LA Noire PC sucks.

Picked this up against my better judgement on the steam sale. Wow. What bullshit. Had to wait like 4 minutes while it checked for DLC. Graphics fucking suck big time. Performance is terrible (2500k/560ti). Anyone get it running decent?

9/10 of these reactions at least always betray that.

Nope, I had no preconceptions about the game and hadn't read any reviews or done any research beforehand apart from checking metacritic to see what the average review scores were. All I knew was that it was set in the 40's and involved solving crimes. It was cheap enough on steam that I was happy to buy it without knowing what I was getting.

The fact that it is more akin to an adventure game does not bother me, I grew up playing Sierra, Dynamix and Lucasarts adventure games.

Its the fact that the gameplay is just so dull, repetitive and constricted, and the shooting/fighting/driving/running sequences feel sloppy, unrefined and tacked on. It also does not help that most of the characters are unlikeable and do not resonate with me at all. So far I would rather be replaying police quest.

I am however very impressed by the facial expression technology, incredibly believable and lifelike.

I basically approached this game like playing a good movie or good book and that's why it worked for me. I strongly recommend any person go into this in the same mindset

Eh....if I wanted to experience a good movie or book I would watch a movie or read a book. If the gameplay mechanics are not engaging or entertaining then I really see little point in wasting time on a game irrespective of the narrative (which in this case I am finding pretty dull anyway).

Game is ok...I def would not buy again just because of the stupid DRM crap...and such. I spent about an hour looking for a workaround since the game wouldn't start for me and would CTD.

The game itself once you get into it, is not bad...the only thing I don't like is it does get repetitive. The graphics are pretty decent IMO. And the storyline isn't too bad either. I would give the game around a B- if I were to grade it. :)
 
This is actually a wonderful game, but console origins shine through. If you drive around the city you can see how much work Rockstar put into it.

Actors are extremely solid for most part and drive the stories ahead even when writing is bit lackluster at points.

I did not like floaty car chases and there was still bit too much shooting involved at times. Conversation options were bit unclear in certain interrogations. I was actually surprised how few puzzles this game had.

Bad performance is simply due to being locked to 30 fps which was quite silly decision. And not being the most optimized port in the world.

Shhh, don't confuse the Americans by making them realise there's a world outside their own time zone, their brains will probably explode or something :p It's amazing how much people don't realise it, I have family and friends scattered across India, Europe and my Dad does business with people in the US and it's amazing how many times the phone rings at like 10pm-5am and they're completely clueless that they've done it :p

say what?! I bought this game for 4.99 on summer steam sale and my bro and I were playing it the whole time he was visiting, its hella fun.
 
I think it depends on what your expectations were going into it. If you expected it to be a GTA clone (and who would blame you, since that's what all the trailers make it out to be) then you'd be highly disappointed. I didn't expect that, but I just feel too much of the interrogation stuff is arbitrary and not well explained. Same with the "different sounds occur when you are near evidence" or whatnot. I never could really figure out wtf was going on with the sounds. Mainly it seems to be a failure in explanation during the tutorial, but it could be poor design as well, not really sure.

oh totally agree on the sounds never knew if i had totally fucked up or not hahhaha.

the guy from heroes is in it though idk if you have seen that TV show but he looks exactly the same in game as he did in Noire it was crazy impressive

I know, I was just poking fun at you and the commonly held stereotype that USA-ians are oblivious to the world beyond their own backyard, especially being Australian myself I find it amusing when people don't consider time zones. Heck, he could even have been American from the west coast and it would have been a much more reasonable 11pm. :p

I liked the game, the annoying "OMG YOU HAVE A JOYSTICK PLUGGED IN? LET ME REMAP ALL YOUR CONTROLS TO AS IF YOU WERE PLAYING WITH AN XBOX CONTROLLER" BS was tiring since I had to unplug my rudder/joystick everytime I wanted to play.

Storyline was pretty cool though.
 
I was gifted this game on Steam but haven't gotten into it much yet. The gameplay is fun and I laughed at the lady for not wanting to rat out the jewelry store owner because she didn't want it to close and lose her lay-away purchase but it definitely wasn't ported with a modern computing device in mind. It runs on all of one core.
 
Anyone else read the first 75% of this thread before looking at dates and wonder why it was getting so many responses?

There are major design dilemmas with this game. It was an interesting take on how to make this kind of game more interactive but the main problem is that there's no clear-cut way to telegraph the clues without becoming tediously obvious or obfuscating the clues without becoming frustratingly difficult.

Therefore, the player ends up with what is supposed to be a who-dun-it with all the clues sprinkled at one's feet with dings and dongs indicating exactly where to look and what is or is not important. No matter how poorly one chooses the player is funneled to the conclusion. That makes for poor detective work. It doesn't take a whole lot of thought to play a game centered around prioritizing thinking to action and/or reflexes.

Then we have the added problem of trying to indicate clues via body language--language that is not culturally universal. Various cultures display and read body language differently: grinning can mean humor, embarrassment, fear, concern, and any range of feelings in between depending on the context. But there is relatively no context in a 2d world. The developers have to make the body language glaringly obvious in order for the majority of the observers to make any sense of the behavior and then that leads to one of two problems: either the game becomes too easy or the player incorrectly reads the over-acting as indicative of falsehood (a common tell of deceit).

The final problem, if this is one, is that there isn't much in the way of redeeming it once the player moves beyond those issues. Those things I explained above are the core of the game and there are not very many action sequences to get lost in if one wants to simply suspend disbelief and approach it like a live-action movie. So the whole experiment tends to fall flat and the experience worsens for those who have experience or training picking up on these types of things (good body language readers, interviewers, actual detectives/officers, etc.).
