Adafruit had offered up a $2,000 prize for an open-source Kinect driver, and apparently someone has already delivered. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Yeah. If the following video is legit it looks as though those security features and safeguards have been pretty busted

Did anyone bother to read the article? The $2000 challenge is for someone producing VGA video with depth information for the entire frame. This is just dumping the accelerometer values onto a PC screen. Nothing was delivered, just one person that got a small portion of the Kinect to display values on a PC screen.

don't be so negative man, its a start.

Its a start but getting video from it will be the real challenge so there is a lot of work to do.

This issue with this is that unless you are using the algorithms that Microsoft wrote to do this, it's more of a really freaking hard math issue than a reverse engineering issue. This kind of image processing is the sort of things that research scientists do.

Some of you guys act like its not even possible....

Anything is possible with enough time or money...or both.

Its 2010....err 2011.... get real. There's plenty of people out there able to do this. All they need is motivation.

I am rather certain that there were already people working on it before this bounty was put up. Just makes the incentive that much sweeter.

The guys who made the 3d imaging chip for the kinect are former Israeli military engineers. I couldn't help but think this same tech was used for warheads, UAV's, facial recognition...and entertainment!

This begs the obvious question, "What would you even want kinect on a PC for?"

I can't think of a single pc activity that I would want anything other then a mouse, keyboard or joystick for.

I bet there would be a lot of cool things you could do with it that we haven't even thought of yet. Such as... small-time game devs (MOD creators) doing their own Mo-Cap!

Well with proper depth information and some software to go with it, you could hook it up to a laptop and capture 3d models of large objects using a Kinect.

The amount of tech for $150 you get is not bad, could see uses for home automation etc. However, just getting camera feeds doesn't get you the sophisticated software stack that enables all the interesting uses for kinect, someone will have to build their own.

Also, this guy isn't planning to release the code from what I read elsewhere, he wrote drivers to integrate with his company's software suite.

Think TrackIR without having to wear a baseball cap with reflectors on it all the time.

I'd use it.

hope to see some cool sh*t on the PC

else :(

Like? No game will be able to officially implement it, because MS isn't going to release official drivers on windows, this is xbox exclusive.

It will be like using the wii controller on windows with the "hacked" drivers. You can do some neat things with it, like moving your hand to do things, and I've seen a video of someone playing hl2 with it emulating the mouse, but it looked to me like it was awkward to use.

Students doing tech type demos for senior projects will probably make some cool stuff, but nothing you can buy. Basically just google/youtube what kinda things you can do with the wii mote (and YES there is some neat stuff, remember the head tracking 3d display using wii motes, to produce very neat looking 3d stuff on a standard monitor using mostly just a wii mote? Now THAT would be super cool put into a game, but no one is doing it since its not official drivers) and figure you'll see a similar progression of stuff for this.

Something better to hope for is that this will show people potential applications for someone to bring to market a similar tool at a similar price. So a kinect clone, that IS officially compatible with windows.

How long until this gets hacked and people are spying through it?

As in someone hacks your xbox through the internet and watches you sleep? It's going to be a while. As far as someone writing a program to turn this into a nanny cam? That's possible now.

I think this is great, someone writes something they think can't be broken, and it's broken. Always nice to see the advances in programming and precautions. Weeds out a lot of little security flaws with the progress.
I actually hope there is a book out in the future on all the twists and turns used to bypass security and get at things so programmers could use it to better their work in the future. Of course nothing is ever perfect.

What about high quality head tracking without requiring awkward head-mounted devices or reflectors? You could use a Kinect to do that with extremely good results (since it captures true depth information), then simply feed the resulting data into the TrackIR API.

A large number of games already support TrackIR for head-tracking, which means Kinect instantly becomes usable in that same large number of commercial games. Totally do-able once a driver is written for the hardware.
