my budget is around 60 dollars. my system is only an oc'ed athlon xp-m with a 9800 pro and 1 hard drive but i'd like to have something that can also power my next computer build without any problems. thanks.

Well what is your next computer build gonna have? It is hard to recommend a forward looking PSU if you have no idea what future parts you're gonna use.

Anyway, get this PSU:
Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU - $60

It should let you have a new moderate gaming rig.

it's probably gonna be a budget oc builld. i'm not planning on sli or anything just a single mid range graphics card.

of my future build? i have no idea yet but it's probably gonna be am2. my current motherboard is a shuttle an35n ultra.

I don't know that board....but does it have a P4/AUX connector?

what about the corsair vx450? antec doesn't seem terrible reliable.

what do you think is the best video card the corsair can handle? would it cause any problems to use an adapter to get another pci-e connector if i need it? how good is corsair with rebates? thanks.

The Corsair 450 and Antec 500 are almost identical on the inside, so either would be a good option, just grab the lowest price.

The 450VX will handle just about any single video card out now. Granted you may need to use a molex to PCI-E adaptor but the 450VX is more than enough to handle many cards out that.

actually i'm thinking about spending the extra 15 dollars for the 550 so i can have more headroom for overclocking. does anyone know how much louder the 550 is than the 450? did corsair ever fix the problem with buzzing noises?

You are not going to notice any difference in overclocking between the 450 and the 550.

so i won't have any problems running something like an e2180 @ 3 ghz and an 8800 gt on the 450? what about sli with this? just want to be sure...thanks for the help.

Yes the 450VX will be enough for your setup. However, the 450VX is not a good choice for SLI. The 550VX is the better choice for SLI, However SLI is worthless if you're gaming at 1920x1200 or have a 24"+ monitor.

i ended up with the 450vx. it looks like the 4+4 p4 connector came pre split for some reason. does it matter which side i plug in? is it nessesary to snap the extra 4 pins on the main power connector off or can i just leave them hanging off the end?

I believe only one side will fit, I'd have to look at mine to see for sure though. But they're both wired the same way, so either does fit, it doesn't matter which one you use.

As for the extra 4 on the main connector, you can leave them attached as long as they don't interfere with board mounted components.

well looks like the 450 has quality issues just like the 550... it seems there's a low rattling noise coming from the fan. it comes and goes like every 15 minutes. it's not a huge deal but it's a little annoying because corsair has known about the problems with the 450/550vx fans for a long time and they have done nothing to fix the it.

hmm, never heard of that problem, nor have I heard it on my 450VX. Talk to Redbeard or the other Corsair rep (Mike something I think) on here, he should be able to help you.
