I'm looking to do a really cheap upgrade from my S939 system - the total budget is $250 (Canadian). So far I've selected the E5200 processor ($108) and 2GB of Kingston DDR2/667 RAM ($28) for a total of $156 - 13% sales tax must also be factored in. A few dollars here or there doesn't make a difference, but the total must stay within the $250 range. I'm not looking to do heavy overclocking, but a little would be nice. The existing hard drives/optical drive/video card/power supply will be transferred to the new system, so no recommendation is needed for that.

G33/ICH9 is probably the best I'm going to do for now, but could I get away with a G31/ICH7 mobo? The mobo will never see more than 4GB of RAM, but I will be doing RAID (RAID 0 now, possibly RAID 5 later when it gets turned into a NAS).

What would you recommend?

I used a G31/ICH7 board for a year (Gigabyte). Great board...OC'd my Q6600 to 3.3Ghz (same as my P5Q Pro). I don't think you'd notice the difference between ICH7 and ICH9. I wished it had DVI, but I ended up getting a cheap PCIe card.

You'll need an add-on card for RAID though unless you get a board with the ICH9R.
