looking to tweak my setup

OK friends, I still refer to it as my "new" computer, but I started buy the components 18

months ago and built it a year ago. The reason I built was because I bought a game and it

wouldn't play. I've forgotten if it was Far Cry 2 or maybe Crysis. Anyway I got mad and

said thats it, I'm building a new one. The most demanding thing I do is gaming. I play MW2

a lot, but not much else. I recently got Bad company 2 but have only just begun the single

player mode. Other than that, just general web surfing In MW2, basically I stink. Now

there could be a lot of reasons for that. One, i'm 58 yrs old, so maybe I can't keep up with

the yoots. Maybe its my setup. I have a cable internet connection. Anyway, maybe I could

get a little edge with some tweaks or upgrades. With that in mind, what could I do to bring

my system up a little. My philosophy on computer building is that I never buy the latest &

greatest. I'm too cheap, so please don't suggest I buy xyz vid card for $500. You can tell

by what I bought 12-18 months ago. I probably spent $1100.00 on that build. I'd love some

suggestions. I'm willing to spend a little, obviously. Maybe $300 tops. I haven't oc'd

although I had planned on it. I recently dl'd Easytune. I do oc my older computer so I'm a

little familiar with it.

o_O your setup is good, i think you should work on your tactics. As the saying goes "...old men don't get to live on battlefield by fighting fair..."

Being 53 I get where you are coming from, as far as multiplayer shooter games I just gave up and went to MMO's and play a support class healer or mage. Damn kids. :D Although I did have a good career as a sniper but it was too slow paced for fun.

But you are on the right track. I like free, and if you pop up to the overclocking section we can help you get an easy 25-30% performance increase in your CPU for nothing with no reduction in stability or reliability. These core cpus have so much engineering headroom/unused potential (basically the design and manuf process was so good to start with they have trouble making a crappy CPU and so almost every single one wil run much faster than spec with no problems at all) its a shame to run them stock. Even with the stock heatsink you can tweak one up significantly to give the machine a kick in the pants.

We will want to make the changes in the bios however. Easytune is OK for checking out stuff/settings/voltages but the real changes should be done in the bios. The power saving freatures can even still be left active so when idle/web surfing your machine is throttled back.

After that, then see what you want to do.

So come on up and lets tune that baby up. A minor increase in CPU voltage, check the memory settings and voltage, and then just run up the FSB in reasonable increments and 3.4 - 3.6GHz is yours for free. This can be done over any period of time and in fact I recommend a slow rational march to some target OC with as much as a week in between settings changes to allow a real world test based on your machine usage.
