Hello All!

Looking to do a build with the knowledge of all of you - I've done some research on the Intel side but no research on AMD.

Looking to build a new PC from the ground up minus the data drive(s) as I have a few 1tb's around.

I'm looking at something based on the i7 950 platform (or an equivalent AMD chip), lots of memory, SSD boot drive, ability to support 4 monitors (2 to start with).

I am actually hoping to order today.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

This will be my primary work desktop - some development, web, email, photoshop/dreamweaver, not big into PC games because I have never had a PC capble - this could change. Virtualization will be a MUST as I build test environments quite often.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$1200 - not a huge deal here as it's a write off.

3) Where do you live?

Montana

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

Case, Proc, Memory, Motherboard, Video Cards, Cooling, Power Supply, CPU Compound, Boot Drive (SSD)

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

I have some 1TB drives hanging around for data drives.

6) Will you be overclocking?

Not thinking so.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

I have 2 19" viewsonics - would like the ability to add a second card to support 4 monitors in the future.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Today!

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? etc.

USB 3.0, SATA 6gb, raid would be nice but not a deal breaker, I know the terms Crossfire and SLI but that's about as far as my knowledge of video cards goes - as I said I have never been a PC gamer.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

Yes - Windows 7 x64 Pro or Ultimate - Or any of the server oses available through my MS partnership.
 
I recommend you build something based on the i7 2600K. You know what I mean.
 
My current PC is really on it's last legs. I don't necessarily need to order ASAP, but it really needs to be done soon. You think the 2600k is that much of an upgrade to the 950?

Not 100% sure TBH. At least a 10% to 15% performance increase judging from past Intel releases.
