so yes right know Im installing linux and I was wondering what I could do to make it prettier than the default settings (something similira like the guys at the screenshot thread)

I dont know jack about linux so dont get too technical on me

gnome? kde? xfce4? fluxbox?

Basically what WM are you going to be running?
 
If you are a gnome user check out compiz-fusion. There are a lot of nice themes out there plus it runs pretty darn well.
 
I installed the gnome Art Manager, Screenlet Manager and Awn Manager. I'm a new linux user, but I was able to come up with a nicer desktop environment using these apps. The Art Manager in particular is a nice, easy way to play around with themes.
 
I am using Linux Mint 7 on my Laptop.. a very graphically pleasing Distro based on Ubuntu 9.04
and has most drivers built in, even Wireless worked out of the box.. Anywho here is a screenshot from the site (too lazy to take my own screenshot lol.... )

Perhaps you are looking for Compiz? The 3d rotating cube wobbly windoes etc? Most modern distros has it built in.

In Fedora System > Preferences > Desktop Effects > Compiz
 
Yeah, definitely check out gnome-look.org, and since you're using Ubuntu go to the system preferences and increase the visuals to the best setting. I'm not on my Linux install right now, so I can't remember exactly how to get there, but Ubuntu will install any needed drivers/software and enable Compiz. You might have to toy with some options, keyboard shortcuts, etc., to get some of the effects the way you want them.

If you're looking at having a dock on your desktop there's numerous solutions. I've never tried any of them, so I don't know which ones are better then others, but just google "Linux Docks" or something along those lines.
 
^^ in regards to the docks. AWN is a simple and easy one.

AWN = Avant Window Navigator
 
I always had issues with AWN so lately I have been using Cairo Dock. Perhaps you should give both a try and see which one you like better
 
If you're a fan of Windows Aero or the Exposé stuff from MacOS you can install/enable Compiz Fusion. A quick search on Google/YouTube will give you some examples of what to expect once it's all set up and tweaked.
