Over the past few months, we’ve seen a disturbing trend from first Kingston, and now PNY. http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...itching-cheaper-components-after-good-reviews

What is it call. Going cheap?.

"When Tweaktown inquired as to the situation, PNY sent back the following: “Yes we did ship some Optima SSD’s with SandForce controllers, but only if they meet the minimum advertised performance levels."

Kingston has literally never been a decent SSD supplier because they have been doing this for the entire time they have been selling SSDs. OCZ and others did it as well, and you would have to be crazy to expect anything better from a brand like PNY which may be relatively well-known but which is only well-known for its low price, not for extraordinary quality.

Your link is over half a year old, also.

Put it this way: There is a damn good reason why many of us on this site will tell you to only buy an Intel, Samsung, Crucial, Plextor or (maybe) Sandisk SSD.
 
PNY and Kingston make pretty good thumb drives.

That's just about it. I thought everyone knew that? :D
 
And back in the real world, installed in your parents laptop...they will still be magnificent compared to that old 5400rpm HDD.

I've bought a lot of these so called 'sluggish' Kingston V300 SSDs for customers wanting to upgrade from the ultra clunky 5400RPM HDD in their laptops.

Not a single complaint. The only thing I hear back is "Wow it's so fast now! I love it!"
 
No kidding. When i have upgraded my build from my 1TB 7200 RPM HDD to the 60 GB SSD. My Windows 7 would boot up within 12sec. and every app i have installed would open up within 2 sec.or less with AV Installed.
 
Why are you selling people Kingston V300s when Crucial M500s and MX100s and such are so cheap and Sandisk even cheaper? I can't see any justification for buying a Kingston SSD now.
 
PNY was doing this last year same time Kingston got busted for it, nothing new, why neither company will ever get my money.

Obviously, but why support such shady companies when you can get better value for your money.

I don't care. Customers don't care. The V300 SSDs are the cheapest you can get in the UK ($10 cheaper than the same M100) and they are reliable. I've fails from Sandisk, Corsair and Crucial but the V300's keep on trucking.

Oh and still many times faster then the 5400rpm HDDs the customer has.

If I said to the customer "You know you can have SSD1 for $50 and SSD2 for $55 but SSD1 is slower...not that you will ever notice!" They will still pick SSD1 99 times out of 100. Especially when 95% of laptops and PCs that need upgrading are using SATA II chipsets anyway! Yes real world alert here...most people do not use 2014+ spec Alienware/Skulltrail type kit. They only have to be able to push 250MBps so that negates most of the performance debate and rests purely at cost.


You know sometimes in business you have to just rise above the fanboy butt-hurt/outrage.

I'm curious what's the longest 'cheap' drive you have in service? Once failures start coming in it's not going to be fun.
 
I have an OCZ 64GB thats still trucking fine. It was the first SSD I bought back in April 2011.

Just had a Sandisk Extreme fail (69 bad sectors RMA just accepted) that was bought August 2012.

The 120GB standard Sandisk SSD in my 5 year old Dell laptop is still fine. That was bought June 2012.

Haven't bought in many 'high end' SSDs as to be honest I think they are a waste of money for most average uses. Law of diminishing returns really.

I use SSHDs in my Win7 Pro day to day workstation. I might migrate to SSD in that when Windows 10 arrives.
 
JFC...this dead horse got dug up to get beat AGAIN?

PNY has had this info right on their product pages of their web site that they use multiple controllers as long as they meet the minimum performance specs for, well, since they began making that line of SSDs. They still use synchronous NAND, so they are about the best choice for a no-bones-about-it ultra budget unit when they go on sale and wind up significantly cheaper than the typical go-to brands and models we all post about.

Kingston, on the other hand...that was shady of them to do so long ago. Pure and simple.

It isn't fanboy butt hurt anything, it is me making a choice to support companies that don't try to screw over end users with shady practices.

People come to me and trust me to give them advice on products based on my knowledge and experience, and i provide that and always give options but i am sure if you also informed your clients that Kingston and PNY did a switch and "fluffed" their reviews when you tell them what they are buying, some may say no, get me something else, while sure, others will just say "will i notice anything..no, okay"
 
Pity the poor guy who bought a very cheap external hard drive in China, only to find that there was nothing inside but a seemingly cleverly configured 128MB USB Flash key. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/11/russian_duped_by_chinese_ssd_scammers/

I do not feel bad for those people who are buying SSDs, Flash Drive from China for a very low price. Only to find out it's nothing, but a modded chip-set inside.

I haven't had issues with my hyperx 3k. Has always seemed decent speed on my win7 box. With that being said, there is very little difference between v300's pricing & others on sale. I just wait for the sales & get a better quality SSD.
