L4D or COD:WoW

VS is where it's at. I've only beat the two VS campaigns once each, it's ridiculously fucking hard. We beat No Mercy last night on VS with all 4 people still alive. One of our people was being helped up and the other was on the ground be attacked while I was being chocked by a smoker. After the one guy got helped up, one of them helped up the other guy and the smoker got shot when I was at 6 life. We were all running for the helicopter with 50 zombies behind us and luckily I had thrown a propane tank down there that I had intended to use against the tank but he didn't run by it. So we blew all of the zombies up and jumped on.

What you have to do is save your pipe bombs for your egress. Toss it out, run for the evac, and hope you all make it before it blows.

Having played the prior 4 Call of Duty games, I can't say CoD5 is all that appealing. I really want to try the zombie mode in CoD5, though.

L4D is just a blast. Hope you have 3 other friends though.

This may help, but CC has L4D for 39$ and Best Buy will PM them. Might make your decision a bit easier. ;)

Ok.....so I had a similar question I was going to start a thread about, but saw this thread, hope the OP doesnt mind my intrusion...

It seems as though there are wayy more L4D fans than CoDetc. games. A friend has been hounding me to get the latest CoD game, but each time Ive been to the store, I just cant bring myself to drop the 50 bucks to get that title. Not sure why really....just....mehhh, no real interest I guess. Played the 1st CoD and liked it alot, but in those terms, once youve played one WWII game, youve kinda played them all. To that matter, I liked Red Orchestra better anyways.....

So, leaving the CoD debate aside....Ive managed to keep the wife unaware of a solid 50 bucks Ive saved up (damn bills)...though I know I can order thru Steam...she is a hound dog and has an eagle eye on the bank account....What I buy will have to be at a store.

And finally, to my question....

L4D or FO3????

I realize both have different story lines, yadda yadda.....but to me, it kinda seems as though both games are a zombie-ish shootem-up game.

One your shooting undead type creatures, the other your shooting radioactive mutants. They both kinda go hand in hand, ehh?

Im not too much into the mulitplayer aspect anymore, do to long work hours, 2 kids (3 and 5yr olds) and a moody wife. My gaming times are limited, mainly to after 10pm to 12, sometimes later if I dont have a job in the morning (am a contract cabinet installer) and weekend nights.

Ive mostly been playing TF2 since it came out and although a damn great game, i am beginning to tire of it. Ive tried multiple times to get into Diablo2, but it just isnt sticking.

I need a new "fix".

Why should I get L4D?

Why should I get FO3?

Dont just tell me one game or the other is "AMAZING". Id like to know WHY its "AMAZING".

Thanks

Why should I get L4D?
Because it's amazing? ;)

Really, all you need to do is read a few reviews. If you ask me, L4D's great because it's fun (vague quality, but a fitting word here), rewarding, polished and simplistic, which makes for a great multiplayer game. If you've never played a coop game before, L4D's appeal is something that may be difficult for you to really comprehend.

Why should I get FO3?
Well, if you're looking for a game where you're always on the edge of your seat, wondering if it's going to go around deleting your save games without a moment's notice, then FO3's your game :)

I appreciate the reply Phide....

I have read some reviews.....but for the most part..."reviews" are flawed IMO, I take a person word over a review anyday.

Is L4D only good if I have some friends to play along? How is the single player aspect?

Heh, so are you saying FO3 is flawed? It would piss me off to no end to play a game...need to go, save, come back and find out my saved game isnt there.....

Damn, just glanced at the time....I'll catch your response tomorrow.....Thanks again....

single player L4D SUCKS, multiplayer on the other hand *ROCKS*, even with total strangers, its a blast

sucks hardcore...

after playing L4D for a little while, i gotta say, it is a *great* stress reliever... i'm actually getting *more* school work and studying done because of it...

you can play it in bite sized chunks of time, and blasting through the zombies is a great way to unwind for a few minutes between classes or whatever....

my BIGGEST complaint are that all of the zombies are white people .... where are the black/east asian/indian/etc people?? i want more diverse zombies... when i'm playing i like to imagine that i'm killing the people in my city (NYC), so i need way more colored zombies to make the experience more authentic :)

Based on your description of your free time, I would go for FO3. Its a good game if you forget the first two. Once the sdk comes out, we should see some good content. I took my time on my first playthrough and I got about 3 weeks out of it. The atmosphere reminds me of the Stalker series.

On the other hand L4D made me finish FO3 faster than I would have. Before L4D, most of my friends were spread out with different games. Now that its out, we are all back together and its feels good. This is the best coop game ever imo. If all I played was single player, I would be bored in a month. Versus is insane and adds value to the whole package. I love stalking my friends as an infected.:)

First of all. How can you tell?
Second. I'm pretty sure they're not all white.
Thirdly... who gives a shit just shoot the zombies.

they aren *all* white, but 95% of them are, and the ones that arent are just a generic black guy... lame...

seriously, more variety in the races would honestly enhance the atmosphere of the game

/non-white, would like to also be able to shoot minority zombies

About the race issue.... maybe Valve got nervous after all the complaints about RE5 being racist.... dunno.

