I am looking for a 8 hotswap bay case ( a quiet tower style case, please no very loud server rackmount 2U) that is not tooo expansive for my All-in-one ESXi and ZFS Datastore. I need to fit a regular ATX motherboard in there with a socket 2011 cpu.

As a second questions, some case have disk failure led, is there anyway that a ZFS storage could lite those in case of failure even if it's a software raid?

SGPIO backplanes are what you want with a controller that supports them.
 
The supermicro case is an excellent choice. We have two of them and they are reliable and built like a tank, but quiet they are not!

This model is a 665W (Super Quiet) according to their website :) Hopefully it's true!

Which controller should I get for 8 SATA drives (JBOD) that will be used for a ZFS datastore (and that hopefully support SGPIO or whatever is need for the drive failure led to work)?

Yeah, the power supply is relatively quiet. You forgot this though: 4x 5,000 RPM Hot-swap PWM Cooling Fans - They sound like a jet engine! These boxes are in a server room so it isn't a problem, but I wouldn't want to have that near me.
 
Yup, totally agree,

A lot depends on what kind of hardware you have installed in the box. If you just have consumer level hardware in there it might be ok, but if you start putting server-level equipment (multiple CPUs) you will find you need the faster, louder fans to properly cool the box.
 
If you need 120mm fans and want to choose your PSU, chenbro has one. Both hotswap cages (for 4x 3.5"hdd or 6x 2.5"hdd) are extra but all together the price is similar to the Supermicro option.
 
Does the SC743T support standard ATX boards? Or maybe even mATX? It isn't very clear from the website and I don't want to splash the cash on this otherwise. The built quality on these cases looks great, but I've read it's also difficult to fit standard ATX power supplies to them and that they don't take kindly to non-SP hardware.

Ideally i'd want to keep the server as quiet as possible, using a fanless seasonic ps
 
I'll be using the Zalman CNPS9500 for the CPU, but with there's a few on this forum saying the Supermicro case fans sound like they're 'taking off', so it'd be for them.

Have you any idea whether the chassis accepts smaller motherboards? I'm hoping I can buy the chassis and get an Areca raid card for my existing PC you see. I want this for my office, so the sound levels need to be acceptable!

You can make the chassis fans quieter, by plugging into motherboard and using the thermal fan controller, some boards are decent some arn't.

To be exact, i'm working on a PWM controller board right now for projects like this. It will have MANY MANY options.. :)

the case you linked to looks great - the supermicro is appealing though as it can be rackmounted if I ever choose to massively expand my hardware
