I realize that the LGA775 is beyond obsolete, but I always would love to go back to a legacy build for the hell of it. That platform was my first and always worked well for me. Anyone have that type of nostalgia?

I have a 8800 GT that I've been thinking about basing an old skool build around.

I picked up the original Alienware Aurora Tower that is a Slot A Athlon CPU, was thinking of putting either new parts in or something "newer" from the 2004-2006 range.

I would argue that 775 is still a pretty interesting platform.
You can have DDR3 memory, Quad core CPUs, decent chipsets like the P45.

I am typing this from my home computer that is a E7500 @ 3.9GHz, 3 Gigs of RAM. Glorified type writer/browsing/movie/light gaming computer. Dirt cheap when I got it.

I do see a type of nostalgia in myself when dealing with 775 systems. Mostly for the very wide range of CPUs, overclockability (really easy with FSB), low price.
They still do the job just fine if you need, say, a low power fileserver - like when you have a mobo with the ICH10r. Or a computer for an old person or young child for learning purposes.

Or, the trick where you can get a socket adapter and run Xeons on it and thus have a quad core system for peanuts.

They supported basic virtualization, speedstep/c1e...

Also, the Core 2 really changed things back in the day. Like the K8 before them. Remember OMG Cornrows? :D

Lol...fair enough. First computer I ever built was a P4 Northwood on an Abit motherboard. I splurged for 2x512MB DDR1 memory :D.

939 is great for w98 boxes.
Nearly sold my x800xt... I think it'll be rejuvenated another day on a oppy 165 w98/xp gaming rig build.

Still use a C2D in a travel laptop lol.

It might be fun on some level to rebuild an old machine. I've watched a couple YouTube videos of guys resurrecting old 386 and 486 machines, and it's fun to watch.

Then I imagine spending that time and money on something new instead, and go that route.

Depends how much you can live with it. I have a Retro Rig based off a LGA 775 setup.
Intel Core2Extreme QX9650 CPU - eBay is your friend
Intel DP45SG Motherboard - you'll want to look at P45 chipset boards likely
8 GB DDR3 1333 RAM - (use RAM approved for motherboard) I have 2x 2 GB 1333 Corsair Dominator in there - it did not like all 4 sticks > so there are 2x 2 GB sticks of approved Kingston Ram from an eBay find
NVidia GTX 650 2GB graphics card
500 GB Hybrid Hard drive (upgrade to an SSD in future)
LG DVDRW
Corsair 750 Watt PSU
Zalman Heatpipe Tower to handle the CPUs High TDP - fairly silent.

It plays Diablo III and MechWarrior Online well enough. The only things to do for an upgrade, is a better video card (which I don't need to, really); and maximize the SATA II throughput by swapping an SSD in there in place of the Hybrid Hard Drive.....
Also does a nice job of crunching numbers for SETI@Home....

While I do have an appreciation for the 300a, I even fondly remember the two 366's in a BP6 board that oc'd well, but my fondest time was slot A. In fact, during some transitional moving recently, I found my golden fingers that took my slot A 650 to 1 GHz.

Nope, socket A was my first personal build.

I am not as much fond of the platform but rather the time it was. Socket A represents the most LAN parties, UT2004, CS1.6, CODUO, a wonderful ATI 9800pro (that everyone also owned), and heavily modified cases. It was a time when you would meet up on XFIRE (the program) to play a game together.

Now those friends are spread out everywhere. Sure we have skype, discord, teamspeak, etc...but its not the same. Even LAN's today aren't as much fun because you can't simply obtain a game and play together for the night.

I've wanted to throw together a Socket 7 K6-3+ with a Voodoo 5… can't justify the price being asked for the old tech though :-(

HAHA. I have a Voodoo 5-5500 that I purchased brand new from the store.

And I recently got another one for about 1/2 of what they normally go for now.. or less since the price seems to have gone up in the last couple months.

You just have to watch like a hawk to get the good deals.

My first computer was a 386sx-25. Within a few months I had already started upgrading stuff.

My first build was a 386DX-40.

I am pretty sure that there are people on here that were building before that.

I'm working on putting together a number of retro builds.

Check out VOGONS if you really want to see some retro action and get ideas.

It's difficult to find a P6 SLI Diamond in my case. The asking price is insane the last time I checked.

Son, real nostalgia would be an ABIT BP6 w/ 2x Celeron 300As @ 450MHz, with 10k rpm Seagate Cheetahs hooked up to
an Adaptec SCSI HA that has its crystal replaced to run at PCI > 33MHz :)

I've been looking for a Vesa Local Bus adapter for a spare Cirrus Logic 5428 gfx card thats going to waste.
It renders cubes elegantly.

I had dual celeron 300As overclocked. I had 15K Cheetahs (and a few 10K Enterprise drives) on a 45 Port Adaptec ultra wide scsi 3 adapter but not sure if I had both at the same time.

lol lust for the old...I'm not decrepit at the ripe old age of late 30's...but my first x86 machine was this dude. So maybe games of knock off Qbert, Puck Man, and all that shit. Anyone remember a game called Questron?
Compaq_PortableII_System_s2.jpg

The first family computer was a commodore 64.

First super private computer (as in my personal gif porn machine at the ripe old age of 13) was a Compaq Presario DX100 with 512 hard drive and a blazing fast 8 mbs of ram. Running windows 3.1 with that Winbook interface that compaq had back in the day. That thing lasted me til 1999...ugh.

And the worst part is I probably represent Generation like 4 or 5 when it comes to the old dudes on this thread.

99% my original build (except for case and PSU)...have several other different period correct builds including 775...so to answer the OP's question....yes I do

Abit VP6 , 2 x PIII 1ghz @1140mhz , Voodoo 5500 AGP , dual boot W2K pro / XP pro , 2 gig Infineon memory , 3 x 18g scsi raid 0 , Kenwood TrueX 72x (the fastest CDR ever

My Q9650 at 4.4Ghz doesn't even really feel that old or slow. It's currently being used as an HTPC and still gets used for games on there sometimes. A Socket 775 system with a Quad Core CPU probably still has a good 5-10 years left in it for secondary uses (basic office computers, etc).

Ha!...an Abit BE6 i440BX , PIII 700 flip chip on Abit Slotket slot 1 adapter , Voodoo 3 3500TV , I forget the mem , creative sound

PDP8e only missing a few lightbulbs, the entire 4Kx12Bit Corestack, power supplies,
paper tape reader, and any sort of documentation. Homebrew 20MHz, not a DEC copy.
Complete, it filled a rack to the ceiling last I saw it functioning (44 years ago was it?)
10x overclock ain't bad for 1973...

Perhaps S100 makes for an easier project starter.

My good old Diamond Stealth II video card with its S3 Savage 2000 GPU. Say what you want, but it was THE best GPU for UT99 at the time allowing for use of the S3MeTaL API and higher res/detail S3TC textures.

I think the most fun I had, as far as tinkering and OC'ing, was with my Athlon 2500+ Barton, paired with an ATI 9500 Pro, and ASUS A7N8X Deluxe.

Also, getting a P3 550 stable at ~900GHz was cool.

900Ghz Ummmmmmm

I still use my Abit IP35 Pro with an E6750 CPU and 2 GB ram. In my closet I still have an Asrock Dual SATA 939 Mobo with an Opteron. Also have an Abit IC7G Max 3 socket 478 with Kingston BH5 ram somewhere. I have lots of old video cards too. Sometimes I look through my old stash and remember the old days.
