keeping hard drive outside during winter

is the hard drive in a box or something? or are you just going to set it out on the porch?
 
I leave my server in my garage, it's generally a few degrees warmer than the outside temperature inside their but the system is running 24/7. I live in the South, usually doesn't get much colder than 20s late at night, but not too often.

if it rains or gets snowed on. they are not really intended to be water proof or environment proof. but what the hell, if you have one of those hoarder houses then definately keep it outside in case a mountain of junk falls on it.

So I wouldn't go below 32F while it is running. Check the manufacturers website they usually list the operating temp.
 
If a person would be uncomfortable in a room then a PC usually would be too..

I think the problem your going to run into is Heat + cold makes moisture wich inturn is going to wreck the drive.

also why would you just put a HDD on the porch for the winter? what kind of sense does this make?
 
He might be referring to his entire computer as the "Hard Drive", rather than just his HDD. Some people do that. Either way, I'd say no. As has been said, condensation can form in such a situation, and water is generally no good for electronics. It probably wont kill it, as the water most likely wouldn't form directly on the circuit boards/disk drives, but it's really not worth the risk just for the cooler running temperatures. Keep it inside.
