Hi,
I just got my fancy new msi neo 4 platinum sli with the creative 7.1 chip on it. When i plug in my 680s using a digital coax cable, I can't get all 6 speakers to work. Only the front 2 do. I tried changing the settings in the creative control panel to use digital only etc... i've also tried the different settings on the logitechs and still can't seem to get 'em to work.

If i hook up the speakers to the analog cables (front, sub and rear) then it works fine. Do these cables break easily?
I had a similar problem with my last board, I could only get the front and rear speakers to work but not the center or sub. I thought it was the shitty audio on the board but now I think it was something else...

With a stereo source like MP3s?
What happens when you try to play something that is already encoded in multichannel format like say a DVD?
 
Ok, I'm not sure how the sound settings look in your mobo, but since it's a Creative chip I'm gonna assume it has some of the things my Audigy 2 ZS has. Go to Creative HQ > click on Device Controls > then Decoder > and make sure you select SPDIF Passthrough!
If the settings in your mobo are different, just make sure that the decoder setting (wherever it is) is set to SPDIF Passthrough!!
This will enable the digital signal to come out clean and undecoded, so your speaker's decoder can do all the decoding and send each sound to the proper speaker. If your mobo decodes the digital signal before it gets to the speakers, then all your gonna get is 2 channel sound.
Then go and go all the other things (select digital output only and set the Input of your speakers to Coax).

well i tried that and it didn't seem to help either... i really have no idea what is going on :confused: :confused:

maybe i'll try a new cable...

For the same reason there is no problem with what you are experiencing. ;)

Your onboard audio does not have the ability to encode a Dolby digital stream on the fly, so you only get two channels of PCM audio data when you play something that is not already encoded into a multichannel digital audio format (Dolby pass through).
You can either switch back to using the analog cables or use something like prologic mode to get matrixed surround sound. :)

Your question has been asked and explained many, many times. And yes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your equipment, it is working exactly as it is designed. Please read through the FAQ at the top of the forum, referencing anything that sounds familier.

Directly answering your question to the point that you could understand fully would simply be a needless duplication of the FAQ.
 
You'll need to change the settings in your pc. You're pc thinks you have a 2 speaker setup. Change it by going to Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, click on the Hardware tab, click on Advanced and select the correct speaker setup.

edit:: didn't mean to bring back an old thread, i used the search option and happened to want to answer the dudes problem.
