so interesting the highly variable experiences people have with brands. Mostly I hear about how excellent LG is and how awful Samsung is. Sorry to hear your negative experiences SunnyD
 
My GE top of the line monograms were literally POS, whether the dishwasher or fridge. Samsung /LG/Whirlpool/Kitchen Aid have been decent so far...

My parents have a bunch of LG and Samsung appliances, which I warned them against getting, and sure enough all of those things, from stove/oven to fridges to washer machine to dryer, all fucking failed. If it's not an HDTV then they both suck, and that has been true for a very very long time. Although in the early 80s my parents had a Samsung microwave that lasted an extremely long time. But modern day Samsung, I wouldn't trust their shit to last very long, and same with LG. I only trust them for HDTVs, and Samsung also for memory chips (DRAM, flash V-NAND, etc).

I miss the days of the old General Electric appliances like their refrigerators that would go 30-50 years without issues.

Most of what I hear about appliances from these two is a lack of service parts. Appliances don't last forever, but if service parts are available, they can be fixed and live for longer.

(And if you have to replace the compressor every 5 years, it's not a good time)

I got Whirlpool appliances with my new house about 10 years ago and hate all of them.

The refridgerator was terrible, just an all around bad design. It was french doors with a freezer on the bottom. The ice maker and water in one of the refrigerator doors. Since the ice maker was in the refrigerator door the ice kept melting the ice and leaking. So we just couldn't use the ice unless we wanted leaks. Then eventually the water resivoir developed a leak and leaked all over inside the fridge and on the floor. What a POS.

Our whirlpool washing machine broke and had to be replaced. The microwave barely lasted a year and had to be replaced, and the dishwasher inside is trash and breaking apart. Since the washing machine broke we had to get a new dryer because the wife wouldn't allow them not to match. So now I'm down to just a whirlpool oven and dishwasher. My wife can't wait to get rid of them.

The replacement washer and dryer are GE and I like those. The new refridgerator is Samsung and we like it a lot, actually we have a 2nd Samsung fridge in the basement. The replacement microwave is KitchenAid which when I bought it I didn't realize was owned by whirlpool so I was a little bit pissed after I found out, but it's held up fine and I like it.


I don't think any brand is actually just great, you need judge each model individually.
I think a lot of the bad rep brands get is from their lower end stuff. For example all my whirlpool stuff was low end base models and it all sucked. But their high end KitchenAid stuff seems good.

When people say "they don't make them like they used to" it's because you're buying the cheapest shit possible nowadays, the old stuff that "lasted forever" was 10X more expensive. If you're willing to spend that much you can still get high quality things that last.
 
When I bought my first house in 2010 I bought all new LG stainless appliances in the kitchen, sold that house last year and all are perfect working condition with no issues ever except the dish washer, that lasted 10 years before it died. Also bought front loading maytag washer and dryer, those also were still working perfectly when I sold the house. I hear the newer LG appliances are garbage, no personal experience though. Just bought new GE washer and dryer in the new house, 8 months and the door switch had to be replaced on the dryer, but surprisingly the warranty service was a breeze, did not even have to talk to a person, went to their website and was able to schedule a tech to come out, they showed up and replaced it in like 4 minutes and been working fine since.

I've had mostly good experiences with LG, GE, KitchenAid, Whirlpool and few others. I think it's just the nature of how inconsistently parts are sourced, how complex some of the devices are now, and how much shitty cost cutting is done at all levels (even supposedly premium $$$ appliances).

The biggest variances are on the specific models rather than the brand so you just have to be informed, check reviews like a hawk, and vote with the wallet since there is so little concern for the end-user / consumer. You can't trust any brand to maintain a certain level quality over their product range anymore.

Agreed, my GE monogram fridge at my first home was a nightmare, leaks from year 2 onwards, repaired it myself half a dozen times...

I have Speedqueen for washer and dryer, TOP notch made in the USA commercial units. total badass.
All my appliances in the kitchen are GE and were all replaced at the same time (remodel) all 13 years old, only thing that died was the control board on the microwave/oven combo 1 month ago. I could fix but the control board has been discontinued.

EDIT I will ONLY buy a side by side fridge. Not that french door horse sheet.
 
My C1 CB came through, so at 584 net, this would be an awesome deal even if it lasts 5 years without issue..has a full 2 years warranty anyways and recent feedback for this model is quite positive.

