Let me first start by listing my current specs.

q6600 G0 @ 3.0ghz
Gigabyte P35-DS3R Mobo
8 gigs of DDR2 PC6400 ram
Corsair 550W powersupply
ATI HD 5850 Video Card.
Thermalake Ultra 120 Heatsink / fan
Antec 900 case.
1 x Intel x-25 160gig SSD
2 x 1TB WD HDDS
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Hey there everyone,

I am just realizing that my Q6600 is just not stacking up any more with the current games i play (Starcraft 2, Bad Company 2, COD: BO) .. i get decent FPS as i have a good Video card but i just notice that my cpu is maxing out alot during game play. It almost feels that if i had an upgraded CPU it would feel more smooth.

Now the conundrum i have is that if i want to upgrade my cpu i am pretty sure my board will not support it.. My ram is DDR2 so i will need DDR 3 for newer MB's.. my current board only has one PCI-E for Video Cards so upgrading my 5850 to crossfire is out..
If i do get a new board to get xfire'ed 5850's will my PSU @ 550w be enough..
if i get a new MB do i get say a 6900 series video card thats one card or do i go with the xfire..

I am not sure what upgrade path i should take and welcome any advice you can give.

Please i need some advice :D
 
What resolution do you play at? The 5850 is a very strong card still. If you did want to go cf on a pair of 5850's you would def need a new psu.

If am not mistaken your q6600 should be capable of 3.6ghz+ overclocking. Have you tried? If not I would highly suggest that you do this first.
 
I play at 1900x1200 resolution.

I have tried to OC the chip but i used to have a friend who was an expert OC'er now i live in a different city and i don't have the skillz to get the OC to work.. i tried to get it higher than 3.0 and i couldn't get it i stable.. but thats probably down to me not being any good at it.

but good to know i would need another PSU.. what wattage should i be aiming for 1000w?

Actually, for dual 5850s you need at least a 750W PSU.
 
Then wait till the second week of next month and ask again for build advice. By then we'll know what exactly Intel's new Sandy Bridge CPUs bring to the table.

With that said, if you can find the Q9550 for $160 to $170, then yes that'll be a good and compatible upgrade for you. If you can't, you're better off doing an entirely new build in January.

The one thing you should not be doing is buying another socket 775 motherboard. That is not a plan at all as socket 775 is effectively a dead-end platform at this point.
