Latching Sata Cables FTW!

This is a new thing, really??? I have some of these for like a year or two. I totally though that was just the standerd. +1 for there awesomeness thoguh for sure
 
My MSI P35 Neo2-FR came with 3 of em, i like them. but there's one that i REALLY have to pinch so it releases
 
I know that most of us already know this, but it seems that many don't, so I thought I'd try to help clarify things.

Keep in mind that these won't latch to the 1st generation SATA connectors on motherboards, etc. because they don't have the surrounding plastic "box" around the "L" shaped port that the latch snaps into, just the "L" that the cable slides over. I believe that latching (2nd generation) ports & cables were introduces with SATA II. Both types are shown in the pic below; note the non latching 1st gen SATA connectors (red) at the bottom & the latching 2nd gen SATA connectors (yellow) at the upper right.

As for those who broke their connectors...you have to squeeze the latch down on the cable before pulling it out of the port and remember that that little "L" is quite fragile.

I kind of like the videos, but they run long. <que joke about "they run long in texas"..> but this seriously could have been like 30 seconds long.

if you push the little metal tab in, they come off a lot easier...:D

Uninstalling an extra long video card in my old case, I managed to do that with a non-locking SATA cable to one of my HDDs (part of a RAID mirror, so no huge loss, but it still sucked). The little SATA connector is fairly weak compared to the gigantic IDE connector. (I bent the pins back, superglued the plastic back in place, placed the cable in the connector to hold it together, and I'm using that HDD as I type this sentence.)

Ok seriously those are sweet cables. I have WD drives and currently use a WD proprietary sata cable that clips on but those looks decent too. Plus they fit anything. nice find.
 
Locking cables are cool until you have to remove one from a tight spot. Invariably you will be irritated, working in low-light and the locking mechanism will jam. Then will come the swearing....the endorphins will flow and you will end up with bare sata wiring in your hand and the male locking connector still occupying the female side. :mad:
 
Yeah not exactly new technology but extremely helpful to the guys who haven't discovered it yet.
Gigabyte has these with all their boards now I believe, 100% better than those nasty old red ones.

Though not for $500 +- :(
 
Kyle just convinced me to convert all of my SATA cables to clamps, although all of my HDD cables are already clamps my dvd drives will now include them, since they seem to experience more vibration impact then HDD's

Run a short video about SATA cables, when everyone wants to know about the Intel SSD you got them hooked up to.

Damn you Kyle...and we all know you have atleast one more of those fuckin things around, just waiting for some RAID 0 benchies.

BTW. Keep the videos coming as long as you can afford the bandwidth. Your doin a great job. Like the format and no bullshit style of reporting.

Okey, the latchin is ok...

TAKE THE 790FX DQ6 Pull in2x 4870x2 or 3870x2....

try to remove a sata cable on the mobo....

Bottom (Gsata) controller, one of the ports, try to remove it without a screwdriver.

Try to route em.

The latchin is good, if they really are placed RIGHT GIGASHIT!.
I wasnt very impressed by their amd boards to be honest, pitty i wasted 318 usd on it(norway, more expensive.)
 
wow neat little vid you got there, I was one of the lucky ones that recieved them latching SATA cables with my EVGA 680i motherboard, and ya, that little metal latch sure does make a big difference when trying to manage cables in my computer case.
either way, I like the idea of having some sort of "tip of the day" video on the home page it makes me feel a little bit more connected to this particular site.
I wonder if this is going to be an ongoing thing, I hope so, I could always use some hardware advice from you guys, thanks alot.
 
My open-box IP35 from newegg came with 6 of the latching cables, they are great for staying in place, but they are kind of hard to unlatch in small areas where you can usually just yank the cable out.

I say they are a worthwhile investment!
 
Gigabyte gave me a bunch of those with my Socket 754 motherboard a few years ago. They are great until the metal piece snaps offs or refuses to come out of the Sata Socket.
 
My evga 780 FTW came with these.They can be a PITA if the tab is a little out of place.Very solid once installed though.

I dont know if this has been mentioned, but has anyone here noticed that Kyle is getting uber at videos?

At first he was like... uhh this is my radeon 4870, uh and my computer.

Now he is pro. Talking while whipping around an Intel SSD. He even made it clever by holding the yellow sata cable with the clip down at first so when he flipped it over we were all like "WTFBBQSAUCE."

Kyle, will you start you own news channel that runs 24/7?

Hemos are the BOMB for working inside your case or any computer setup. I keep a short set and a long set. If you don't have any, get you some.

I would like to be able to put together 3 or so a day. I don't know if that will happen, but short no BS spots and some news editorial is what I would like...and to also supplement some of the reviews as well. Our staff is getting a bit strewn out though, not sure it will be easily done. But I know I can develop it here in my offices though.

Thanks for the kind words, and please too let me know what you DO NOT LIKE about them.

1. Sound effect for the opening logo. I think we need one.

2. Static title screen. Did you like the one we used on this vid? I thought it sucked, but I was in a hurry.

3. I do not want to script them, but I need to get a beter flow on speaking and get rid of the UMMMs and AHHHHs.

I did use a positioned mic on this video. I think it worked well.

Very light background music??????

Suggestions and criticisms are wanted on these vids!!!!
 
I loved the title screen. These arnt advertisements Kyle, so dont have a 40 second intro with music.

Background music seems lame to me. I want to hear your voice and what your saying, not get confused with the music.

Yeah scripting would be more of a feed instead of your thoughts. I did a video on "reasons to build over buy" for an English class (uber project). I really didnt want to script it because
A)Were not news anchors, we dont stair at cameras to read the news to us.
B) I cant read a book and put a proc into a Mobo.


If I can make a suggestion on some more videos to display:

We have a lot of people on this forum that are boutique buyers because of the fear of building, others buy to save time. You might produce a video in like 5 or 6 , three minute segments on how to piece one together.

Id like to see how you guys overclock processors and videocards. It takes me weeks to find max stable OC on my proc.

Oh yeah, and buy Hard one of those hydrolic HDD crushers that push the bearings out of the drive and cave it in. Id love to see one of those puppies destroy a HDD.
 
Kyle, dude, I love the "umms" and "ahhs"! You're just using pure personality, a script could kill that. Its obvious you know your shit, and when you speak (without a script) it shows. Keep it that way bro.
 
Oh and PS: yeah, I think a music/animation intro would be a nice addition to standardize the videos.
 
^ Should probably clarify, just a sound clip (maybe a whoosh) to go with the animation is what I'm implying. The animation looks great!
 
Not to be a comment whore, but to touch on the scripted comment: I use to love the site 3dgameman.com-- but his reviews are just so repetitive because they're scripted. Thats why I stopped watching them, they stopped being unique. Your videos are enjoyable when its just you talking about the product's pros/cons.
