I voted wrong. i forgot about the numerous P1's and slot 1 celerys ive demolished... there was a K6-2 in there as well (i loved that thing :( it just died one day :( ) the computer i punked it from had it running 633 mhz! but the mobo took a dump...

and i THINK i fried a 1.3 duron... never knew cause ive never had a confirmed working socket A mobo lol

turned a celery into a keychain....

ohh and the K6-2 met a VIOLENT second death? removed the cap. good bye core!

pentium MMX or two as well... (the celery 370 look alikes)

ive got two working celery 370's lying around here somewhere as well ^_-
 
Actually, I forgot the other CPU I killed.

I had a PII 400 that had a badly mounted heatsink on it. For the most part it seemed mostly stable and temps were okay. Anyway, my girlfriend at the time called me away from the computer for a bit and I decided to turn some tunes on so I brought up Winamp and jumped in the sack. About fifteen minutes later I thought I heard a weird noise but thought the bed was just making a new noise. Very soon after that the mp3s stopped playing. To skip to the end, the heatsink had managed to fall off the processor due to repeated vibrations, I guess. The CPU was obviously fried and it took the motherboard with it. I had to borrow a little money and it took a few days but I got my system up and running again with a Celeron 300. I ended up spending a bit more time in bed until the computer was up and running again.

 
I killed an Athlon 1800 Thoroughbred when they were the latest and greatest CPU on the market... We were building a system for my friend and I didn't realize how quickly they got hot, so just to make sure the motherboard and cpu combo was functional I powered it on without a heatsink for a few seconds, just to see if it would post...

Literally about 5 seconds without heatsink was all it was turned on for, and it started to smell bad. We turned it off but the damage was done, it was dead.

My friend returned it to Fry's Electronics for another one :p I bet they put it back on the shelf with one of those returned stickers on it...

Then there's the time my Dad put his heatsink on backwards... It had a cutout on one side for the hinge part of the socket, and he put it on backwards so one edge of the heatsink was sitting on the plastic socket, the other edge on the corner of the CPU core... Of course there was almost no contact between the cpu and heatsink and it fried in less than a minute.
 
I have fried 4 CPUS in my lifetime.
1 Intel > Accident> it was fried along with the mobo, the mobo rolled on its offsets and made a big short and the cpu was smoked along with it.

2 AMD > Accident>
1: I dropped a sock into a running pc on accident, and that shit just sparked like mad, cpu destroyed.
2: Overclocking accident, superheated, a small hole blew out the core, funny enough that the video card survived....

We found an old AMD Duron system, old and dirty, oc'd the hell out of it, lifted heatsink and we just watched the whole Socket sorta melt moving down the motherboard. GG. funny stuff.

well it was on purpose...haha I had this old PII based celeron, and I didn't want it anymore, so I keychained it, and took off all the pins. :p

 
1 500mhz k6-2, 2 950mhz spitfire durons, 1ghz morgon duron, 1.33ghz T-bird, 1600xp palomino, 1700t-bred, 2500xp,

now with a 2400xp thornton@2.5ghz. Not upgrading to athlon64 until like late next year.
 
I slowly killed a p75 by oc'ing it to 100mhz for like 6 years.
By the end, when my mother-in-law had inherited the machine, it was slower than a 486.
Must have fried too many little parts of the chip to make it work decent.
 
Never killed anything yet, cpus, mobos, hard drives, etc. I've OCed a Barton 2500+, Athlon 64 3200+ socket 754, and a Venice 3000+ s939 with voltage, even on stock cooling. No problems yet. My biggest problem ever was receiving a defective mobo from newegg. I've insanely OCed my Radeon 9800 as shown in sig(it does have modified cooling) -- no problems yet!!

Shipped a mobo/CPU combo with the HSF attached. Figured I'd packed it well enough. The cost of the CPU was less than the effort it would have been to detach/reattach the HSF. Live and learn. ;)
 
I killed a AMD64 3000+ when I tryed to install the heatsink with the plastic covering on it, and included way to much thermal paste so when I took it off it ripped the pins off the cpu, well live and learn I guess.
 
I just hope Kyle doesn't post in this thread. I believe it would double in length if he did so. That would just be from his T-Bird days too. :eek:

 
I killed a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ DLT3C. Came back one day, system didn't boot and that was the reason why. I had had a my best OC with that CPU too; guess it got too hot.
 
Killed a K6/2 years ago.

Installed my cpu and heatsink. Turned on my PC and fizz bang!

Of course I know now, that the "damn sticky stuff" I spent ages scraping off, is actually thermal interface material!!!

