Lame Starcraft 2 plot

There are *SPOILERS* in this post. After playing through the campaign, the missions were entertaining and I liked the variety but half of them had almost nothing to do with the plot. They could have made campaigns for each race instead of adding pointless missions were you just make money.

As for the actual plot itself, people were right when they said that it is exactly Warcraft 3 in space. With the main villain being cured, the zerg are the good guys now and all three races now team up against a new big enemy. Most of the characers were uninteresting and cliche. The original SC was always interesting in part due to the characters but in the case of SC2, I just didn't care whoever died or what happened to them. The dialogue was also pretty bad.

The lamest part was the ending which did surprise me somewhat after all that had happened in SC where everyone vows to kill Kerrigan for all the manipulation, betrayal, and slaughtering billions of people. Now they take the biggest villain in the SC universe and "cure" her.

Of course there are still two more xpacs coming and anything can happen but so far the plot for SC2 is not impressive. If it were not for the awesome multiplayer that SC2 has, SC2 would not be anything special.

With all that being said, the 60 bucks for the game was worth it for the multiplayer alone.

Spoilers below:

Please tell me this is a joke, you like the characters more in SC 1? Yeah man those monitors yelling at each other with a little monotone zeal were really compelling. What a joke, the voice acting was great compared to any title out on the market today, even heavy rain had a lot of bad voice acting, Starcraft 2 for what voice acting there was was good. Not to mention I loved the story, and I loved the protoss interlude, looking forward into time with Zeratul. I thought the plot was awesome, neither of the characters are cured, she's just human again. She still has to live with the idea of being the largest murderer maybe in history, and Raynor had to kill the man he owed his freedom to. It was awesome as far as any video game story goes. As for the cliches, they were purposeful, they're meant to be the way they are because they relate to modern stereotypes, but they're futuristic, and they made them entertaining and very funny. If you don't think almost everything you watch uses cliches, then you're an idiot. The idea was to use them in a clever and tasteful manner.

Also, he would have let her, but due to the "hybrid" created by the Xel'Naga and clearly some personal affects, he had to make sure she lived. All of that was awesome, I don't know what your problem is but there aren't really any better video game stories I have been privy to as of late aside from Heavy Rain.

P.S. The upgrade system, the alternate units, and the mission diversity was really impressive, I thought it was one of the best RTS campaigns ever.

I haven't even finished or have any intentions of finishing the SC2 single player campaign. The only way I'm going to finish the campaign is if there was some kind of unlock tied to multiplayer. (which there isn't) As a matter of fact, I haven't finished both WC3 and TFT campaigns. Mutiplayer is where it's at

Please tell me your post is a joke. An awesome story as any video game goes? The plot is nothing special and like many others have said is pretty much Warcaft 3 in space. If you think it's an awesome plot, than you any cheesy plot will please you. And yes the voices and characters in SC were much better than they are in SC2. I was expecting better than that lame ending too. The campaign was well made and had a lot of time put into it. It's too bad the story was weak. I am still giving it a chance with the next two xpacs but thus far I am surprised.

Yeah your right, clearly you not pointing out anything really specific at all and calling it Warcraft 3 in space has changed my opinion. The videos were fantastic, the scene at the beginning with Raynor in the bar had very thought out and cinematic shots. And no I don't like anything that is cheesy, but you've given me no evidence as to how the game was cheesy, you're just generalizing. If you ever study film you'll learn that all of the stories have basically already been told, it's how you compose which one you're doing that makes it good. For a video game, I thought Starcraft had a fairly compelling story line that kept me going. Not to mention the way they added to my feeling with characters through the mixture of in game cut scenes and CG cinematic scenes.

I'm not calling it Dostoevsky, but for a video game, it was cleverly intertwined with the game and enjoyable.

P.S. I don't watch porn to engross me in the rich story based around the protagonist pool cleaning guy.

