Alrighty, let's put a poll up here. I'm wondering how many people plan to hop onto the Core i7 platform (Nehalem), and when. I think I've covered most of the major paths in the poll choices.

i7 920 + X58 at launch
i7 940 + X58 at launch
i7 965 EE + X58 at launch
i7 920 + X58 within 4 months
i7 940 + X58 within 4 months
i7 965 EE + X58 within 4 months
i7 + P55 when available
Within 12 months
No, AMD
Waiting to compare with AMD

I'm probably going to be waiting over a year. All my system could use is a Graphics card upgrade and it will be good to go for at least another year or two.

I wish we could put in more than 10 choices, not really enough to cover all the bases. I probably should have consolidated the "at launch" options and added in 3 for "waiting for 32nm", "waiting for Havendale", and "waiting for Lynnfield". Still wouldn't have enough for "waiting for dual-socket" or the ever-so-simple "waiting for reviews". ;)

You forgot "waiting for ever"

It totally depends on how expensive they are, how far the OC, and whether they will force me to buy DDR3.

I did 940 at 4 months. But, again a lot of that depends on price/performance/OC ability. Though I do want to upgrade around Jan/Feb.

Umm, P55 (Ibex peak) is JUST a southbridge, the entire northbridge is in the CPU. And it uses a DMI connection instead of a QPI connection to the CPU. It will NOT work with bloomfield CPUs...

Right, it's the budget platform. Lynnfield for quads, Havendale for duals. I don't think anyone here said it'd work with Bloomfield.

true, but we dont know that i7 will be the brand name for lynnfield/havendale :)

Just found out that my Q9450 will do 3.8 GHz for daily use, so no upgrading for my in the coming 12 months.

I doubt I'll be upgrading in anything less than a year and a half or so. My Q9550 is pretty damn fast at 3.8GHz, and I seriously doubt that anything within the next 18 months is going to be stressful enough to actually need more power than my current PC can provide.

I will be getting I7 and 965 EE within 4 months. I want to see how much Triple Channel memory will cost. Curious what max memory will be on the Giga-byte X58 1366 Extreme MB.

definitely not getting nehalem any time soon.

just got a Q6600 overclocked to 3.6. whenever I get a new CPU/motherboard (which isn't often) I upgrade the graphics card to play games and shit, until the CPU gets too outdated, or they get rid of a bus (AGP) lol

2 years for me. I just upgraded from 2006 with an Opty 170, Asus A8N SLI, 2GB DDR and 7900GTX. I'm a late adopter, saves me more money :)

Depends on how much you want.
Corsaid has said MSRP on their 3x2GB DDR3-1333/cl9 stick will run $230. Will that be the cheapest? No. But it'll run very nicely. $300 gets you 3 2GB sticks of DDR3-1600/cl8, which will be enough to last a long time. DDR3-1600 for bandwidth, and the absolute latency should be lower than DDR3-1333cl7 (slightly). Im not watching the 3GB sticks, and corsair is the only one to have announced MSRP already.

Newegg has mushkin 2GB DDR3-1333/cl9 sticks for $90 a pop. Bump the voltage to 1.65v and it should run CL7 just fine (but the corsair above will be cheaper for 3 sticks of it).

Just a matter of picking how much you want at this point, and admitting that DDR3 is a hell of a lot more expensive than DDR2.

And dont forget that the IMC will run fine with 2 sticks as well, if you dont need/want 6GB. Two sticks of DDR3-1333/cl9 will run you $130, with about 80% of the bandwidth as the triple DDR3-1066 the IMC is officially supporting, even for 1.5v memory.

I don't see myself replacing my Q6600 for at least 18-24 months. I've had the thing since July and just started overclocking it yesterday (not that it was slow, I just got bored).

i'm waiting at least 2 years before going core i7. nothing i do or play will need anywhere NEAR that kinda power.

plus prices will drop on current dual core CPU's a little while after launch of i7, so i'll just get myself an E8600 and OC that to 4.5 ghz.

or i might jsut scrap that and run ym E2180 at 3.2 ghz forever :D

When my E7200 at 3.6Ghz is inadequate for my needs then yes I will make the move. That's likely not until Q2/Q3 2009 though

First i want to see the platform overall. 3 cpus and one chipset doesn't tell me anything. I want to see many models from $200 to $500 and of course the AMD's response (if any).

Going for 920 + X58 at launch. I am already rounding up watercooling stuff for the switch.

i7 920 + X58 at launch

my @launch E6600 is ready for its refresh

Mine too, but I think I'll just plop a Q9000-series CPU into my current board.
That would hold me over for another 1-2 years, and then I can get the 32 nm shrink of Core i7, or who knows what else.

Don't forget Intel itself. Their Core2 Quad line will probably come down in price. Performance is still great, and they can run with cheaper motherboards and DDR2.

Thanks for the breakdown on memory GL Sauron

When I can get a nice motherboard, ram, and processor for $400-$500 I'm in. Never again will I spend more than $200 on a processor, $150 on a motherboard, or $100 on ram.

How long do you think for that, 8-12 months after the initial release?

12 months at the least, for this equipement anyway.

I'm waiting well over a year... I might "upgrade" to i7 around Q1 2010. Until then...

I'll be doing a graphics card upgrade sometime.... but as for a faster CPU... no need for quite a while I'm thinking...

3.76Ghz Q6600 is a very quick CPU and no games stress it yet.

why not?>

i'll just wait like most people who can't afford the newest hardware....i'm even still keeping my gx2 lol

although during the wait a mobo upgrade might be good...this board works fine but i bent some sata headers :(

I'll pass on this one. No real need for it, since I already have 4core x 2 @3.0.

I see no real limitation in CPU. I may upgrade my old P965 board to a Q6600. May not. Looking forward to possibly an upgrade to Sandy Bridge ;-) Just not a lot is all that CPU oriented. Gains feel marginal.
