Left 4 Dead: patch this week

OOH AWWW GAWWD get the tank off me AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Tank chances feel about the same, but the increased chance of a Witch is a great update. Witches add a lot to the gameplay.

Yeah, I haven't been able to play the patch yet, but a few of my friends have and they were saying that the tank spawns weren't that bad - and that they may have actually been less. I think their logic is that the stock game has very few tank spawns, and that it's actually the server admins that are upping their spawn rates to unacceptable levels (i.e. every stage).

But with all the people I play with, everyone pretty much agrees that tanks ruin the game. Especially when the survivors are still on tier 1 weapons.

I'm going to try it out tonight. The Smoker and Hunter changes seem very welcomed.

I've actually been pretty successful with the Smoker, even before the patch. I was never really good with the Hunter, OTOH, even before the patch. Unless the other team is stupid, Hunters don't do well unless you team-up with a Smoker - e.g. Smoker drags on Player 1, Player 2 runs out and you pounce. E.g. if there's two hunters vs. two survivors, the survivors need only side-step/melee, and both hunters are dead if the survivors are competent.

OTOH, if they're not...yeah the damage nerf is meaningless, since being pinned is pinned. *Shrug*
I guess I'll see after a few more rounds tonight.

Just set the tanks on fire and run. All you need is a molotav. :D

So your telling me I'm the only one who's game now locks up when I hit quit? This is really annoying. Worked fine before the patch...

That lockup on quit issue has been an on again, off again issue with all source games in Vista 64 for a long time. I was actually suprised it didn't happen in L4D since I always got it in TF2 and Portal. I didn't get a chance to try after the patch last night though.

Smoker broke way too easily, Im glad they buffed them.

What is really mean to do is pull a survivor and have the hunters claw him. Pounce is good in certain situations, but many times just running in and clawing as a Hunter is better.

Eh? One of my favorite moments from last night was being attacked by a tank on the first map of No Mercy. We had just exited the starting building, moved into the alleyway, then we heard the music. Tier 1 weapons, no molotovs, hunters flying across our screen. It was intense :) Managed to kill it in the end.

I think tanks did ruin versus before the patch, but only because they could hit trees and cars repeatedly to avoid losing control. Now that that situation has been fixed, and tanks have to actually attack to retain control, they don't ruin the game anymore. There was nothing more pointless than a bunch of survivors hunkered in a room for 5 minutes while a tank banged a car around until the survivors got bored and worn down enough to attack.

Now tanks are just another test to be passed, just like the witch, special events, car alarms, and all the normal "special" infected. If you can't handle any of these things then you don't make it. But if you can then you will probably win.

I agree. I'd like to find more weapons. Stronger slower firing hand guns perhaps (Everyone loves a .50 desert eagle...in video games anyway), how about more melee weapons? Certain campaigns (maybe one set in a military base?) could have the super-powered weapons that everyone would desire.

You don't find the abundance of miniguns realistic?

Whack a few bats or axes in there as starting weapons, make a chainsaw a pickup like with the later guns, and add a greater variety of slightly more believable (and interesting) weapons in like some crappy 9mms or an over/under if you're lucky or something, make the later pickups stuff like the Remingtons or Winchesters or MAC-10s you start out with, and adjust the volume and health of the zombies accordingly. Bingo bango, fun and involving and actually challenging zombie smashing. It might compensate for the way you can just run through the whole stage at the moment, and the melée weapons being the standard could actually encourage people not to play the dickhead and wander off cluelessly by themselves.

Also, twatting a zombie with an axe or a chainsaw would be sweet.

SO SWEET IS THE WIN

Agree on the melee. Especially with TF2 already sporting such a hilarious abundance: Hunting knife (sniper), Axe (pyro), or heck the most obvious - bat (scout).

Then again, a bat would have been out of place in a game like RE...not sure how you keep a straight face when you're swinging a bat. Ditto with hockey stick, but then I may be delving into slasher horror movie territory as well.

Lets go COMPLETELY out there. Give us the powerfist and the shishkabab from Fallout 3.

