So here is the deal, I use headphone for about 10-16 hours a day and after about 12 years my Sony MDR-7506 's are pretty much totally worn out and I'm looking for a replacment.

I use them to monitor recordings and watch video.

I bought a pair of Corsair Vengeance 1500's that I use when gaming and I like them just fine for use on the computer , BUT now I have a need for regular headphones again for non computer sources .

I'm considering getting a AVR in the future once DTS Headphone:X starts to come out and using one as a USB DAC if I find a nice option so a new pair of headphones would probably replace the Vengeance 1500's in the future too.

In the mean time I really need a replacement set and I figured I'd ask in here if anyone had recommendations.

I want closed back Circum-aural headphones or possibly some IEM's.

Mainly I need decent isolation and they should be easy to drive from CE devices without a separate amp.

I started looking at IEM's but I haven't seen many models talked about as being ok for monitoring and I didn't want to just jump straight back to the MDR-7506's since although they are pretty comfortable they aren't really Circum-aural but are more like Supra-aural and they don't really isolate real well. I looked at the Heil ProSet 3 's as a full size option but I haven't seen many reviews to just buy them sight unseen.

Long story short , I got $100-$130 to spend, gotta used them all day long and want a mostly flat response. What should I get?

You could stay with Sony and go with the MDR-V6, or go with the Sennheiser HD439 at your price point. Both are pretty comfortable, circumaural, closed, easy to drive, and fairly flat. The Sennheiser are more polite in the treble imo and sound better, but both can be had right around $100 or less. Good luck with your hunt.
 
the V6 is a classic headphone but not a very "modern" sound. a ton of stuios have them however. the MDR-7520 is out of your budget but a great sony studio headphone.

I have a set of the MDR-ZX700. the cord is a too short for studio use but they have a very balanced sound. Not very extended bass though. They rated pretty well on Inner Fidelity review also.
 
If you are using them to monitor recordings...get another pair 7506s...or replace the worn out parts (or even replace the earcups with something more enclosed)?

There's a reason why nearly every studio has some, because nearly every proper studio has some and the same audio setup can be replicated anywhere. All recordings are expected to sound good on a pair of those, so the best option for monitoring even if it's to check stuff over, is a pair of those (or some V6s because they are pretty much identical just cheaper). :D

lol slightly out of the price range at about $370, every single closed back full sized set on Tyll's current wall of fame costs less :)

I'm thinking of something more musical would be nice for a change.

unfortunately the mdr-5706 /V6 are listed as circum-aural but on my head they just kinda sit on the front of my ears and sorta cover the back, unlike the Vengeance 1500 that completely surround my ears.

I saw that the Shure se215 had detachable cables and IEM's should isolate pretty good , I had a pair of shure sc2' s a while back I liked but I wore out the cables were they bend to got ove the ear. The se215 's don't look to have that issue and if they did fail it wouldn't be hard to fix if the cables detach I'm just thinking that at $100 there is probably a better set out there possibly.

I'd rather just use some near-field monitors or just do a 5.1 setup but I cannot have speakers going all night when I'm working unless I want to piss off everyone in the house :p

Are your 7506's really worn out or is it just the pads? If you haven't already, I'd recommend using DT250 Velour pads on them instead.

naw if it was just pads i'd be happy to just replace then.

they are actually cracking were the headband meets the swivels, I've actually used some electrical tape to keep it together for the last 2 years.

Truthfully I should have replaced them a long time ago but playing with my vengeance 1500s distracted me :p

I'm thinking if a receiver with DTS Headphone:X is really all it's cracked up to be, I'd probably be happy to spend a good amount on headphones and a receiver it is just atm If I spend over $150 on headphones I'd need a nice DAC/amp for computer sound since I wouldn't bother with onboard.
 
I am a Home Theater Geeks listener on TWiT.tv and they had amazing thigns to say about the DTS headhpone:x demo at CES. I was at the show and am sorry I missed it.

Yeah I'm a avid fan and IRC member for a lot of the TWIT shows, home theater geeks especially , Scott uses the Heil ProSet3 's and he said he loves them when I ask how they are working for him.

He mentioned that granted he isn't doing critical listening on them, but instead using them mainly for monitoring but that is what I'd want a pair for too so it peaked my interest.

He started to tell me about the PSB M4U 2 and M4U 1 and the B&W P5 when I asked him in the post-show and has had Tyll on a few times so combined I trust any input he had as pretty well informed.

I really liked the episode were Scott had Tyll and Steve Guttenberg come on to debate subjective listen as compared to pure measurements for reviewing and rating headphones.

Scott had seemed to be really impressed by DTS Headphone:X at the demo and I trust it should be as good Dolby headphone or better.

He brought up the question of why putting it on a receiver made sense because receivers typically don't have good headphone sections but I'm hopeful that when is starts to come out , there will be a nice model that also could work as a USB DAC otherwise I'm going to have completely separate setups for analogue and non-computer sources and my gaming PC with the Vengeance 1500's directly next to each other.

I'd rather have a dual-use setup the more I think about it but I have to either find a cheaper pair of closed back can now or keep waiting for a receiver or something and spend a bunch and it looks like option 2 might win out If I can be patient.

can't you just replace the pads???