Like I said, the campaign had entertaining missions and a chunk of the plot in it was just replaying what happened in SC which is fine. Other than the characters from before, the only memorable one was Findley. Story wise, later on is where I am dissappointed and the ending is probably what left a sour taste. They take a badass villain and make her a good guy again. All three races will now team against a new evil. There will probably be a lot more to it with the other 2 campaigns though.

Part of what made the characters in the original interesting was the banter between them before each mission briefing, there was much less of that here.

Also, ALMOST NO USE OF MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE CAMPAIGN !!!!!!!!!!

Played a bit of the campaign through and it really isnt very interesting, the missions have been varied so far from attack/defence/escort etc, but the game really is a bit...bland.

OP has bad taste - but that's just my oppinion, feel free to debate it

/sarcasm

edit: I did hate the unexplained Tal'darim though (theyre probably in the novels but I dont have those), and the fact that Mensk Jr. somehow magically found out about the powers of the artifact

Complete rubbish ending. It was a terrible copout. I wanted to like this, and really did enjoy it up until that final ending. It was worse than having the entire thing be a dream.

I def. noticed that Kerrigan = Arthas.

That said, there are still enough loose ends to make things interesting in the next expansion.

well, they split it into 3 games for a reason I'd imagine . . . . . Kinda like the Harry Potter books or Star Wars

I don't think Starcraft is Warcraft 3 in space, there are similarities yes, but Blizzard does that in all their games, they pay homage in subtle ways to most of the games they've made in the past in each of their subsequent games. It's natural that they would use a few elements from their previous games to make their latest and greatest games a better experience than the past one.

I'm glad they make games that way, it's a lot better than 97 percent of the rubbish that's been released over the years.

I think some of you are falling into the trap of having unrealistic expectations for a game that's been hyped to crazy like this, and then being trigger happy to criticize it.

Better you just try to enjoy it for what it is rather than try to criticize it for being not what your expectations demanded.

I bet when it's all said and done and we have all 3 expansions installed on our computers, we will look back on this and laugh about it.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't - all we hear is Raynor returning the single shot - could be he shot the gun outta Tychus' hand :D

According to the summary on the battle.net screen (before you enter the campaign) it says that a high price was paid; Tychus was killed. I think he's too significant of a character to die so soon though. Something tells me he'll live.

Tychus was dead either way; if he didn't kill Kerrigan, Mengsk would have had the armour suit cut off its life support. Earlier in the game Horner tells Raynor that Tychus had a gun to his head, as a signal could be sent to his suit at any time that would shut down his vital organs. Raynor shooting him was the quicker and probably more humane option.

Makes me wonder if he intentionally threatened Kerrigan's life so Raynor could put an end to his dilemma. Kind of feel bad for him, he was never really a bad guy. That drunken bar fight kind of showed how much in conflict he was with his situation.

No, Arthas = Kerrigan. WC3's story copied SC's, not the other way around. Recycling stories is pretty lame, but unfortunately not uncommon.

Anyway, some of my thoughts copy/paste from the other thread:
Story was good, I can't believe I didn't come across any spoilers before finishing it. I have mixed feelings about the ending. Considering that there's going to be another SC2 with a zerg campaign I expected the ending to be very expected, but that didn't happen. Instead, as promised, we have a "clear-cut resolution" - but one that raises a LOT more questions than it answers - well played, Blizzard. Nevertheless, some parts of the ending - Tychus, for example - felt a little underwhelming.

Feels like a LOT of what happened in the story (i.e. the entire Protoss mini-campaign) is setup for what might happen in the later SC2 games. What I would like to know is how the fuck we play as Kerrigan in SC2:Heart of the Swarm when she's no longer infested?

Glad someone made this thread now i don't have to play this game. What a gay ending, and yes a total copout.

From not playing either game, maybe the plotlines just run along side of each other. It would make it even worse that they made it 3 games.

She's still part Zerg (she's still got those funky zerg-dreadlocks).... so maybe thats why she needed to live? They'll still follow her, but now she's got a "human heart"?

