Let’s Get Organized

Huh, I though it was only mine... not sure if that's good or bad.

Nominate- screw that! Just pick something!!! If it's something you can do just make up a job and do it. Sound good? I was thinking have certian folks do certian things vs. everybody doing everything we might have better luck.

I dunno, I just make this stuff up as I go. I've been in the field all week, major brain damage here. Just fill in the blanks and I can get beck to edit the top thread, or DR_K can.

I'm dying to ask. What do you do Marty?

We really should push our "crap" to one person or a couple and have them turn them into computers. Extra stuff that wasn't needed could be sold on ebay (or something) to buy any missing parts. The computers could fold for a generic HardOCP account, but a certain number of points could be payment for donated items......

Is this making sense?

Yeah. But i think in order to do this, we would need to make a master list of who has what that they'll ship to location X? Where should we make that? Because we've got a lot of stickies already (at least IMHO) (don't hurt me DR_K13! ;)).

I'm suggesting no master list. Just ship you crap to one person will get receive it. That person can then start putting exclusions on it...... Not certain this is the best idea, but the best I have come up with today.

Do you mean someone to assemble and send out comp's from said junk piles?

or to run it on their electricity after they scrap it together?

I like the idea of pushing all our crap to someone, but being that someone might not be the best. This kinds leads to the FBOX deal the Aussies do, build a box from donated parts and give it away. No money, frees up all those legal stickys, someone (in another thread here) said the had Kyle close to this idea.

I'm kinda sure we could do this on our own as it's just a modded parts swap thread type of idea. The person assembling the boxen and shipping them would need some funds to ship them thou.

What I do, it's not all that interesting. Small company, boss loves me. Kiosks basically, unmanned standalone metal boxes with computers in them, touch screens. I do everything across the board, R&D/HR/all tech stuff/servers/firewall/mow the grass... Travel to the cities and setup the networks. Manage all the techs in all the markets. ...purchasing....I'm still waiting on my quote for 40 2.53g boxen....

3600 sq ft warehouse with a full T-1 for one guy.

Depends on the model. If someone has a decent amount of space and free electricity, I say 1 farm that runs for the Horde at large.... If that's not possible we set a list of volunteers that can take the units and provide admin/electricity.

bastard. *2 posts up. damn im slow tonight*

as to the t1 and space etc.

I can put together and get working. as to how many i can house...
that is up in the air until we get our first full month of a bill with 4 running
24/7 and leverage on the fiance

Sweet job. My best was my last (from an IT standpoint). One September I was able to purchase 250 PIV 3.2Ghz's......At that point I had about 700 computers I was responsible for. I am glad I wasn't into folding at the time. It would have been very tempting.

I'm good with the hardware but suck at Linux as I've never had to deal with it.

right now im just installing w2k on everything... but i have played with
it in the past, set up some webservers, email servers etc. really fun
stuff.

I am thinking about migrating a couple of them to linux to make
them fold faster.

My friend who is doing stuff with digital video jukeboxes... was showing me some sites
that are developing 3.5" form factor cpu boards. god i want some.

The hardest part about my job is all the boxs are 1000's of miles away. If I screw them up, it's not just a walk around the building.... I'm working on a model to replace 300 p2 300-400'mzh s with P4's. That might be interesting..... Frankly I have not installed folding on any units in the "production" field. Just have not tackled that one yet, plus most are on dialup so all that mess.

Dialup? whats that?

yet another farther off rant...

but isnt it hard to think about getting a bunch of junk together and making a
somewhat slow folding box.

when all you see is "Explore everywhere.. Buy here... Click to Buy... AMD 64....NewEgg.com"

flashing before your very tired eyes.

Just noticed this thread...a mere 3 pages in :D . I am more than willing to cordinate future contests. I have a small one under my belt (gmail), and the CPU one is coming to an end soon. I have sort of learned the ropes and am constantly thinking of ways I could have done the CPU thing better. Plus, I am learning a bit of php so in the future I woudltn have to do the stupid email entry. I have enjoyed doing what I have thus far, and will happily do it again.

I've got an idea.. not to be an ass about it, but how about someone write some "new" news for hardfolding.com front page? Since the newest is from what? March of last year?

Or updates to the history page? We've got a tradition of kickin ass here. We should pimp it. FLECOM, BillR, Tigerbiten, SoL, etc.. you guys have all been here longer then most. I'm sure you've all got great stories to tell or big accomplishments you can share.

