door] 'There's the door, typical snobby Mac elitist.' is exactly what I'd say to him.

I have nothing against Apple fans or Microsoft fans. Be a fan for all I care. Act high and mighty - and I refuse to work with you. If I were you - I'd tell him to sod off.
OS X has it's pros and cons, no different than Windows or *nix. Anyone who thinks otherwise (and it sounds like this 'guy' does)...I have no patience to bother with them.
Sounds like he wants to build a Mac without paying the Steve Jobs price tag; in the words of GlaDOS, "ha ha, fat chance". :D

Wow, I don't get it. The Lian Li V1000/1010 is pretty much identical to a Power Mac/Mac Pro case without the goofy handles. Not to mention that they can hold a lot more hardware, especially the newer models.

I'd tell this douche bag to go copulate with himself and build his own damn computer or get raped on a new Mac Pro.
