The other day I was given a motherboard and processor . My plans are to turn this thing into a linux router and I want it to run folding as well. But I am not sure how well it will perform.

Specs:
DFI® K6XV366 Motherboard
AMD K6-2/500AFX Processor
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet Adapter PCI
Creative Sound Blaster VIBRA 16XV CT4170 ISA (No onboard sound and I have it lying around)
NEC 8x CD-ROM
NEC 1.44MB Floppy
I'm undecided about video card. Might throw my 3DFX Voodoo 3 in there, might buy a new card so I can keep my dual display setup on my primary computer.
Lucent Modem, might buy a new one if I can gather the cash.
Maybe 64Mb of RAM, yet undecided.
15.7GB Seagate Hard Drive.

If I call in a favor I can get an extra 64MB(2x32). I still need a case and PSU. Might be a few weeks before I have this system up, but I'm preparing ahead of time.

Anyone ever fold on one of these? If so, how well did it perform?

Well, back in the day that was a nice setup. I’m sure it will make a fun router project but if I recall a 500 mgz anything will have problems finishing Folding work units on time.

There are “timeless” units that will run on it and if your patient it will produce. Give it a shot, you get a router and the team gets some more power. :D

Luck

It'll fold. It won't be fast but it will fold. :)

What kind of memory does that board take? I may be able to find some old stuff that would work in that board if you need it.

It takes unbuffered PC-100. I've got a 64MB stick I can put in, and might be able to get 2x32MB sticks from a friend.

It doesnt bother me if it completes them on time, just as long as it completes them.

I don't think the K6-2's were too good at folding. I think it was due to the weak FPU on the things. It will fold though, just make sure it's setup for the "Timeless Tinkers". That way you don't have a problem with finishing them on time.

Could I overcome the weak FPU by overclocking? Average overlclock is 567MHz, but I've seen some that have gone up to 600+MHz.

I seem to have run into a snag with this box, my search for a case is proving fruitless. :(

Yup, overclocking will help, just remember to keep it cool. Use a good HSF and watch your temps. Folding is stressful.

Set your software for the "timeless" wu's and let it rip....er fold :D

How would I go about setting it for timeless wu's on the non-graphical text only console?

should fold just fine, i have an old HP with a k6-2 333 and it hasn't missed a deadline yet, though it does take a long time to finish a WU. a 500 shouldn't have any trouble meeting deadlines.
