will a laptop core2duo 1.6 ghz precessor work in a desktop motherboard. daughter dropped it broke the screen and killed the hard drive. thought this might a good htpc.

if it is a socket P you'll need a socket P motherboard. There are not very many options out there sadly

If that's the Core 2 Duo SU9600 then no, there are no desktop boards.

If that's the Core 2 Duo T5200, then it's Socket M and I think there are some desktop boards for it, but I bet they'd be expensive.

Can you use CPUz to find the model number?

I say just replace the hdd, get a external monitor, hook up a mouse and keyboard up to it and it should be alright.

yup i say replace the HDD. rip the display off it and connect it to a monitor. ya basically have yourself a mini computer and can be used as an htpc as well.

I wouldn't even rip the display off. Just leave it on and plug an external monitor on. Most laptops detect the monitor on their own and if not, then they typically have a function key to switch. Most HD TV's are coming with RGB connectors now, so if yours don't then you could easily buy a converter to DVI or HDMI. If you are running XP Media Center Edition, Vista, or 7, then you could also use a media center remote control with it. Many of them come with the IR hookups just in case your laptop doesn't have one. That would save having a keyboard and mouse cluttering your shelf.

Edit: Also, check eBay for replacement displays. They can typically be found for under $100.

the advantage to ripping the display off the laptop is that you can just use the laptop as a keyboard with the display. so stick it right in front of the monitor. use the laptop keyboard and attach a usb/wireless mouse to it and there ya go.

All this to salvage a c2d mobile? Seems like more effort than it is worth to me.

I just bought a Jetway mITX board off NE for $149 that is socket M, DDR3, support's o/c'ing and has a full PCI-E 16X slot...the Donor CPU is a Core2Duo 2.4Ghz, which will o/c nicely :D....