I REALLY dont understand what you were all expecting. Kerrigan wasnt going to die - we all knew that - so she either turned human or magically got away. Either one would upset you guys and you would call it a copout - yet those were the ONLY two possible resolutions. I think the story was absolutely fine, and am genuinely confused about what you all expected.

I was expecting them to have a little story telling gumption and kill her off. Or kill Raynor, but they went the soap opera way and magically everything got better. We now don't have to hate her, she keeps the hair, probably the regenerative abilities, and somehow becomes MORE powerful because of this "cleansing". That's what I have a problem with. The refusal to actually DO anything. If you really want to get down to it, nothing happened in this storyline except Raynor trying to depose Mengsk and Kerrigan being saved. Other than that nothing happened and that's disappointing to me.

I endured 10 years of fanbois telling me how fantastic the Starcraft storyline was so I looked forward to this. I figured it would be cheesy, it's an RTS not Dragon Age, but they didn't even DO anything. They built this huge evil character to hate and then because the community liked her too much refused to kill her. That's what I have a problem with.

EDIT: Let me clarify, I love this game. I've convinced four undecided friends to purchase it and I think it's a must-buy for every PC gamer who even vaguely likes strategy games. I also loved every moment of the campaign, right up until that last mission. The fit and polish on this game was incredible, the presentation was amazing. I just can't stand that ending.

Here's hoping they retcon it. Somebody really should have died. I would have much preferred Raynor to have died, possibly at Tychus' hands (or gun) which would leave Kerrigan pretty much undefended which would open things up for a whole lot more interesting conflict for future games.

Why does everyone want death of the main characters so much? Why is there horrible trolling & bashing regarding this subject in the first place? Sure seems like no is one is happy that 1/3rd of the story isn't a bloodbath of everyone in the story.

I'm not sure if reading novels for the game have given me a greater appreciation for the story. I'm really enjoying the story so far & look forward to the expansions.

I haven't played it yet, and I know I am a moron for coming in here with spoilers.

Will some one true/false 1 point for me please.

I read the OP and if "all 3 races team up to fight a new super villain" is true then I am going to blow my brains out because this is ridiculous.

Because it's weak story telling. They built Kerrigan to be this huge evil creature and then... magically with some fairy dust she's ok and we can love her now, we can even sympathize because really she wasn't doing all those things. There is a part in the mission where her human voice speaks and she's "trapped" in the body. I wouldn't mind if they built it that way, but it made the entire story feel unneeded. It's like waking up and it all being a "dream" at the end. That's why it frustrates me so much. I don't want a bloodbath, I want consequences. I would like them to not be Mr Rogers Starcraft neighbors which is what the ending felt like.

And to aKrippler, it's what they are building towards.

It was almost implied at the end of BW that hybrids will play a large role. What kerrigan's role is is still undetermined. They really didn't answer anything at all in this campaign. Most of what happened was inconsequential to the overall picture.

I was impressed that the story was so character centered, but I actually loved the characters and it made sc so much more interesting. The zeratul maps were my favorite and I thought the story was gripping and engaged the player much more than the first. The side missions almost seemed necessary because there was actually purpose such as saving civilians or making money - to fund a war. Funding the war makes sense and makes the rebellion that much more realistic. Raynor didn't go out right away to fight to zerg, he had to build an army to retake the terran first.

The whole story isn't finished so I don't think it is fair to judge. Maybe Kerrigan is still evil or is now messed up? Who knows? Oh, and the overmind visions... I bet no one saw that coming. Blizzard still manages to give us twists in the story and it's impressive that they can still hold their audience captive after so many years. The Terran campaign is finished, but who knows what will happen now? I doubt they will go the whole world tree defense route, but obviously the xel'naga are going to be a threat that needs to be addressed asap.

as far as my opinion goes i loved the plot. The only thing missing maybe was that we did not get to see more character interaction whilst in between missions which would have deepened character development and attachment.

Yeah kerrigan became the good guy again and people are complaining. It's all for good reason, the plot twist with the zeratul missions talking about how kerrigan would have stopped the wrath from the void.

