Laggy Games

I recently bought a GeForce 7900GT, overclocked to 550:1750 Core:Memory. Anyway, I can max games like Counter-Strike: Source out, but some games just lag unnecessarily. One example would be Oblivion. Another is Quake 4, as well as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. For some reason, I have to lower all of my settings down to below maxed-out. I paid $300 to NOT have this problem. What else could it be? I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ venice core 939 pin, 2.0 GB of DDR RAM, SATA 3 gb/s hard drive, A8N-SLI motherboard... I don't know what do to.

Well, what resolution are you playing at? Oblivion, GRAW, and Quake4 are pretty beasty games.
You should be able to play Quake4 at maxed out settings 1280x1024 pretty easily, I'd say even higher maybe.
Oblivion(obbly ;) ) ... ya this game kills more computers than Bruce Willis. I personally would turn down some of the trees and draw distances and higher up the reso, but if you want it maxed out you might be able to 1280x1024, but definetly 1024x768 would easily max out.
GRAW, I personally hate this game.. so sorry, me no helpie.

I don't have a 7900GT so I might be wrong =\

Ya, if you want to play 1600x1200 and stuff maxed out... SLI

I'm running everything at 1280x1024. Quake 4--I have to turn it down from Ultra to High, and no anti-aliasing or else it'll rape me. =\

EDIT:
I tried turning stuff down to 640x480 with Oblivion and completely maxed everything out. It lagged like an ass, unfortunately.

Are you overclocking your processor any? It seems to be the limiting factor in your system.

If you think oblivion runs like ass, how do you think the poor sods running 9800/x800s feel?

Primary cause of stuttering and hitching in Oblivion is texture size (or lack of texture memory if you prefer to look at it that way). Doing a “setdebugtext 12”, fallowed by “tdt” in the console will bring up memory usage stats in Oblivion.

High texture quality can use 500mb of texture memory in extreme cases, but it usually run at between 300 and 400mb. Obviously this can cause lots of thrashing on 256 and 128mb cards.

Medium texture quality on the other hand, usually uses between 150 and 200mb of texture memory. This texture quality mode can be used on 256mb cards with little, or no texture thrashing. Medium can sometimes also be used with faster 128MB cards (memory bandwidth becomes VERY important).

As for low, it should ensure that no texture thrashing occurs AT AL, which is useful if you have a 128mb card with a very slow memory interface.

Okay, I just experimented a little bit. This is the weirdest damn thing...

[To answer somebody's previous question--I'm not overclocking anything. I tuned my video card down to 500:1500]

I updated my drivers and ran Quake 4 on Ultra Quality. Fucking beautiful, consuming 500 MB of texture memory--NO problems whatsoever. I go to turn AA to 2x. Gross. I get 20 FPS. Then, instead of wasting my time upping it to 4x or 8x, I decide to entertain myself by going straight to 16x, thinking I might get a laugh at how low my FPS is. What the weird thing was, I got 40 FPS, much higher than 2x. Also, it looked fucking beautiful. It was very obvious that the AA 16x had taken place like it should have.

Any suggestions?

should not have to turn everything down, check out my specs in sig, all the games you mention run great at full detail on my rig, 1280x1024, full aa, everything up.

the only thing i have OC'd is my vid card @ 550/555

I also have a 7900GT, although my memory is clocked a tad slower. I'm also running Quake 4 at High (not ultra), and not getting a constant 63FPS. I don't know about Oblivion, I'll reinstall it later and test.

things like this happening on my system too ... I'm pointing my middle finger at built the on-board sound card [Envy24 WDM]. I get stuttering sound when enemies are around me and or riding a damn horse in Oblivion. Only in those situations, I can max everything out and get my FPS to 10-12 and no stutter. Bring settings down/res down running 30-60 FPS indoors, jump into fight scene and major A/V stutter. WTF ... I think I have all current Vid/Aud drivers. I even tried this on x64 with fresh install . same issues OC'd my x2 to 2.5 didn't help at all, OC'd vid card, didn't help.

Maybe this isnt a useful observation, but your 3DMark 06 scores should be higher, I just ran it and got a 2730 on a 6800GS. Something isn't right in that respect..

Do a search and compare on the 3dmark website, see what scores people with identical hardware are getting.

I have a X700. Do I even make the poor sod category? :(

i have the exact same problem on my 7800gt...only if i use tr aa though. it's weird. if i move my mouse, it won't actualy move for a solid .75 seconds.

Alot of people are having that same problem. I'm using a PCI Envy 24 card and I get it too, but so are alot of SB users. Try using the quiet feet mod, make all your troubles disappear.

Finally figured out the problem. The card was in the wrong PCI-e slot, giving me x1 lanes instead of 16 lanes. -.- Don't laugh.

Anyway, I'm confronted with a new problem now. Some text on my monitor is blurry/boldish. I can't figure out what the problem is. I tried taking a snapshot, but it stopped being blurry after I moved it around in mspaint (whatever that's worth). I would think it's my monitor (19" LCD Viewpoint) but why would this happen directly after I switch PCI-e slots?

Oh, and before I forget... the blurriness occurs in straight lines down the screen. If I move stuff over, it gets blurry in the same pattern.

[UPDATE]

Fixed. :D I love myself. Topic closed.

hmm ... I just got into the mod-scene on Oblivion so I'll look that one up and try it out. I played the game on a friends sys. with a EMU 0404 ( Creative Audigy 2 ) no stutter. sob it's not even a gaming sound card. Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Oblivion can't lag, it's single player...
...I hope you're joking. In the case that you're not: we're talking about visible studdering and graphics card-related lag.

some may argue that "lag" can mean: A condition caused by network congestion, Eg: ONLINE

but it also means: hang (back) or fall (behind) in movement, progress, development, etc

so it works either way.

But when we're talking about a single player, and the graphical settings causing the lag, he should be able to realize we're not talking about latency issues.

The effects of online lag and fps lag can be quite similar in some cases. Both are refered to lag by some. Don't be a butt, you know what he means. Although his description is technically wrong, it works and is understood.

oh ya, i know what he means, i just like to clarify sometimes, so the thread doesnt get all "flame this" and "ban that".
these things do sometimes get out of hand.

Okay, for you perfectionists out there...

lag1 Audio pronunciation of "lag" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (lg)
v. lagged, lag·ging, lags
v. intr.

1. To fail to keep up a pace; straggle.
2. To proceed or develop with comparative slowness: The electric current lags behind the voltage.
3. To fail, weaken, or slacken gradually; flag.
4. Games. To determine the order of play in billiards by successively hitting the cue ball against the end rail, the ball rebounding closest to the head rail indicating the player to shoot first.

Notice what it says under "Games." TECHNICALLY saying "lag" doesn't refer to anything. Furthermore:

n.

1. The act, process, or condition of lagging.
2. One that lags.
3. A condition of slowness or retardation.
4.
1. The extent or duration of lagging: “He wondered darkly at how great a lag there was between his thinking and his actions” (Thomas Wolfe).
2. An interval between events or phenomena considered together.

I think #3 applies to anybody that thought I was referring to "online lag."