My 3800x2 is running at 2.65 with like 1.6 vcore(1.54 reported by bios) :D It's stable but who knows how long it will live.

All my old stuff still works, I think the p90 we gave away is still ok. I fried a bunch of RAM though.
 
had a 2100+, fried it when i was moving from home to school. turned on the comp and boom nothing :eek: . never had the pleasure of frying ram though :p

Few over the years. Usually when drinking. Last one I remember toasting was a 1.1tbird. Didnt get the heatsink on all the way.....more like I forgot to clip the other side on completely.

*sniff sniff* mmmm burning silicon.
 
i fried an old Aptiva 386 by flicking the little red switch at teh back of the psu

im surprised that more people havnt actuly killed a cpu the the people who have, almost everyone i know has killed at least 2 cpu's in thier life.
 
Crazy thread bump!

But yeah, I've killed a few in my time;

First death was a PIII 1ghz. After I had sanded it down a bit I later remounted the heatsink and put a big crack down the middle.

Next was a Palamino AlthonXP 2000+. My PC turned on without my water pump on and it literally burned to death.

After that I chipped a TbredA 2400+ AXP but that still lives today although it runs really hot and needs to be watercooled. I also similarly chipped a Barton Mobile 2500+ which I then killed trying to scrape off the super glue I'd put into the chipped area.

I've already knocked off a resistor on my current Opteron 146, but selotape keeps that in place now and it runs good.


So yeah, Total CPU deaths from me = 3
 
i just killed an Athlon 64 3200+ like two weeks ago... somehow managed to get artic silver thermal material remover under the IHS. or at least that's what i assumed happened. after i ruled out everything but the processor, we took off the IHS just for fun and you could see black marks where it had shorted out.
 
Yes.. Socket 754 Newcastle.

Condensation from a phase change chiller setup & poorly insulated water block. :(

Edit: Also cracked a Barton core thereby killing it. :(
 
Isn’t there a bios feature that’s supposed to shut the computer down when the CPU reaches a certain temperature?

Same here. I've killed CPU's on purpose for my own amusement, but never by accident or by chance.

Video cards on the other hand, I've fried a number of.
 
I had a shiny new AMD 1Ghz T-Bird when it first came out that I was putting in a mobo and accidentally turned the power on before I installed the heatsink. Instant fry, ASUS mobo with ALi MAGiK1 chipset(best at the time) died with it.
 
Killed an opteron 165 by chipping a transistor while removing the ihs... but that's ok, cause my new one overclocks better :-D

Only on certain cpus with a diode, mostly newer ones. The P4s had it and then the later XPs had it(despite Tom's Hardware's bullshit story they ran back then).

As others have noted, they do now. However, back in the days of my palomino AthlonXP, it just flat out didn't work. I had my mobo set to shutdown at the lowest setting (which was 65°c if I remember rightly) but it didn't kick in and the chip just got hotter and hotter till it literally popped and spewed out hot gas from one side scarring the base of my waterblock...

Fried a Celron 2.4ghz in an SFF that got an electrical surge. Tough to repair, so I am going to replace with something better.

It is the one that lasted 2 days when I got it, it is in my sig.

Killed a 486 DX2 back in the day.

Was cleaning the dust off the board, removed the CPU and put it back in. I didn't realize that the chip had to be oriented correctly. :D

Power on...pop...smoke...
 
Oh boy...

I have killed:

DX4/100 - honestly, it was only a small increase in volts!
K6-250 - fan failure on heatsink wasn't detected. Overheated
K6/2-500 - overvolted
Celeron 266 - overclocked till she puked (300a waiting)
Celeron 300 - overclocked too much, forgot it was 300 not 300a
Thunderbird 1.2 - chipped putting on HSF while motherboard in case
Barton 2500 - chipped when screwdriver slipped, motherboard NOT in case
P4 2.4C - Motherboard fried, taking chip with it (last Abit board ever purchased)
A64 3200+ Venice - First IHS removal, FUBAR'd

Oh, and I've only ever killed one videocard... an expensive one too. A 3 months old 8500 AIW (overclocked and ruined the core/memory, returning to stock still had severe artifacts).
 
I litterally pried the core off a Intel P4 Williamette when i'm trying to separate the heatsink from the cpu.

The good news is that it isn't mine but on one of a computer at my workplace and we got plenty of spare to use :p

Ohh, remember another one : I also chipped the corner of a Palomino belonging to my friend when i'm testing it because he told me it was not stable at stock speed. He didn't care and bought a new one since it's cheap and he wanted to get a new one anyway.
 
A old P4 (before HT) ripped the proc out of the socket when removing the IHS friggin thermal superglue.
