I know all you [H]ardcore gamers out there are all about your fast flat CRT, but i would like to know how many of you gamers have made the switch to LCD's with the faster response times comming out, and how many of you are sittin on your ol' crt.....
as you can tell by my sig, ive moved on to an LCD, and honestly i cant say theres much of a difference....

/dons flame-resistant suit, as this thread is guaranteed to attract the attention of someone bound and determined to convince us scientifically why LCDs suck and can't compare to their old-school CRT.

Anyway, I made the switch about a year ago myself and haven't looked back since. My wife loves my 19" LCD, so I'll probably swap hers out later this year as well.

I just bought a Viewsonic CRT P225fb series about two months ago, and am loving it. 99hz at 1600x1200 and 125or130 something at 1280. Sweet!!! I will not buy an LCD unless the response times are like the CRT's. If your a hardcore gamer and viewable frames per second matter to you to with a CRT.

I can't justify switching, when for the price of one high end LCD, I can buy 3 CRTs. I do a lot of digital artwork, and I haven't found an LCD that gives me the right colors I want.

I do need a new monitor, but I'm still going to go with CRT.

I got an LCD because its just more comfortable to look at than a CRT. It's sharper than any CRT and doesn't flicker at all. I don't care if there's a CRT refreshes at 160 Hz and is "laser" sharp, LCDs are just easier on my eyes. Color accuracy/depth and response time aren't particularly important to me, so long as the motion blur isnt a long smear in my games. Oh yeah, LCDs are so much lighter too.:)

I got an LCD because I needed to save desk space in my dorm room. I can't tell a difference in response time between it and my CRTs.

:) Just bought Sceptre X9 works great 19" LCD. Got it cranked up and it runs great. Took a little while to get used to it gaming, but I wouldn't trade it now.

I went to LCDs because they they are so much easier on my eyes. CRTs give me major eye strain. I have dual Dell FP2001s and I would never go back. And as far as price was concerned I got my LCDs during a big sale and they only cost only about $50 more each to get them instead of the CRTs. I wanted around 20" viewable, so I had to go with much larger CRTs that LCDs, bringing up the price to the CRTs a lot. (Would of had to get a 22" CRT)

I went LCD and I hated it. Gave me nothing but trouble. Im' getting a 21" CRT monitor soon from a freind for $100. Brand new, never opened. My mom is paying for it because she gave me the LCD for my Christmas and when stoped working on my computer, I gave it to her. I told her I was going to pay for the CRT but she instited. Think I'll slip $50 into her bag. ;)

you were probably running at a low hz.

its amazing how many people don't know that their expensive CRT monitors are running at 60hz.

Still using a 19 inch CRT (Samsung SyncMaster).

Rehevkor, there is no way HL2 can run smoothly at that res with an AthlonXP 3200. Is there?

Doubt it.

Still enjoying my CRT's, I'm not going to get an LCD for a long time... if ever.

Picked up a 19" BenQ T903 LCD...

it does 1280x1024, honestly dont think I would ever go past that resolution, never did on my old crt anyways...

And this panel has a 16ms response time, I cant tell any difference at all between this and my old CRT running at 1280x1024@85hz. As well like the poster above, I to dislike being on a CRT, it seems hard on my eyes as well no matter what the settings, might be due to my current eye problems but overall this LCD seems easier on my eyes all together.

Wont ever buy a CRT ever again.

I'm using a 19' CRT now, but I want to get myself a 19' LCD instead. It's much easier to transport and my pc gets moved a lot. The only that is stopping me is the price.

Sure does.

All in game settings max, no AA (who needs it at that res?) and 16af. It gets a little choppy in hectic battles, but it's generally smooth and totally playable. I'll post a screenshot with fraps later if you want one.

I game on an lcd (and a pretty cheap one at that) and I find it to be just as good as any CRT I've ever used. I never understood why people think LCD's are inferior for gaming.

P.S: Off topic but does anyone else think "an lcd" sounds better than "a lcd", I know you are only supposed to use an if theres a vowel but an seems to flow better in this case.

I just bought AN LCD (I agree for some reason that just flows better ;) after my CRT bit the dust *crying*. But after playing games on a Viewsonic VP201B, I really don't notice much of a difference. There is a little here and there...but uh..nothing to get worked up about. And I mean that's me REALLY REALLY looking for it and in a stupid way I might add (Me moving my mouse EVERYWHERE and fast and no point other than making ME motion sick) Or fine tooth coming for a freakin dead pixel (have 3, never notice unless doing a dead pixel test).

Actually I do notice the screen is WAY brighter :) in a good way. And colors can seem more vibrant. Which is all +s :D

I'm pretty sure it's grammaticly correct to use "an" before you say a letter, in this case "l".

Back on topic: I would love to have an lcd monitor, but I just can't afford one. So damn expensive.

