LSI 9260-8i Transfer Speed Issues

Banging my head into the wall on this one. I have a 9260-8i card with numerous drives attached. Everything "works" fine but I have throughput issues when transferring files. It ramps up to speed, and then down to zero and so on, and on. Any ideas?

Running the latest firmware on the card (12.15.0-0248) and latest drivers (that I could find).

Post more info on your config. RAID level, drives used, expander or direct connect, etc. My guess at this point is using consumer SSD's and the pause is for garbage collection.

RAID level at the moment is just single drive RAID0 (because the card won't do JBOD), but I do have one RAID0 striped across 2 drives for testing. Direct connect 8 drives, 7 rotating, 1 SSD. Airflow looks decent.

Well. One thing is certain: there is a whole hell of a lot of misinformation floating around if you put the google-fu to this question.

I've never tried to do what you're doing, but I get it. It's weird, but accommodating the quirks / limits of your hardware. My thoughts: make absolutely sure that card is getting air. It will run hot. This is no joke. What you're experiencing looks more like a thermal problem to me. Or (less likely, fault in drive, breakout cables, or card) Is the same behavior across different drives?

+1 definitely looks like a heat issue, especially where its located there in the 3rd to last slot with no fan on it.
Either mod a fan on it, or get a pcie blower out the back with a shroud to cool it.

Shouldn't be too hard to check for a heat issue if you rig up a temporary fan and then try to transfer files.

I've tried replacing breakout cables, changing PCI-E slots, and checking the temp in MegaCLI and MSM but there isn't a temp sensor on this card as far as I can see. The issue applies to all drives attached to the card, even the striped RAID0 set. I'll rig up a fan to push some air across the heatsink and see what happens.

I found a small chipset fan, attached it to the heatsink, but still the problem persists.

Ok so trying a few different things. If i start a file transfer FROM a drive attached to the 9260 to a drive that is NOT on the 9260 I get very consistent speeds. It seems the issue is only when transferring from one drive to another when they are both on the 9260.

Attached is a screenshot of a transfer from the striped RAID0 on the 9260 to my C: (860 EVO SSD)

I'm going to freely admit, I'm not that familiar with this. Could it be a caching issue?