<_<

>_>

:D

I believe the issue with source games and Vista64 was the crash on exit, which TF2 still does. That is what people have been complaining about for awhile now. This is completely different. When I click quit on the main menu, the game completely locks up. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out of it. And even the, the Task Manager doesn't always make it to the front. Very annoying. I have been playing this game since it came out, and only right after this patch did this start.

New patch has introduced lots of fun new server/lobby connection issues. Valve excels again.

Well one thing they did fix is that once your game was finished (and return to lobby), nobody could see it. Apparently this is fixed now, so if the other team wants a rematch (and someone rage-quit in the finale), you can still have random people join to fill the spaces.

1. Tank spawns in the same place for each team.
-- This is awesome. Tanks used to ruin the game a lot of times since someone would get lucky spawns. Now it's fair. Good stuff.

2. Smoker buffs
-- Didn't see too much of a difference, but it does seem harder to break, I dig it.

And holy jesus flaming Hunters are insane now. :)

TF2 crash on exit in vista 64 always for me, I've learned to ignore it. All other games fine.

As for L4D, the minor changes have helped versus, being a flaming hunter is now so worth it, used to get flamed, and then meleeed way to easy and be near or dead before the 2nd jump.

Smoker, feels the same, but then again I've always attacked the smoker not the tongue unless next to a player getting pulled.

Tank spawns are good, but making them "predictable" is a mixed bag. Part of the tank spawn was like you needed it to come out at a "oh shit they are f-ed" moment rather than be the tank comes from a long way only to be killed before he reaches them.

I thought having it predictable would be more fair, but now the second team to play knows exactly when hes gonna show, along with the witch...

Cept the first team does too so they can post up around the areas where they will appear. Helps you prevent em from crowning the witch and gives you time to try and kill the guys(or force them to use them) holding onto the molotovs before they hit the tank spawn.

It needs to alternate who plays infected first every map. Whoever plays infected first knows where everything spawns.

While I don't find myself being meleed instantly as a hunter... I've found myself to have a harder time pouncing people... it used to be I didn't have to 100% be lined up to them on the jump...

I like the new patch. Finding more custom servers near my place now. Lag free gaming again! :D

Haven't had any issues. User error, perhaps?

I wish. Happened 6/6 times I've tried to play recently, with people connecting to user-made servers too. Whereas it used to fill within half a fart of going public it now takes almost five minutes. GREY

My bug (cpu's pegged at 100% causing hold ups and studdering) is mostly resolved, it is still happening but very rarely and the hold ups so far have not been longer than about 3 - 5 seconds which is much better.

CPU usage is at 70 - 80 average, still seems high but it is better than 100% all the time.

Is it me, or did my FPS took a dive after the patch?

Yea I noticed that, too. Look at my sig, too. Before everything was running fine, and then after this patch i got a little lag, and thought oh, it must be the connection but my connection was like 80% with full bandwidth and thats when I realized it was my comp...

Some things I would like to see in L4D

1) like you all said, new guns. but here is my twist. I would like to find guns in areas that I would find a
gun like that. What I mean to say is that, if I find a police car I should find a shot gun, hand gun, etc. If I
walk into a farm house, I should find a hunting rifle, hand gun (mag), shot gun, bow. Random other guns
would be located here and there to.

2) environment that you can use to change the game. shot a tree down so that it blocks a horde's rush.
shoot a support beam down to crash a pathway. blow up a car.

3) find objects to use. find a tape recorder - use it as a way to distract the dead for an easy kill.
find wire - use it as a decapitation wire HEHE, nail guns to board things up better.

Its a fun game.. but lacks soooo much. I get so board of it. I know exactly what to expect. I know
exactly where to hid and what to do.

I just wish there was more of a story line to it. I wish it was more interesting on how you found your
guns and etc.

Hell I think it would be fun has hell if the game was like GTA in that it was a HUGE city. You would
spawn in one area, take on a story line, and have to get from Point A. B. C. D. E. Z.... You would
never take the same passage twice... There would always be something that would be forcing you to
do something new.

I agree with you, but i think they just wanted to get everything right. Like having everything be team oriented and that kind of stuff.