How is that LCD for gaming? I'm unsure if the refresh and brightness are good, but thats a damn good price.

I love my FP2001, however I'm already wanting even more size. But it ain't gonna happen unless a bunch of cash falls in my lap. 1500 and up for 23inchs? Common.

One thing I notice with this LCD that I think is unique to gaming with an LCD is certain smoke or fog effects display a "layered" kind of effect which I don't think happens with a crt, but I'm not sure.

But the benifits outweigh the limitations for me.

Plus I was getting the CRT eyestrain, whether I ran my old CRT at high HZ or not. I use a crt all day at work, and looking at one at home was literally making my eyes tired bigtime.

as the starter of this thread, i thought maybe i should add another 2 cents. I used to run a sychmaster 19in crt like a lot of you probably did, and going cold turkey into an 1801FP from dell was rather a rough change....but since moving to my 2005FPW, with the widescreen and the faster response time than the 1801, ive gotten over it....

a second question to add to my thread tho, would be....wireless mice/keyboards.....i CANNOT stand wireless mice/keyboards for playing online games, and yet, some people swear by them...but for now, ill stick with my microsoft natual multimedia keyboard and my intellimouse explorer 4.0......for those of you with the newer versions of the wireless mice....have they gotten better?....Any particular ones like that MX1000 or whatever from logitech....ive tried it....and i still can tell its wireless.....anything i can do to speed it up or something?

Ordered. Thanks for the heads up. Not planning to use it for gaming, but i've had a hankering to try a CRT/LCD dual monitor setup for a while now. ;)

Nope, I was running it at 85hz. I can see the screen flicker no matter what is the setting. I am one of those lucky people that also get eye strain and headaches from the flicker of florecent lights. (They have a flicker rate of 120hz, I saw my eye doctor about this problem because it was interfering with work) Anything below 75hz actually makes my eyes hurt and water within about 5 minutes. So no, I wasn't running it at 60hz because it is actually physically imposible for me to use a screen at that rate.

Why do CRTs flicker?

I've had two and neither of them have ever flickered, yet I see them flicking in offices all time...are they leaving them on too long or something?

I use the VP201s, and I have nothing but great things to say about it.

Because there is a single electron beam sweeping the screen from the upper left hand corner horizontally, dropping down one scan line and doing it again. The speed at which it can draw the entire contents of your screen (pixel by pixel) is the refresh rate. The reason you can see them flicker, is the phosphore coating that actually emits the light starts going dark immediately after it gets lit up by the electron beam.

LCDs on the other hand only change state when the pixel changes intensity. So LCDs do not flicker, while ALL CRTs do. In a high quality monitor with the refresh set correctly, it's imperceptible to the human eye, but it's still there.

The use of the word "an" is based, 100% of the time, on the SOUND of the following word, number, letter, symbol, or whatever. If it has a vowel sound then you use "an" if it has a consonant sound then you use "a". So if the word was spelled "slethrat" (totally made up word) but pronounced "eslay-thrat" then it would be "an slethrat" not "a slethrat"

Back on Topic... My wife and I got dual 19 inch monitors about 4 years ago that are capable of 1600x1200@85hz. We are going to stick with these until one breaks and then we will probably each get a new 21" or larger LCD with 12ms or less response times (at least on mine, and since we will won't the same model, probably on both). I expect we are still a good 3 or 4 years from anything going wrong with these monitors though.

Are you sure about that? CRT's generally have much better brightness than LCD's do at the moment.

um...no they don't. You might be confusing contrast or response time. But LCD generally better the brightness area. There are plus and minuses of CRT vs LCDs and I'm sure different models of both might exceed the other (In my case definately my LCD is brighter), but the gap is pretty much closing up

Quite right, i was thinking contrast ratio. I retract my previous comment.

I'll stick with my 22" CRT until it dies. At that time, if it's around the same price to go with an LCD I will, otherwise I'll go with another CRT. I've seen a lot of LCD's, but I haven't seen any yet that make me want to give up my CRT, without them being about double the cost or more.

A CRT is my preference because the benefit over an LCD is better black level, more accurate color, and higher detailed images at high resolutions (all when properly calibrated). So 19" CRT at home, but stuck with a 19" LCD at work.

"flicking in offices all time"

Its usually because of the electronic interference in the building. Many office buildings use flourescent lighting which just wreaks havok on the RFI/EMI and even worse, it puts ripples into the ground outlets which corrupts the electrical power for the whole building (Which is why many office buildings prefer Active power factor appliances)

Home users almost never have the problem, as there is one fusebox for the whole house... However you can simulate the office environment by turning on a couple of hairdryers and any flourescent lights you may have.

LCD's will not flicker because they are digital, however even so - If the interference is bad enough you will get a corrupted screen.
