What exactly does “unlocked clock multiplier” mean? Is it related to OC?
And why it’s available in the Extreme models only?
I noticed in the Core 2 Extreme "Yorkfield XE" the Mult is 8x, but other models (that should have a locked clock multiplier) have 8.5/9.5 Mult

I think it’s obvious from the list that the choice would be between Q9450 and Q9550 :D

yes, on the Extream models you can raise the mulitplier UP. On the others the default is the mulitplier you listed and that is the highest multiplier that can be set. They can be adjusted down, but NOT up.

A higher multiplier lets you run the cpu faster with a lower FSB. Typically this makes it easier to overclock the cpu.

So when you shell out > $1000 for an Extream you dont feel quite as sick to your stomach when you hear your wallet scream. It is really their only major difference over the slower chips (along with some warm fuzzy that Intel has tested them at high speed). There has to be some distinction, for instance I have my E6300 OCed beyond the stock clock speed of the Extream that was in the same family, Better performance for $800 less. (This is comparing OC to stock so is not quite fair but my wallet did not care).

"Penryn" is the codename for Intel's 45nm process and covers all of the 45nm CPU's.
 
this is only a list of "future" intel processors, and that one is available now (although in a way it's not available because of the "extreme" price)

I'm guessing because Penryn was developed first, and Wolfdale/Yorkfield is based off of that development.

Well, it depends on how the manufacture puts out a CPU series...

Say rumor got out that a new flagship Intel chip came out, and of course it would have a main stream counterpart. Well, if someone discovered that the only difference between the two chips was intel underclocking the mainstream chip, then, sure, the lower FSB would be easier to overclock.

But, that'll never happen.

They whole core based 45nm linup is called penryn because, well, because thats what the 45nm line was first talked about under. Same as the core based 65nm linup was discussed under the merom name. Thats what was talked about first. Same as the Nehalem/45nm lineup is being talked about as Nehalem, but we know the desktop (bloomfield) server, mobile names (which escape me at the moment).

Unlocked clock multi means you can adjust the multiplyer. The clock is equal to FSB * multi, and the only difference between parts of the same linup are the multis being used for each bin. Unlocked multis allow the user much more freedom in overclocking. So instead of using 500*8 to reach 4.0Ghz you can do something more reasonable like 400*10 to reach the same result.

DemonDiablo penryn is the mobile part codename. The server line has 2 names, one for 1 way and another 2+ way, IIRC. I dont remember either of them off the top of my head.

Eradan- I dont see the Q9650 on there either. Should be a 3.0Ghz (3.16?) part IIRC.

/me can hardly wait for bloomfield.

E8190 will not support virtualization or contain Intel's Trust Execution Technology.

With 1600FSB on next gen CPU it will be even more difficult to do good speeds on cheap CPU:s, meaning hit where extremes can walk to.

That is until we get boards that are hitting 600-800MHz FSB's easily.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "Extreme is worth the money." A regular CPU + good aircooling will be 30-50% of the price and get you 90-95% of the performance.
 
IMO, spending $1500 on just a CPU is nuts. The way the technology moves you won't be able to even take advantage of it's power until something better and cheaper comes out. If you're filthy rich go for it, I would, but other than that you're not investing your money wisely.
 
Intel seems to be already showing signs of market monopoly.

The quad cores Yorkfields listed have a lower multi with higher FSB of 1333 ...relating to lower OC's on these 45nm chips. Its well established fact that most of these new chips can do close to 4GHz and above on air cooling.

Most well built mobos can handle 450 FSB for daily use .. with 480-490 seemingly the limit on most. Anything higher requires more voltage w/ more heat o/p, and is not a smart move.

Take the 'value' quads for instance..
Q9300 --> 450 x 7.5 = 3375
Q9450 --> 450 x 8.0 = 3600

While these are good OC's they are nowhere close to the best that these chips can do. Seems like a subtle way of telling you to upgrade that spanking new mobo...

As I recall the Merom name was used for a very long time. Then we heard about the Conroe name and people started switching to using that for about 3-6 months before release. Maybe its just because I was focusing on the mobile sector.

Kind've like how we've heard nehalem for a long time, but now people are starting to use the proper names, bloomfield, lynnfield, clarksfield, auburndale, (-field being the quads, -dale being the duals,) etc.

$50 is a serious number and does make a difference is choosing a CPU
but in the Q9300/Q9450 case this price difference shouldn’t make a problem cuz Q9450 is too sexy to waste for $50

Wow, I didn't even notice the date. It popped up in "New Posts" so I read it and responded.

I don't seem to remember hearing about Merom until March or April of 2006, while Conroe I'd heard of in late 2004, albeit still under the Netburst roadmap.
