Low Profile Cooling

I have a need for some good cooling with less than 3" of clearance over the CPU. Any ideas gang?!?

- AM3
- X3 (possibly upgrading to X4, not that that matters)
- don't want to spend a fortune on liquid cooling or anything

See my situation here.

I think Scythe Shuriken Rev.B (not to be confused with the "Big Shuriken")...? It uses stock AM2/AMD3 mounts, too.

though my internet is very fast I clearly saw a single image loading :( from your thread. I'm sorry.

Is this it? With a height of 2.5" that should do. Thanks!

Trouble seeing the pics on the case mod thread? There a lot of pictures. That might be the problem?

Is there a selfcontained liquid cooling option that would fit? According to some H50 users it won't fit. Any others?

I just bought a Nexus Low-7000, Its 73mm tall including fan when mounted on an AMD board, thats @ 2,87 inches. It cools better than the Scythe and every other top down cooler. Do you plan on overclocking or just looking for something better than a stock cooler ? Prolimatech Samuel 17 is another option but the Nexus is better. I think Noctua also came out with a low profile unit, may be too tall for your application with fan, and probably not worth it to run fanless under your PSU.

I'm moving my system into a modded case I'm working on now. The clearance above the CPU is small, as aforementioned. So I will be maintain my OC stated in my sig. I'm using a Zalman 9700 in my rig now, but it's waaay to tall for the case I'm transplanting it into. See the link in my original post.

Thanks for the suggestion! :) 2.87" would fit, but doesn't leave much room for the fan to intake air.

I looked at your case mod thread before posting, and I myself will be transplanting the PC in sig to a smaller, less ventilated case (My old Silverstone SG02) with more or less the same vertical height restriction. I will let you know how my temperatures hold up with the Low-7000...

Awesome, let me know how it goes. Thanks Burnin8r

I can vouch for the Scythe Big Shuriken SCBSK-1000. It works well enough in keeping my Phenom II X4 910e cool in my slimATX HTPC system.

Roger that. That's what I like to hear. I might be driving over to MicroCenter to pick one up tomorrow. Not really any rush since my case mod isn't done yet. But I'd like to have it in my hands, do some measuring and what not.

I can also vouch for the Big Shuriken, just make sure it's compatible. On the box it says its compatible with Intel 478, 775, 1156, 1366, for AMD, 754, 939, 940, AM2, A2+, AM3.

Running a 4.5GHz overclock with it and it does a fine job of keeping it cool.

I've got an AM3 mobo so that should be okay. What kind of idle/load temps are you guys getting?

~38C idle, ~60C load. Prime95 can get it up to 80C but for all intents and purposes it's more than adequate.

That's pretty good. I'm guessing your i5 will run a little warmer than my X3? With my Zalman 9700 I get about 25* idle, can't recall load temps.
