Anyone have an easy and cheap/free way to convert iTunes songs to mp3? I can't stand anything but Winamp, and so I want to convert the songs I've purchased into something Winamp can play.
 
Itunes stuff is encrypted, and I don't think that anyone has broken that encryption yet. Try a google search on the subject, perhaps somebody has and I don't know about it.
 
Jsu: Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware there was such a thing yet. Anyone tried this yet to see how well it works?
 
I just downloaded it but when I double-click on hymn.exe, an MS-DOS window pops up and closes just as quickly. I dunno what it says nor what the problem is.
 
I doubt it's an error, it said it was a command line driven decrypter. It's probably just closing right off the bat because you aren't passing any arguments to it, so it shuts down.

I got Hymn to work. It works quite well. I'm not real familiar with DOS and command lines, but I eventually figured it out.

Once I used Hymn to convert the m4p songs to mp4, I used dbPowerAmp Music Converter (after finally downloading the right codec) to convert the mp4 into mp3. Phew. I'm so excited to not need iTunes to play the m4p songs!
 
Every time you convert from lossy to lossy formats, like AAC to MP3, you'll lose quality, and when the songs are only encoded at 128Kbit/sec, there's not going to be much of a margin either. I'd strongly recommend NOT doing that. It's the equivalent of recording a CD to a tape, and then recording back to a CD again.
 
Actually it isn't that bad, or it's barely noticeable.

Ultimately I still have the iTunes songs in their original form.
 
Kinda off topic but, "alt + print screen" takes a screen shot of the active window. no need to crop!!! :D

Another method is to burn the itunes to audo CD, then rip the CD to the codec of your choice. .

Course the same holds true that you are going from a lossy to lossy which is a bad thing. I suggest buy the CDs and rip em, skip the iTunes crap.

Seriously though, you DO NOT want to convert lossy -> lossy. It's just plain wrong, and it'll make baby jebus cry :)