Yeah side by side is the best design, that's what both of mine are now. Really the only good option if you want an ice dispenser on the outside.

I guess at least my washing machine just stopped working. My brother had a Samsung top load washer that exploded and blew a hole through his wall. His wife was just in there 5 minutes earlier, it could have killed her. There was actually a recall on it but it came with the house they just moved into and they didn't know.

Coming up on 2 years, my LG dual-inverter AC unit is still holding up. Just wish I didn't have to reset the filter every week or two without fail (quirk of the firmware/hardware, if it's on at all it counts toward runtime, and it has a non-adjustable filter reminder for 250 hrs).
 
I've got an LG fridge I bought back in early 2013. The compressor is loud as fuck. The compressor being loud was a problem at the first house I had it in. Since then its been further away from the living room and therefore, not a big deal. The ice maker more or less failed a couple years ago. It does occasionally produce ice when it wants to but not with any regularity. I'll hear it dump ice once in awhile but mostly, the stupid thing is idle. I had shut it off and I'm not sure how it got turned back on. Lastly, the water pressure of the water dispenser took a dive about 6 years ago. It puts out about a 1/3rd the volume of water it should. It takes forever to fill up a cup of any size.

Probably either clogged with mold or iced. If ice, it could thaw occasionally, which might explain the sudden unexplained frozen fluid emerging rarely in normal grace (or, SUFFERING for short).

My problem with LG isn't parts, it's build quality and rapid failures. My microwave has several bits of plastic in several locations that have outright broken (vents, door handle, etc.) and several LED segments have died. This was within the first year.

The thermostat in one of the front burners on the stove now has a grand total of two settings: Fucking hot and off.

The freezer door often times pops open when you close the refrigerator door, even gently causing frost buildup in the freezer section. The back of the refrigerator often freezes its contents. I've also had many items spoil far sooner than they should as well, which tells me the insulation isn't consistent and/or there is air leakage somewhere.

The one thing that has been fairly consistent has been the dishwasher. It has pretty much worked, though there are a few annoying design flaws. Recently I've also had some quirky issues with the control panel, but nothing consistent or fatal.

For appliances that are 3 years old I'd say that's a horrible track record, especially when some of those issues occurred within the first year. The fact that they replaced 30 year old appliances... *sigh*
 
I can purchase (eligible for military) but I dont really think I need it.

My current fridge is an LG of the same exact size, same ice maker, same water dispenser, etc. My current fridge is a better model but its old (10 years'ish?).

I need a new fridge but I’m not sure I’m desperate enough to give LG another try. I loathe our Kenmore branded LG washer and dryer. It’s always something with them. Problems with other LG products too over the past 20 years.

Trying to talk my wife into a side by side next time instead of French Door bottom freezer too. So it looks like a good deal I just don’t know.

Which is funny, because my Samsung washer/dryer have been working great for the past 6-7 years.
 
The amount of complaining in this thread is truly unreal.

I managed indoor appliance showrooms for 10 years that did $5-6m in sales annually. LG had the lowest failure rate of any major fridge manufacturer and it isn't particularly close.

I had a handful a year that were problematic. Out of hundreds.

I imagine that people don't buy a lot of fridges with any regularity, and buying/installing/replacing one is a pain, so when they do buy one, and it fails for any reason... Well, I can imagine that they don't necessarily have the most reasonable reaction.

Right? microwave goes out or tv goes out sucks but whatever. Fridge or washer now i have to make sure whoever I go with can bring it up the stairs and also removes the old one and has availability to do this quickly.

Because they outnumber the sour-experiences exponentially; LG's failure rate was so much lower than Whirpool/Samsung that we actually lowered the cost of extended service plans for their refrigeration and laundry. That says a lot.

But as we all know, people are far more inclined to critique than to praise. You see it across all forms of feedback from consumers.

Well I think there was a big ordeal with the lg compressors recently, I remember seeing an article somewhat recently how the compressors were failing at much higher than normal rates and within a few years of purchasing, which would probably be outside the manufacturer warranty peroid. Not just LG branded refrigerators but any that were using the LG inverter compressor in them.
 
Reading this thread continue to confirm my bias toward oldest-simplest design (often mean cheapest) one....

Based on your experience, what were the most reliable fridge designs? E.g., side-by-side vs. french doors vs. drawer freezer, etc. I might need to get a new fridge soon, and I have my preferences but I also wonder if specific kinds of fridges are more or less prone to failure.
