LGA775 vs. Socket 478

So what are the pro's and con's of these processor sockets? I am looking into building a few new systems for work, and am between two barebones systems one with the 775, the other with the 478. Im looking at the 3 ghz HT P4, the socket 478 processor is like almost $90 more than the LGA 775 one, why?

Don't bother with 478 unless you can get a dynamite deal like I did on TigerDirect for my file server (Celeron 3.06ghz, Intel 875 miniATX mobo, 512mb DDR = $100 Canadian). The current Intel socket is 775, and there is a lot more choice (in terms of CPUs and memory) on that.
 
Yeah IMHO if you want a "work" system to last a long time build it using 2.8ghz Pentium D.

hahah, i would love to, but its all about the upfront money, they would rather upgrade every 3-4 years than pay up front for a system that would last then 4+ years.
 
S478 is dead, I think they even stopped making Celeron D's for them. As said before, they're more expensive because they are no longer in production, try to find a price for a Pentium 3-S 1.4, thats another good example of rare hardware prices.

Your best bet:
Build the system with one of Asus' new premium boards (i955 or i975 chipsets),
throw in a Pentium D 930 (3.0ghz dual core, new presler 65nm part, 4mb cache),
1gb of DDR2-667 with CAS4 timings,
and if they are gamers throw in the appropriate PCIex monster... if not, throw in a Radeon All-In-Wonder 2006 (x1300 with all kinds of TV/capture features), and you've got a system that will satisfy them for 3-4 years, for pretty cheap.

we are looking at systems that are about less than half that price, a nice Asus Vintage PE-1 Barebones sytem, 512mb of ram, 3.06ghz P4 HT, with the integrated graphics....

Its an office machine, why so much power for an office machine?
 
Performance wise the 2 systems will probably be identical.

Longevity wise the 775 system will be more upgradeable, b/c it will have newer standards, like PCIe slots, DDR2 (possibly), etc...

chips for s478 maxed out at 3.4Ghz
chips for LGA775 max out at 3.8Ghz

Plus you MIGHT be able to put a newer Cedar Mill chip in the 775 for some serious overclocking or just cooler running at stock.

If you're building a new system, go for LGA 775

alright, thank you very much for that! i just didnt understand why there were two and one was so much more expensive. Ill go for the LGA775.

HAHA! In all honesty, there isn't really a reason as of yet. Anything on the 775 platform could have been done with 478.

Dunno about dual-core support or 64bit OS'es, maybe a new chipset refresh could of supported it, I know that S478 can support PCI-E though, since i have a PCI-E/478 board.