I'm just throwing out some ideas late at night. And speaking of longtime [H]'ers.. anyone seen the Moose recently?

I think I saw one of the Mooses testing his [H]'s last night... and in the AMD forum I believe it was.

about time! your stuck with us now, note edit on first post.

I'm willing to help with the contests,etc... I've helped a little with the CPU contest, more of a consultant and donator than anything... Assuming Viper is up for it, I could be contest co-coordinator (assistant coordinator)?

I'm also working on that folding boxen spreadsheet (need some more input guys!!) with Hito, unhappymage and a couple others... I basically just collected the data for personal use and decided to try and help the [H]orde in whatever way it could... I don't think we're anywhere near a finished product, but the data is there..... I update it every few days.....

Keep on Folding!!

Hey Marty, I'm up for collecting/building, if you're still up for hosting.

This isn’t a rant, just an ordinary guy who usually has little to say.

Interest in anything just naturally wanes. Many people have come and gone from this forum and team. It’s like that with anything. Things just run their course.

I have a full time job and a growing list of commitments and the only reason I don’t smack my name down on the list for something is because I know I couldn’t give the role the attention it deserves. I’m comfortable with my effort and contributions, which isn’t the same thing as complacency since I’m reminded daily by the 20 something boxes running 24/7 in my apartment.

For quite some time now I’ve been contemplating pulling the plug. It’s just so LOUD in here! And hot as hell in the summer time. Everything’s pretty much upgraded as far as it can go, I can’t add any machines to the mix since I’m tapped out on my electrical panel. If I plug anything else in I trip a breaker. If I turn the lights AND the fan on in the bathroom while the lights are on in the bedroom, I trip a breaker. I have to power off a box just to make some fuckin’ toast. :)

Last year I promised myself I would shut things down when I hit a million points, a nice round number. That was last week.

I swear kicking heroin must be easier.

If I recall correctly, years ago shortly after the project started, relic used to co-ordinate a steady stream of spare parts donated by a solid core of team members. The result was several hundred machines folding that otherwise wouldn’t have existed. They weren’t speed demons by any stretch, in fact most were slow even back then. It was a lot of work for relic and that core group. It was a hell of an effort. And like you would expect, relic was never comfortable with being called a leader. Things just run their course.

But it can be done again.

There is a lot of history around this teams efforts, mostly recorded in this very forum. We’ve witnessed courage, sacrifice, bickering, humour, teamwork, support, and the discovery that the more you give the more you get back. Too bad much of it was lost (purged). A condensed version of [H] history would make for a fun read, a stroll down memory lane for some and a history lesson for others.

SoL- Thank you for what you had to say, honestly. It would be nice to have the complete history here since I'm a major newbie at this. Also I know you and many others have done way, way more than your share.

EDIT.

"But it can be done again" I think this team was #1 once, show us the way back!

Edit: I just wanna kick the Aussies ass, is that so wrong?

I'm game. I think basically we need to start collecting stuff and go from there. I've got about 3-5 crap boxen to assemble (300-400mzh). Nothing I can't do, just have not had the time and the speed of them makes it less interesting.

We could collect/build/test and ship boxen to other members. I can host some. The only problem is covering the shipping costs going out the door. Just had a though, the reciever could pay the shipping directly so that should free up and legal issues.

Where abouts in MN do you live?

And I will setup my cluster dang it!

Sol if you need to pull the plug there are a couple of people who have free electricity and the space to house those box's and let them fold.

I live in Plymouth, work in Crystal. Wouldn't bother me to run down to your work to drop them off. Could probably wait until I have a few built, then run them down, have them folding while they were here.

Were you thinking of running them naked, or stuffing them in cases? How many were you planning on hosting?

I can start this whenever.

Oldbenwa

SoL- If you so choose, and you're allowed to do so, I'll brush up on my electricals and see if I can install you another breaker, or at least give you a dedicated 10-20A breaker for your units. AFAIK, at least in the US, an extra breaker doesn't need a permit, not so sure about Canada. But, once I head back east in August, I'm more than willing to make an extra trip to help out a fellow folder with what I can. I may not have the most parts or comps folding, but I scrounge as much as I can. :D

I need to keep room to burn in my work boxen, burn in=fold as long as possible on them. That's about 30 units of space to keep open, one shelve. I have another shelve same size, could fill that one up. 30-60 should be cool. Power (getting the amps to the location) will be interesting, I can have circuits installed. Currently have a few drops over there, and a 220 v circuit I can convert to 2x 120 lines.

