There's lots of things to improve the game, or add some flair, but I think as it is it has a lot of the core mechanics of fun.
Simply put, its very easy to get into, the game is technically accessible to various skill levels.
A lot of what is suggested is things most new players won't notice, but there are subtleties that a lot don't realize. How many people shot the gas station in there first run through of No Mercy?
How many used that against a tank? A horde?
The ones clamoring for more are the ones who are at or near expert level. It's because we've found the "mastery" of the game to a degree and we need more to push us or it gets boring again. If they become requirements for survival, how does the new player deal with it? The accessibility level rises. Difficulty levels are a cheap way of getting around accessibility. What valve has done, I think is excellent, not too complicated, but still requiring a bit of skill to get a handle on it.
