LSI 9202-16e - thoughts

Not sure if folks have seen these on ebay but very interesting cards. Apparently they are an OEM part with basically no design wins.

Instead of a LSI SAS2016 these use dual SAS2008 chips with a PLX bridge chip to feed a PCIe 2.0 x16 interface. Net result is you have a low profile single slot card that has 16 ports.

We have been getting these for under $250 shipped so not as inexpensive as the venerable M1015's but the big advantage is that you can get higher port density and it is a way to get 5GB/s out of a single slot.

Looking for a few more for a new build so if anyone sees them pop up please PM me. They are a bit hard to find. Hoping LSI does finally release these into the channel as they are one of the faster single slot cards around.
 
Yep those are good stuff; so bottom line is you're paying 25% more per port for the ability to figuratively merge two M1015's into a single PCIe slot. I can see that being advantageous for a lot of usage scenarios, mainly people short on PCIe ports. However, people with server class microATX boards like Supermicro's which don't features x16 PCIe slots will be stuck running this card in an x8 slot. Still plenty of bandwidth for most spinning disks in a group of 16, but might be bottlenecked with lots of SSD's or a mixture of both spinning and SSD.