But come to think of it, we only see her being carried away by jim raynor in the midst of battle, that doesnt automatically mean she's now all and well. She could still have zerg roots deep within her and that is more than enough to carry on the storyline for the next campaign. We're still 1/3 of the way, i'll reserve complete judgement until we reach 3 out of 3.

And for those complaining $60 for a game with such a short single player, think of this game as an investment. Battlenet, unending support from blizzard, endless balancing of the game, etc. It gets better with time. AS LONG AS they release the other two campaigns at expansion-ish price i won't complain too much.

The only thing about the game that really bugs me is how gimped the multiplayer is. A lot of the Terran units from the campaign (and even the original SC) aren't in multiplayer, and it seems obvious that they took them out just so they can add them back in with the other two installments, so even if you don't care about the story mode at all, you still have to buy the next two games to get all the units.

I like the point someone made about some of the SP missions serving no purpose other than to raise money because wars need funding....but it does feel like it was padded with fluff to artifically draw out the SP mode into three separate purchases. Compare what happens in SC2's Terran campaign to that of the original game - a third of the missions, but about 200% more eventful.

I don't think so. Feels like they originally intended to have them, had the models & voice acting done, but could not fit them balance-wise.

I think we'll see new units we never seen before in the expansions.

The only unit I can tell, that ended up being cut from multiplayer, was the Diamonback. Originally unveiled as the Cobra with a machine gun instead of lasers, I guess it turned out to be too gimmicky for multiplayer. The other units really had no intention to be in multiplayer, but were made for single player nostalgia I guess. A lot of the new units mixed and matched the roles of the replaced units.

Uhm.. Lets see. That was a horrible story.

Worth 60 buck No effin way.

The Interactive scenes were not that great compared to lets say Mass Effect 1 and 2

Oh wait the Whole PLOT of this one was a COMPLETE RIP, some will say Starcraft is older.. Blah Blah, how many god damn years did it take to make Starcract2.

Ancient Uknown God Aliens made every one. Now they are coming back to kill everyone.
Hero Desperatly tries to stop the future, which might happen anyway.

OH wait how about C&C same friggen story line. Except no god aliens, but their resource infects people and transforms them ALA Virus (Kerrigan, infested humans) Hero tries to stop the invaders.

Seriously they could have really come up with something different.

The ingame ship talking was lame, some times it took me more time to click on idiotic plot scenerios then to beat some levels. There was no choices in dialogue which was lame imo.

Seriously who animated some of those scenes.. If you watch the characters move they don't bend their knees and walk around with sticks up their butts. What took them so long to make this game?

Narud is Duran from BW. He was the one behind Mengsk Jr. knowing about the artifacts.

Blizz has said that it will be like an RPG where she develops new abilities and so forth as you progress through the game.

For the end, what I was expecting was what Raynor said at the end of Brood War where he promised to kill her. It would have been cool to see him avenge Fenix. That is fine that it did not happen but I really wasn't expecting the biggest villain in the game to become a "good guy" yet again. Regardless of that, the story still is unfinished and Blizz my surprise us yet again.

Medics, Firebats, Vultures, Goliaths and Wraiths are all missing from the Versus AI mode. I haven't played multiplayer yet but I'm assuming it's the same.

Hellions and Medievacs serve the same purpose as the Firebats and Medics so they're no big loss, but I'm not buying the "it's not balanced for those units" excuse for the Vultures and Goliaths. I would bet money we'll be seeing at least the Goliaths added in future purchases.

I don't think anybody could claim Blizzard's writers and designers are the most original when it comes to their stories and characters. Starcrafts 1 and 2 "borrow very liberally" from Warhammer 40K (Zerg = Tyranid) whereas Warcraft 3 rips from Tolkien and traditional Warhammer. Hell, Raynor is essentially ripped from a whole heap of westerns. It's the quality of the core gameplay that lets the games stand on their own.
