Hi guys and gals,

I am looking for a new PSU. Besides upgrading my CPU and putting in a bigger heat sink I am also thinking about putting in my old GTX 280 as a dedicated physics card and maybe running a third monitor at some distant point.

I seem to recall something about needing to plug a monitor into your second card for the Nvidia driver to even use it, is that still the case? Should I put my second monitor on the GTX 280 anyways to keep the GTX 580 on task with no interruptions?

To point, I know my current PS cant handle both cards.

My upgraded power supply should ideal be at least 700 watts strong. For the right price I might be able to go a bit higher.

The PSU should also have the connectors for fully supporting two Vid cards, I assume SLI compatible should do that as a feature on the box to check off.

I also have found I prefer modular units, they are just easy to deal with and I can pull out (or never plug in) connectors I dont need.

Lastly I am hoping to do this under $100, if that cant be done for as little over as possible.

Any sugestions?

I've found these though www.pricewatch.com

http://www.amazon.com/Coolmax-CUG-7...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B000G702RI

http://www.+++++++/thermaltake/pe/TTK_TR700P/

This one seems best for features and has two 6 pin and two 6+2 pin pci connectors. I am assuming 6+2 works for 8 pin sockets. How is thermaltake as a brand?

$100 for a modular PSU to power a GTX 580 and a GTX 280? Dude that's not enough. That might be enough for just the GTX 580 however:
$99 - XFX P1-650X-CAH9 650W Modular PSU

However with that GTX 280 added, then I recommend this PSU:
$170 - Corsair 850HX 850W Modular PSU

That Coolmax PSU is a piece of a shit. As for Thermaltake, if it's not part of their Toughpower line, avoid it since it's likely a piece of shit. And your link doesn't work.

The Coolmax unit you found is not good. I can't comment on the second link since the domain has been filtered out by the forum.

The XFX PSU Danny suggested would in fact be enough for both your GTX 580 and GTX 280, especially since the 280 won't use too much power when dedicated to physics calculations. I think that would be the ideal choice considering your budget.
