Dear experts :)

One friend of mine asked me to propose a laptop for her. Unfortunatelly, I'm a huge PC cases guy and have no glue about laptops available on the market. Could you , please help me and propose something having requirements below.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Web browsing, Photoshop for photo procesisng, Watching movies
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
650 Euro
3) Where do you live?
Finland
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
RAM 4 GB, HD as big as possible, everything else is open
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Nothing
6) Will you be overclocking?
No
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Since photoshopping is here the the higher resolution the better
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Nothing special

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
No

Cheers,
Alexei

sirmonkey1985, thank you for following this post!

650 EURO would be 860 USD

You can try this site:
www.hintaseuranta.fi

It's in Finnish but very strigtforward to use. You type the laptom model in the first search field and it will return where you can buy it and how much it will cost. It's like finnish price tracker :)

Do you need before VAT or after Vat?

This one may stretch your budget $759.01 ex vat

gwarren007, thank you for proposal! Actually, configuartion of this laptop looks sexy and it is within the budget in finland. Just check here:

Did you have any positive experience with these laptops?

I personally like hp laptops, but I wouldn't get the one you posted.

CPU: Intel Core i5-430M (DualCore) 2.26GHz
RAM: 3072MB DDR3, HDD: 500GB, TFT: 15.6" Wide
WiFi: Yes, WEBCAM: 1.3 MP DVD: DVDRW

£622.50 ex VAT, £731.44 inc VAT

The only difference I see is your laptop has Intel and mine link AMD. Unfortunatelly, I could not find same laptop with Intel processor in finland within 650 Euro. Is it AMD that makes you not likeing my link?

The newer processor (i5) or the quad core would be better for what you will be using it for.

another good option might be this one..

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 2.10GHz
RAM: 4096MB DDR3, HDD: 500GB, TFT: 17.3" LED
WiFi: Yes, WEBCAM: Yes DVD: DVDRW
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (32/64bit)
£537.34 ex VAT, £631.37 inc VAT

little over priced compared to the i5/i7 mobile versions.. but for the fact that this will be used for photoshop i would pay the extra for the larger display and higher resolution.. this is also the same laptop my cousin currently uses and the laptops nice and can play crysis of all games :p

That's one too expensive for my budget. Starting 820 Euro in Finland :(

But do you have anything against AMD? I never used AMD. Otherwise laptop looks good. I gues sit will handle Photoshop well. At least I have Core2Duo E6750 at home with 4 GB RAM and Photoshop runs just fine.

Anything against them, no.

I narrowed down laptop selection to the list below:
gwarren007 , sirmonkey1985 - thank you for assistance!

Lenovo G550: http://www.jimmspc-store.fi/tuote/NTD5GFI

Toshiba Satellite L500: http://www.markantalo.fi/product/tietotekniikka/kannettavat-tietokoneet/SATL5001V1/toshiba-satellite-kannettava?Selected=Specifications#tProductTabcontent

HP Pavilion DV6: http://www.jimmspc-store.fi/tuote/NTD5GFI

HP Pavilion DV7: http://www.jimmspc-store.fi/tuote/VG658EA%23UUW?t=false

I've sent this list to the friend already. Still , do you have any comments on the list like "Never buy this laptop!!! It will fail miserable within 3 months of light usage :)"

out of all those choices the DV7 is the best.. the old pentium dual cores(they are not core 2 duo's) are horrible..

The Lenovo G550 is the best out of those choices in terms of build quality. I disagree with sirmonkey1985 that the Pentium Dual Cores were horrible CPUs. They're still better than AMD CPUs and provide significantly more battery life than AMD.

With that said, in terms of best bang for the buck, the HP DV7 is a good choice due to its significantly larger HDD and Blu-ray drive. BUT it only comes with Windows Vista. All the other laptops comes with Windows 7.

Danny, Thank you for your opinion! Actually, I have exactly the same understanding. Lenovo is for durability and DV7 is for power. Unfortunatelly DV7 comes with Vista that is ok OS but in future upgrade will be needed to Win 7 or Win 8 and this will cost at least 100+ USD.
