Dozens of them at work and a few at home.

Not sure what the big deal is. I've had a like unit for a couple years now, for the same reasons one might have a USB-SATA HDD adapter.

Also, compared to typical USB flash drives, such a setup will be faster and more durable (i.e., better quality flash chips).

Though it's hard to seriously call this a "thumb drive" when it's nearly the size of a candy bar.

I use them rather frequently, yes. At least several times a year when I use them for OS installs and for booting rescue images.
