List of great but not mainstream games?

lol I thought Shogo was awesome when I played it. I was like 14 and I had a friend over for the weekend. We beat it in like 2 days then started playing Half-Life 1 :D

Seems most people are just listing old mainstream classics.

My choice would be Galactic Civilizations 2, independently published by Stardock.

  • Psychonauts
  • Defcon
  • Uplink, X3 (not so old - but really, really good - most of the issues that gave the game 75% ish scores have now been fixed, and some new content added - also the modding community/quality is simply awesome - check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJuqJnGTc8o),
  • Summoner (really great plot)
  • Settlers 3 (and the expansion pack - makes a GREAT multiplayer game with friends who like slower paced games)
  • Homeworld 1 and Cataclysm - again old, most likely both are on a top 10 list somewhere - but these are two of the best games in the RTS genre and both have really awesome stories. Homeworld 2 has a less good single player experience imo, but the multiplayer is better.
  • Starlancer - one of the best (although not as good as Freespace 2) space combat games, seems too be overlooked by many in favour of Freespace/Wing Commander/Tie Fighter - it seems the first 5-10 missions are all escort duty, but then you end up doing some really cool stuff like raiding asteroid depots for fuel cells, and destroying a huge capital ship in dock in Saturn orbit (did I mention this game looks pretty damn good too) - unlike freespace, you can quite happily play this with a mouse and keyboard as well. Theres a demo out there somewhere that has some single player content not featured in the full game.
  • Tachyon the Fringe - Kinda like Freelancer, except older. Pretty fun, had good multiplayer back in the day.
  • Sid Meirs Alpha Centurai is universally well reviewed - but sufficently old that I imagine not alot of people will have played it - simply put its the best Turn Based game I've ever played (the turn based aspect totally eclipses the Total War games for example)
  • Old Dos games - Commander Keen (except the crappy vegetable episode), Duke Nukem 1 through 3d, Monster Bash (nothing beats firing rockets from a slingshot, or killing zombies too have their heads fall off and roll around, and hands fall of and try and claw you), Raptor, Terminal Velocity, Wolfenstein 3d and Blake Stone, Bio Menace, Stargunner, Hocus Pocus.

Oh, cool, I actually have the Shogo CD somewhere but I had never gotten around to trying it. I must have come free with something. I didn't know it was any good.

One of my favorite old games was Elite, a space pirate/trading kind of game.

I tried to run an emulator and play some of the old Apple II games I liked: Drol, Hard Hat Mack, Montezuma's Revenge, and one Indiana Jones game which I don't remember the name of right now... I played all of the old RPG Apple II games: Ultima I - IV, the Wizardy series, The Bard's Tale series, Phantasie I & II, Shard of Spring, and many others...

Wizardry 8 was kind of a cool game. Not very good graphics, even when it came out, but still an RPG for the hardcore.

Shogo is is great! The anime-inspired fps is very fun, if you dont care about really ugly looking NPCs. (i dont). At one point you drive mechs, a big plus.

Single player was OK, but that game really shined with multiplayer. Many LOL moments.

BTW, you can still play ROTT online, over the internet, in fact, I began playing it multiplayer just recently.

it's called uniracers :p one of my favorite games, too bad i traded it in along with secret of mana/evermore, final fantasy mystic quest, starfox, and a load of other classics back in the day.

I actually still own it. :D

Uniracers = awesome.

Some more:

Mischief Makers (N64)

Roboblitz - first PC game to use Unreal Engine 3. Pretty short (a few hours?), but fun as hell and only $15 on Steam.

Ikaruga (Dreamcast/Gamecube) - insane top-down shooter

If you actually have a Sega Dreamcast - try Powerstone and Powerstone 2. Easily the two best fighting games of all time. It's not even fair to call them fighting games to me because personally I don't like the genre, but Power Stone is easily one of the greatest games of all time.

Snes - Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Mystic Quest --- three best RPGs of all time, in order :)

Snes - R-Type the original, so sweet!

Oh my how could i forget!!!

Genesis - Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu(if anyone has a copy of this i'll send you a nut via paypal), Kid Chameleon(if you beat this game you deserve a medal).

Fantasy Wars. Defnately not mainstream but brand new and a great strategy game.

Ya, I also see a lot of older mainstream titles. There's a world of current indie gaming out there.

Two titles that spring to mind:
Dwarf Fortress
Mount and Blade
