Looking for a good turn based strategy game

What scale? Squad-based or bigger?

For good squad-based strategy I'd recommend Silent Storm and Silent Storm: Sentinels. Maybe Hammer and Sickle too.

Master of Magic. Old but you can't go wrong.

Oh, forgot. Jagged Alliance 2 was very good too. And the X-Coms of course. (one and two, i never got into xcom 3)

Silent storm was an awesome turn based tactical squad game. Also, fallout:tactics was quite good.

I also liked Galactic Civilization II. There just aren't many turn based games made anymore, at least not mainstream ones.

I also like the Total War series. A nice mix of turn based strategy and tactical RTS.

My all time favorites were Steel Panthers, Master of Orion (avoid the 3rd one), Master of Magic, and X-com.

This one looks pretty good. Any more opinions on this one?

Can't you get it for under $10? I got it + an expansion for $5. It seemed very deep and complex, which is why I only played it for 30 minutes. The learning curve is steep. Their in game tutorial and message board didn't help me understand the mechanics either.

Yeah, GalCiv II is pretty complexed, but it is a great game once you get over the learning curve and the deep technology tree. The AI is really good, first strategy game that beat me on Normal setting.

Damn I can't believe this thread got this far without any of us mentioning Civilization...

I didn't mention Civ IV 'cause I never played it.

I stopped at CIV III 'cause the maximum number of cities allowed in the game was 512, and my games kept crashing. Probably due to the fact that I had over 5,000 military units.

I didn't care for Galciv, probably because the map was flat two dimensional. Why make a space strategy games if the map is gonna be 2d? Might as well make it naval or something.

+1 for the following already mentioned, Silent Storm series (Hammer & Sickle was ridiculously difficult though), Kings Bounty: The Legend, Jagged Alliance 2, Fallout Tactics, X-com series.

...and Heroes of Might & Magic V + Expansions, Space Rangers 2: Reboot.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

All the games mentioned are "A" games:

Galactic Civilizations 2
Total War Series,
etc...

but everyone forgot to mention one of the greatest strategy games made:

Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic

edit: I forgot add it is turn-based too.

There's also the Combat Mission series.

WW2:
Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord
Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Combat MIssion: Afrika Korps

Modern Day:
Combat Mission: Shock Force + Marines Module

I ending up picking up a copy of Kings Bounty : The Legend. After pissing $39.95 away on Sins of the Empire, I am hoping this game is better. I just do not understand why there are not more turn based strategy games now a days. Everything is RTS or FPS.....

It sucks because there are a couple genres that are dying in similar ways and all thats left are developers that take themselves too damn seriously and forget how to make fun games.

You should like kings bounty it was one of the biggest surprises this year.

IMO its games like sins that keep pushing people away from turn based strategy. It sucks because there are a couple genres that are dying in similar ways and all thats left are developers that take themselves too damn seriously and forget how to make fun games.

I thought Sins of a Solar Empire was an RTS.

The Far Wilds is a turn based strategy game with sort of a collectible card game slant.

I played the demo for a few rounds and decided it was worth coming back to, just don t have the time to devote to it at the moment.

I just picked up Valkyria Chronicles for PS3, it's a new twist on turn-based strategy games with some RPG, and FPS thrown in. Very unique and if you can stand all the anime style and story lines I really recommend it.

Hell if you're bringing consoles into mix:

Disgaea 1, 2, and 3.
Throw Makai Kingdom up in there too.

Tis true. The world really does need more turn based strategy games. Heck, i still play the original MOO, as that is about as good as it gets IMHO.

I should bust out and open source version one of these days. It's not like i haven't made turn based strategy games in the past (back during my highschool/college days). With memory and processors speeds of today, there is no reason not to have a grand, galactic scale turn based game like MOO, just with deeper tech trees, and more options.

Do yourself a favor and get Alpha Centauri. After you've played it for some time, get the expansion, Alien Crossfire.

Robosport....by Maxis.

Circa 1991ish...my memory is fuzzy...the graphics probally are too ;)

If you like the Master of Orion games (1 and 2...3 was crap), then you might want to try Space Empires V.

Far more customization possible along with a much larger tech tree to research as well as various "racial" technologies such as Temporal Physics, or Crystalline Tech.

The original Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1 is pretty awesome.

Civ 4 is great too, and if you have a 360 civ revolution is fun.

editing my old post... I have purchased team fortress II and left4dead but I can t stop playing the far wilds.

I think I love to hate it. <3 indy games

Great genre, have plenty of good recommendations already.

+1 on GalCiv II. The game LOOKS complex, but the learning curve wasn't as steep as I had thought. Take a moment to go through the tutorials, play the first few campaign maps to get to it, then do a custom campaign. Very fun game.

Rome\Medieval 2 Total War are great games. Medieval 2 would probably appeal more, just because the visuals are updated and some of the army building and faction management has been streamlined, but otherwise a very fun game. Tons of replay value, likely keep you occupied for months or an entire year on a single campaign. Personally feel Rome: Total War was the better of the two, but I like the whole Roman times/era/epoch.
