Linux VM folding kills GPU folding?

I just set up the notfred Linux VM folding application to run on both cores of the CPU, set the priority to 'idle' by editing the VMX file and let it run for a while. It was then that I noticed dropping temperatures on the GPU core and that it basically stopped folding.

Does running the Linux SMP client on all cores make it impossible to run the GPU client simultaneously? As the GPU output is more important to me I went back to running the Windows single-core client for now, but I would like to know what in the world just happened.
 
You'll have to use WinAFC to run them both

Funny, I don't run affinity and have no issue.

I did set "slightly higher" in the GPU client.
 
Yeah, the 'slightly higher' option in the GPU client is required to make it work. The VM clients otherwise leave no spare CPU cycle for it from the looks of it :)

Set the affinity of the GPU client to High. "Slightly Higher" or "Below Normal" isn't really good enough, because they will still get stifled by whatever other programs are running normally on the PC. But if you set the VMs to the lowest possible priority, then set the GPU to High, then there should be no problems.
 
Ok, "have" to may be the wrong wording, but it's suggested. I had one rig act like that so I always use it now

Yeah, +1 to WinAFC. It's really convenient since it will assign priorities and affinities automatically, so it takes a lot of hassle out of it, and it means that when your VMs start they don't cause massive slowdowns until you can manually change in the Task Manager because they're hogging all the CPU cycles.

And Windows, by the look of OP. Though I don't know if it's XP, Vista, or 7.
 
Windows XP. I did look at WinAFC, but possibly I'm too stupid to figure out how to use it. Setting priorities manually seem to work anyway.
 
Can't we set affinities via the task manager? Or does VM require a little extra (sorry, a bit far away from my VM borgs :p).

I've found that setting the priority to 'idle' by editing the VMX file does not work.
When you start the VM it reverts back to normal.
I also use WinAFC to set my VM's to "idle" and my GPU's to "normal" on each of my boxen.
I used to manualy set the set the VM's to only use 3 cores of my Q6600's and the GPU's to use the remaining one, but that dropped me ~500 PpDperVM.

You mean me? That's not hard, I only have the computer on half the time.

I have it on 24/7, though I think I (to put it very nicely, fucked up) my stats.... I haven't got an 'update' for a week now !?

I've heard of that happening with a few peoples' machines, but it's not always the case. I have my VMs set to Idle priority through the .vmx files and they always start up and run at that priority without reverting to normal.
 
My system worked ok without doing anything to affinities or priorities before the new VM player that supports 4 cores. I was just using 1 VM on my triple-core and letting the GPUs use the 3rd core. 3 ATI cards with the CPU-usage optimized was still using most of a core. Now my VM is using 3 cores and the CPU is maxed. I need to get WinAFC running again to make sure the GPUs aren't starving.
