killed an athlon 2500+ . it had been replaced by a 939 and it was sitting on my desk when my girlfriend and i decided to 'break in' the desk after i had gotten back from 3 weeks of airborne school in GA. with a sweep of her arm she shoved everything sans monitor off the desk and i ended up stepping on it with my army boots during the ensuing ruckus. needless to say gluing the pins back on was not going to bring the thing back to life. my old logitech keyboard and my animatrix dvd were also subsequently destroyed. the good news from it all? shes still my gf 3 years later...and im running an a939 3500+ (tower was safely under the desk).

i did that on my x2, well, not with a screw driver, but i busted quite a few resistor packs, thing still works perfectly lol
 
an Athlon XP 1700. Basically, installed the stock heatsink with the blue mylar tape covering the thermal pad. This, after I could have sworn I already pulled off a piece. Took about 2 seconds to die after powering on the computer.

The only type of CPU i ever killed was the Thunderbird. I probly Killed 3 or 4 of them in my time.
 
Killed a P3 500. I cut out the back of the PSU to put an external fan on it(those darn case temps were just too high) and took the fan off and never covered up the hole I had cut into the PSU. Went to pull it out from under the desk one day, reached arround to lift it up and suddenly my arm was no longer under my control as my fingers went INTO the PSU and hit the guts. Those things sure do pack a punch:) Fried the whole thing and got a little more respect for electricity.

:( People have died from opening up PSU's. One person on this forum has a pacemaker as result of a run in with a PSU. :( Glad you only got a jolt and not something more serious.
 
Had a board go south and take a 1ghz tbird, 512mb of ram and a hard drive with it. Only time I had a board take anything with it when it died, and I've had a few board failures. Never physically damaged or burned a chip o/c'ing though.
 
Yep. 3500+ newcastle... RIP. I was hooking up my prometia for the first time for use as my 24/7 rig. Got the lian li kit and got the prometia all dressed up. I thought I would need to cut a hole in the mobo tray for the mounting bracket to fit through. Once I got the mounting hardware all set on the board, it seemed once i screwed it onto the tray, there was enough "give" on the tray when the board was screwed down.I thought I'd be able to skip cutting a hole in the tray for the mounting bracket to protrude through. Anyways, I think even though i covered the mounting screws with the black goo, the pressure allowed metal on metal contact. My speaker wire was all burnt, which leads me to believe I created a short. Dead board and cpu. RIP.

Lol, had a T-bird 1Ghz @ 1.25Ghz, ran great for 3 years, then I chipped the core taking the heatsink off one time... Actually, it MAY still work, but after seeing the chip in the core I havn't used it...
 
I forgot about the 20 or so from when I was 7 through 11 [believe it] were all P-1 200's :D

Killed a 2500+ barton once by messing up when cutting a bridge. I went too far and cut the packaging a it. It never posted again.

Even though it was unethical, I RMA'd it and got a new one.
 
I haven't. But my dad killed a few back in the day when there wasn't any markings telling you how the chip went in. :D
 
killed a 286, chip stacking,(piggy backing) got the seconed on backwards... DOH

killed a 386 was going from 16mhz quartz clocks to 20mhz quartz clocks... forgot the one on the scsi controller....

killed a 486dx... just fell out of the scoket....

killed a ppro 60mhz it pissed me off so i pryed it out of the socket with a screw driver... then intel said they had a problem with the floating point.. i was pissed...

killed a p1 133... ran it at 160... worked, ram burnt up and took the cpu with it

killed a p2-333 direct die W/C + a chiller had it up to almost 600 (i beleve it was 598... but im not shure... ) one day it just.... stopped...

almost lost a s940 a64 to a friend ... thought he could just cut off the extra pin to make it work in a 939 mobo....

was messing with the mainboard and took off the heatsink. went out with some friends for a while, came back and switched on the PC. 5 seconds later relalised i'd never put the HS back on.
smoky goodness was to be had from the cpu
 
Back in the days of the early Athlons I killed 2 1.0Ghtz cpus the same day from cracking the core.

Bad, bad day.

Anyway, I never killed a CPU but by 'old age'.

The only CPU I have ever killed was caused by a bad mobo. I had someone bring in their non-working K6-2 system and I was troubleshooting it. I ended up taking a K6-2 333 I had and tossed it in the board. Little did I know, the mobo had fried the other CPU. When I turned it on it quickly cooked my 333 but not before I was able to check out the voltages. It was putting something like 3.5 volts to the CPU which wasn't supposed to run anywhere near that. The poor guy died right after I checked the voltage.

Afterwards, I took the 333 and pried off the heatspreader. In the process of doing that, I managed to crack the ceramic packaging of the CPU. I ended up just destroying the CPU which made me feel better. Other than that, every CPU that I have gotten my hands on kept working.

I thought I had fried my T-Bird 900 at one time. No matter what I did, I could not get the thing to boot back up one day during some overclocking attempts. I ordered a T-Bird 1.2 to replace it and when I put that in, the system still wouldn't boot. I ended up setting the multiplier and FSB using the dip switches on the board which allowed the system to boot with the 1.2. Just to doublecheck, I put the 900 back in and it booted just fine, also. Ended up selling the 900 as I had no way to use it at the time and kept using the T-Bird until I swapped with someone for a 1.33 which I could run at 1.57 stable and is still running to this day at 1.4 on an ECS board.

 
October 13th, 2005, i finally build the comp in my sig. Until then, I had a dell. P2 400 MHz, 96MB RAM, STB nVidea ZX 8MB vCard, some sound card and an ISA Modem, and a 10GB 5400RPM ATA-33 HDD that im still using. oh an of course optical/floppy drives, but i don't remember what all came with it. Anyways, after building my comp, I decided to torture my P2 like it did me (really slow, even for a P2) :D. I OCed it to like 600 something, took away the heatsink and the fans, and watched it BURNNNNNNN!!!!!! well it didn't really burn, but it suddenly quit working :D:D:p
 
crushed my golden unlocked barton 2500+ die by installling all copper HSF in a wrong way. :rolleyes:
 
for me, it would be an AXP 2600+ barton, had trouble getting the aluminum heatsink on bc it only used the single clips instead of the three that i was used to and wen i finally got it on, i forgot to plug in the fan and it booted into XP and was running for a good five minutes while i stepped outside and my brother heard a beeping and left it running :(

Killed a celeron 466(oc)630, it was bound to die after all the stress I put that poor thing through. I also killed a 1ghz P3, which I really regretted. Fried after a bad application of thermal grease. I didn't even oc the thing.
 
I've killed a few chips overclocking them. Most died on air but I have had a few chips die with water cooling(yet none with direct die water cooling).
 
I chipped the die on my XP1800 Palomino. Was changing to a quieter fan on the Alpha PAL8045. Had been working on a friends old slow 486DX that they wanted to try and use for internet...... :confused: was very impatient and should have cooled my temper off. Couldn't find my small screwdriver that fit throught the access holes on the fan and went at the screws at an angle.....to much pressure on the big Alpha resulted in a "no post" when I went to boot it. :rolleyes: :)

Replaced it with an A7N8X Deluxe and Barton 2500. The Epox 8KHA+ is still running with an XP2400 after a few years of service.
 
I killed a Cyrix 5x86 by putting it in a cheap-ass motherboard.
Then killed a 400Mhz. celeron by putting too much voltage through it.
