I wanted to get a camera for an upcoming trip to Australia - one that had a good reputation, was easy to use, and would not set me back a lot of money. I won an Canon EOS 300D on eBay for $370 including shipping. I have heard that the kit lens is pretty decent for what is is and read the reviews on DPReview

My question is for low light photography (sunrises, sunsets) will a monopod work or should I get a tripod?

Holding something still for 20sec or so may be a bit ambitious - especially for a coffee drinker.

Depending on your technique you can get around 3 stops if you use a monopod. With your lens that means you can handhold ~1/4 sec on the wide end and ~1/12 sec on the long end.

That answers my question - I figure I can hold a camera still on once axis with a monopod, there are two others where I could affect the shot... Tripod here I come.

Monopods are usually used for sports because they're easy to move around and there's typically a lot of light in sporting events. It sounds like you'll be in lower light situations so I recommend a tripod

A tripod is the better choice, monopods are great for quick steadying and that is it.