Cases/naked I don't care. Naked would take a lot less room for sure. Running two boxen off one power supply would be a major plus.

I've got some ideas for a new part gathering thread, let me mull the over and post later today. I'll PM you once my brain starts working this morning.

Ohh, you any good at Linux? Were gonna need Linux on these I'm guessing since the price is right.

And one potatoe on that shelve, right? ;)

If you can install my distro by yourself or with over the phone/IM assistance, then it should be pretty brainfree to keep running, and easy to play with in the meantime. Once it's running I could ssh in to do configuration changes or upgrades. I have a release coming soon, since I realized that there were some fairly major bugs to track down in 0.8, but once I fix those it's all ready :D

No [H]'s because I'm at school :(

I've dabbled a little bit in Linux, and I can follow directions easy enough, so I think we'll be alright there.

Anxiously awaiting your new thread Marty! :D

It is Thursday again...who is on emailing Steve for the front page mention? I can if noone is going to....I don't know him but it shouldn't be too big a deal.

I vote OSUGuy98 to be my contest co-cordinator (even thought hat wasnt an option xÞ ). It was handy having someone to bounce ideas off of, and for future contests a bit of help in orginizing everything and getting it to run a bit smoother than the CPU contest would be great.

Done. Don't let what ever is listed limit things. If it not listed make it up, more than one person per thing -it's all good.

Bump to fill some missing spots!!

Keep on Folding!!

i'll be the guy who writes in invisible text all the time. why not?

other than that (i.e. pissing marty off) i could probably help remote admining machines, doing random tech support, etc... as long as it'll work through a proxy or i can convince my dad to open a port for it.OMGWTFBBQ ROFLCOPTER LOL
seriously, i'm gonna be handing him a list of 20 or so ports/ranges so i can do stuff this summer on the internet (coupla games, bittorrent, irc, etc.)
blah blah blah blah invisible text is here to stay!!!!!!!!1111oneonetwo
would remote admining just be ssh type stuff or more like the windows remote desktop kinda thing? i can do either, but i'm better in windows that linux (at this point, but i'm looking to change that)more random crap here... hi marty!
nothing to see here, folks...

20 bucks for the downstairs guy to walk up stairs and smack you in the back of the head.

Remote monitoring, hey what ever works. If things get setup, tell me the ports and I'll poke them. Could do a PAT or something for the ports you have working outbound. Map port 111 to 3389 or something (made up the ports).

Can't you just pop a switch infront of your "linux deally" and pull a second public IP off the DSL/Cable modem? Have you own network? Dad might not like this huh.

Let's see you make the switch invisible!!!!

Please map port 22 on the fold-server to port 2401 on the real world. 22 is ssh, and we don't want to open any services on the port they belong to. Security through obscurity ;) 2401 I picked because it goes straight through the firewall on our end.
You're on, but just spend the $20 on folding stuff. That's what I'd do anyways. :D

Could we cetup a relay/proxy or something for you? I'm not quite sure what I'm talking about here. Bounce traffic form my network to your's throw a port or something something.

Can you VPN out of there? Setup a VPN w/ default gateway on my end, all your traffic from a box uses my network as a default gateway.
I mean port forwarding. On my linksys router, it's under advanced->forwarding. I have no idea how your network is setup with the t1 and all, if you can draw (or asciiart) a picture, perhaps I can clarify a bit better.

Basically, what I want to happen is I say "ssh martysip:2401" and it gets redirected to fold-server:22. Oldbenwa set this up on his network (albeit with port 22), maybe he can help you.

Ok, either I'm confused by our posting in different threads, your confused, or everybody else will be.

Anyways, hopefully Oldbenwa get's off his butt and we can get that setup here today, you gonna be around?

VPN- That idea was to pass WU's to your boxen, nothing to do with fold server. I'm just trying to get your boxen WU's!!!!

Fold server ports: I can do anything I want. Naked public IP mapped into anything (IP Cop/linksys router/dlink router/smoothwall/make the fold server sit on a public IP naked (yikes, I'm liking the word naked this morning....) Crazy things with my main firewall ect.

Honestly I'd like to keep all this insecure Linux stuff off my internal, I can to a DMZ off the firewall too.

That was a joke about insecure..... don't over heat there.