Anyway, I am glad to see this thread as I am also between these two games - definitely might go for L4D (incidentally, I am a big COD4 fan.... but looking for a change).

But I have a question about L4D. What is the most common form of communication? Is it text or voice? I am asking because I can't use a mic (need to keep it quiet) and I get really annoyed to hear kids screaming obsenities and stuff about each other's mommas.... this could be a deal breaker for me...

In my experience it's either voice comm, or none at all. there is no time to be typing stuff. I've only had one guy be a douchebag on the voice comm system. everyone else has been just fine. I don't think you have to worry too much about litle 360 kids muckin up your game for the most part, the pc side is a bit more mature and tolerable. not to say there won't be some idiots...but they are fewer and farther between.

PESTILENCE - thanks for your reply, that clears things up. If I don't have voice comm, will I be at a bad disadvantage?.... is there still a point in playing or would I be seriously gimped?

There are the usual preset voice commands.

Unlike before where you could press say x then 4 you hold down the button and motion with your mouse which voice command you want, whether it is to laugh, say thanks give a warning.

Don't need voice commands.

It will be fine until your team stops to make a strategy, in that situation you could still hear what the are saying(if you have ingame voice enabled), you will just have to respond with keyboard or preset commands. At the end of every campaign and you will have to face hordes of regular zombies and boss zombies till the rescue arrives. This, in my experience is when voice is needed the most, but you should be able adapt.

i'll mimic what everybody else is saying - you'll be fine without a mic. i've talked strategy with people by typing, it works fine. however, this is the *only* game to ever make me bust out my gaming headphones and use the mic. i've never wanted to hear or talk to the douchebags that i play with in COD4, BF2, etc. This game though really is fun to strategize with your teammates and having a mic just makes it easier. i've only played online with random people and i've yet to run across an idiot screaming into their mic or even just being an asshat by tk'in or fuckin around. from my experience the L4D community is pretty mature, and i've probably put in well over 30 hours thus far.

Guys - thanks much for the details. ;)

It sounds like a mic could be an asset, but not a necessity. I'm gonna go for L4D- looks like a blast!!

I bought a cheapish headset for this game.
1. for when I play with friends
2. because it's just easier to call out stuff than to type it most of the time.

But I did some play throughs on lower difficulties without a mic fine.

Is L4D only good if I have some friends to play along? How is the single player aspect?
The single player is merely passable. The cooperative AI is pretty, well, terrible. It isn't that the AIs are useless, per se, but you can't give orders and they can't take direction, which makes advanced difficulty levels impossible. There is no defined leadership aspect of L4D. During multiplayer, the leader is usually just the one who seems to have the most experience and takes it upon himself to give the most direction. I'm usually the one who directs when a team moves ahead or stays back depending upon the objectives and what the infected are doing, and I just use the built-in voice commands for that. Another person directs where we need to be and decides what tactics to employ. Seems to work pretty well.

You don't need "friends", specifically, to enjoy L4D online. What's really great about the matchmaking system is that it's very easy to quickly get into a game or a lobby based on your level of experience, and, generally, L4D players are in it to win. I've seen very little fucking around so far, but you do need to watch out for players who're playing at a higher experience level than they should be. If you want to join an Expert game, for example, be prepared to take it extremely seriously and give or take a lot of direction.

L4D is not a game where fucking around is considered "okay". Players will appreciate you taking it fairly seriously and playing as cooperatively as possible, which means protecting fellow survivors against the infected and healing them whenever you can. So far, I've had good luck with random players with respect to cooperative play. I honestly do feel like L4D players are a bit of a different breed than most, so there's that.

Heh, so are you saying FO3 is flawed? It would piss me off to no end to play a game...need to go, save, come back and find out my saved game isnt there.....
It was for me. I've seen a few other accounts where people have been dealing with savegame corruption, but I haven't seen anyone else experience the same problem I did. You can take precautions to make sure you don't get too terribly fucked if it should happen to you -- I just wasn't expecting it to axe my save games, so I didn't.

Fallout 3 is a decent game overall and a significantly better single player game than L4D.

Yea, I'd say a mic is definitely a plus, but not necessary. i only play with the mic sometimes, because the headphones on mine aren't great, and I like using my 5.1 system.

Also, a big suggestion to everyone: Use the auto voice comm, not press to talk. it makes things so much funnier, cus it will pick up when you or your friends scream like a little girl when a hunter pounces you, haha.
