loud pop - computer shut off

friend of mine just heard a loud 'gunshot' pop from his computer and it shut off and won't turn back on after unplugging it for a while and cycling the I/O switch on the PSU after ~5 minutes.

I'm assuming it's his power supply (SeaSonic X850). I was going to have him test it via http://www.seasonicusa.com/RMABeta/JumpStart/JS.pdf but no paperclips or wire, lol... so I think tomorrow he's gonna go buy a PSU from Best Buy locally and put it in to see if it boots up.

I had him check for smells of smoke, checking caps on motherboard, etc... but didn't really find a 'smoking gun' so to speak.

he's running the following build, no OC yet:

i7-4770K
Hyper 212 EVO
Asus Z87-Pro
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB DDR3-1600
Gigabyte GTX 770 GDDR5-2GB
Samsung 840 250GB SSD

was running fine for a couple weeks now

Know anyone with a little PSU tester? They're usually pretty cheap (<$20) and may be a cheaper option than picking up a new PSU to test in case it's something else.

no, but he found a paperclip and was able to try that jump start test I linked and the fan didn't come on

I imagine he'll be able to return the 'new' PSU he buys tomorrow once the other is fixed.

Now he's telling me the S/N isn't being accepted as correct on the Seasonic website... :(

finding a decent power supply locally is proving to be a problem... 80924 zip code

Went through the exact same thing not that long ago. POP! *silence*

It was an Antec made by Seasonic...

There's a possibility the rma will take longer than however long returns are accepted at most stores.

Bestbuy, Office Depot, Staples, etc. Look at stores like that unless you have a Microcenter or Frys nearby. Be sure to check the return policy...

yeah he's driving up to a Microcenter now to get a corsair HX or coolermaster v-series replacement... ugh

The other thing you can do is just order a PSU from somewhere that you like, then RMA the old broken one. When the broken one comes in you just sell it as BNIB or refurb in box.

Better yet, keep it and then he'll have a Plan B if this happens again.

yeah the idea was to get back up and running asap though... this happened early sunday morning ~1am. Best bet was to buy a new one from MC and return it after the RMA repair comes back

Only thing is the fan on that psu doesn't turn on until it needs too, it wont turn on at idle, unless he flipped the switch to normal instead of hybrid. Better way to test would be to plug in an external fan and try the paperclip method.

Yeah, of course we put it on normal, not hybrid...

Also, the new temp PSU is working great, just played several rounds of chivalry with him with no issue

looks like after squinting through the cracks and past the fan of the PSU you can see a big black cap in the corner melted down and blown out the side... just wish we could open it up and take a pic or two without voiding the damn warranty :p

Happened to me once -a loud crack like a .22 being fired. The last Sparkle PSU I ever used! Luckily the rest of the components were ok.

Does the guy have a good UPS / good surge protector? If not I'd consider recommending they get one too, especially given the amount of bucks $$$ those parts cost.

The best PC can still get taken down by a bad ground / thunderstorm / etc. Happened to my boss' house a few times before she agreed to my recommendation to not rely on her cheapo surge protector - which didn't do anything to help at all - and finally invest in a good UPS.

Probably blew a capacitor, either in the PSU or on the motherboard.

Swap out the PSU and see if the other components were not harmed.. if it boots up, get the PSU RMA'd if it's under warranty.
