Looking for a new Rig

You gotta keep your eyes peeled on deal sites, man. You just missed the P180B for $40 after a $40MIR w/ shipping starting at $13 from Frys.com.

I'll leave the GPU cooler suggestions to others.

I own 5 Corsair PSUs, and none of them were bought from the egg, simply due to their price premium on Corsair power supplies. I've mainly used provantage.com, buy.com, zipzoomfly.com and clubit.com for my Corsair PSUs.

I know GPU cooler is something new which people don't use quite often. I was just asking if its really worth to spend extra bucks on GPU cooler??

It depends on the user actually. Do you want lower temperatures even though some of these cards are rated for 100C and above? Do you want something significantly quieter than the stock GPU HSF?

I just want stability and long life for my GPU

Theoretically, the lower the temperature on the card, the longer lasting and more stable the card will be. Realistically, it doesn't matter if you get a 3rd party HSF or not. Many video cards these days can handle ridiculously high temperatures. If you have a good amount of airflow and regularly clean out the dust in your case and fans, the video card should last a while.

Ditch the 8800 series for a 9800 or Ati 4850/4870. Same price range and better performance.

ATI is the designer of the GPU, and they license other companies to use that GPU in their video cards. ATI also sells their own version of the GPU on a video card, and these are typically denoted with "built by ATI" on the box.

OK so the place where I am staying, ASUS cards are not available most of the HD4850s available are from ATI and MSI. So what is your recommendation for these 2 manufacturers in terms of performance??

Performance will be roughly the same throughout all manufacturers unless the card is overclocked from the factory. I'd go for built by ATI over MSI, but thats because I've had several MSI vidcards die on me. :p

Thanks a lot for providing the information. Just one last question. Is there any difference between HD4850 and HD4850 X 2? Does HD4850 X 2 means 2 graphic cards??

Close. The X2 means that the video card has two HD4850 GPUs on one PCB or board. So basically two video cards in one package. No reason for you to get one especially since it's not even out yet.

Finally got my rig. This is the configuration.

CPU : E8400
Mobo : ASUS P5Q Pro
RAM : DDR-2 G-Skill - 800 2 X 2 GB
GPU : Palit Readeon HD4850
HDD : WD 6400AAKS
PSU : Corsair 650TX
Case : CM 690
Monitor : DELL SP2208WFP

Although I have yet to purchase Heat Sink. Which is going to be ThermalRight Extreme 120.

Right I will not take any chance by increasing the voltage. But there are some wiered things which I've obesrved.

1) When I boot the PC, initially it shows the Mobo infomration then for fraction of seconds it displays an error saying "No bootable device" but then it loads the windows. It is for faction of seconds thats why I am unable to take a photoshoot of it.

2) When i used CPZ in speed it showed around 2000Mhz. But in actual E8400 is 3Ghz. Does it means that my CPU is underclocked or C2Ds have this property to automatically reduce the clock speed when they are Idle?

Rest of the everything is fine. When I ran speed fan to see the temprature the CPU temp usually is around 46 Degree at Idle and both cores show around 44 Degree. Sometimes when I run applications like Spybot the CPU Temp reaches 50 Degree and the Cores reach 46-47 Degrees. Right now without a good HSF if I run games like "NFS most wanted" will it fry the CPU??

1) Since windows is being loaded, no worries

2) Yes Intel CPUs do downclock themselves to conserve power and lower heat when idle or low CPU usage. That feature is called SpeedStep. When you actually do something CPU intensive, then the CPU will clock right back up.

Sorry the delay. What is the procedure for uploadng the pics? I don' see an browse opion. When I click on this image icon it asks fo the URL

Just upload the pictures to imageshack.us and post the links from there.

Here it is.

No hardware pics?!?

/me makes sure he's in genhard... not gensoft... :p

You can consider it a bug of Windows VISTA. I had taken a couple of pics using my Nokia N95 but when i transferred it into PC using Nokia PC Suit. They were erased. I don't know why. I cut those pics and pasted it into document folder.

Although I've never experienced this kind of behaivour in Windows XP. This is the first time I am using Windows VISTA Ultimatum.

VISTA is such a hungary OS in terms of space and consuming memory. I partioned my 640 GB HDD in such a way that I gave 56GB for OS and rest I partioned 200GB, 200GB, 140 GB.

Despite allocating 56GB of space for OS only 20GB is free. I didn't install any additional software except Office 2007.

Previously in XP I used to allocate 3 times more address space of RAM for Virtual memory. One of my friend advised me that, this always enchance the perfomance of your system.

Is it help in VISTA too? I am having 4GB RAM therefore addressed 12GB for Virtual Memory.

Not really. While Vista is a resource hog, it makes much more efficient use of those resources and learns your tendencies... so it will be slow for the first few weeks.

After that? It will be faster than before? I was under the impression that when an OS is installed freshly its always faster and later on keep on getting slower. What makes VISTA so unique?

So should I change the virtual memory settings to normal as it was before?

Thanks in Advance

Well if it learns your tendencies, you expect it to be slower?

I was just kidding.

I do expect it to learn my tendencies and become faster in later course of time.

But after hearing numerous horror stories buggy VISTA, it has created a terrible image in my eyes

Ignore the horror stories you hear about vista. Although I don't have much experience with it myself, the only people that have told me bad things about vista are mac users.

The only real problem I could see anybody having with vista is finding drivers for old peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.). That's technically not the OS's fault though, vendors should have new drivers for their products.

Sorry for this delay. Please feel free to post your suggestion. Does the setup looks OK??

I am not satisfied with the tempratures. One more problem I am facing is, since I replaced stock cooling with TRUE. Its not loading express gateway. Even after reinstalling it. I want to overclock it while keeping the tempreature not more than 55 degrees. I've never tested overclocking. Can someone tell me the procedure for this?? Thanks in Advance

Finally this is the test I performed. It never overclocked beyond 3GHz and still the temprature touched 57 degrees despite having world class HeatSink TRUE :(
