and I wanted to try the badge thing, to see if it would work.

Anyway, I am in just an incredible, delirious awe of some of these farms that I have seen. I have a few pc parts laying around, so I'm planning on building a linux server, but after that, I may start building a farm just to fold. I have 3 desktops and 1 laptop hooked up already, so I'll be moving up, hopefully.

drdeutsch

EDIT: Nope. badge doesn't work yet. Can someone explain this to me? I've got the "javascript..." thing bookmarked on my Firefox toolbar...

Congradulations and welcome. Always a good day when new people start folding!
And don't worry, it does'nt take a "big farm" to move up in the ranks, just a few every day computers.

For the badges, goto www.hardfolding.com
click folding@home stats
find your name (its in order of rank).
click your name
goto the bottom of this page, and it should say something like
"To get your own [H]ard|Folding Forum Badge simply highlight and copy the code listed below, paste the code directly in the body of the message and you're done."

~Hope this helps

welcome to the folding mayhem ;) it always starts out as 3-4 computers then you start borging things then you get your calculator and hairdryer folding then you start looking at your car wondering if you could get F@H installed on it somehow;)
well nevertheless welcome fold on

You can find information on adding the badge bookmark to the toolbar here. Have you turned in any points yet, as the badge doesn't work until you have some points that hardfolding.com is reporting.

You'll also want to make sure you're using the standard forum interface, not the WYSIWYG editor.

Edit: Welcome to the team!

you can if you have a "carputer" :)

Welcome to the show.....step right up and get your tickets.......come and see the foldin freaks! :D

How's about 7400Ghz to help the [H] out?

SO with my cable modem online (now) and all the PC's (I have in boxen) I've thrown my 3 PC's with 7400Ghz into the [H]orde ring! Even cranked one of them up to about 85-90% CPU since it's just my server (for file storage).

Are you serious about that # of GHZ?

Welcome aboard, be carefull of the addictions though ;)

Fold on

Dell PowerEdge 600SC Intel P4 2.4 533 (Cranked to 85-90% for folding) 1152MB RAM
Custom Built 2.8C Intel (OC'ed to 3.2) 1024MB RAM
Custom Built AMD 2200 (1800Mhz) 512MB RAM
So yeah no joking

That's 7400MHz, not 7400GHz. :p

Pay attention. :D

TYPO! Yeah sorry my bad  Please accept my consolences for stupidity.

But now the Fiance wants to know why I'm doing this "Folding thing"... I tried explaining it... she doesn't get it.

With an additional 7400GHZ I think we could take on every other folding team out there combined. ;)

Great to have you aboard though. Welcome to the addiction

I'd suggest getting used to that.... it gets worse when you start trying to borg obscure things, and then you end up with a pile of old P3's in a corner, and it just goes downhill (or uphill in our case) from there! ;)

Got my first badge today sweet. Just added another boxen that'll hopefully crank better in the evening that what it's doing during today. Hopefully have 2 more on the way at the parents house that'll be nice to add those results. Will post back when I have the full specs on what I'll be cranking...

Here's my first offical (after testing) badge in a post :)

No need to start another thread, figured I'd just revive the "newbie" type thread.

My first WU's for my main 3 boxen took less than 12 hours, now the ones they are working on are taking over 24 hours? The first 3 showed 500 total I don't know "steps" and these are 400 but are taking FOREVER am I doing something wrong? Does one 400/500 vary from one to another with the same amount of CPU working on them? Just more complex?

Thanks

The first question would be, what kind of hardware, specifically CPU's are you using?

WU's vary from architecture to architecture, and the best example of this is the Tinker core proteins (FAHcore_79.exe I believe). These fold about twice as fast on AMD's as they do on P4's. Also, such cores like QMD's (FAHcore_96.exe) are only on the Intel platform at this time.

So the breakdown of what you get and how it will fold on your box will vary quite a bit depending on what you're running, and what it's folding. Thats why we recommend using software like EMIII or one of the various other monitoring tools, as it gives you a ton of information about what you're chewing through and whether or not there might be a problem.

WUs can take anywhere from 12hrs (usually ~60pts) to 5+ days (QMDs and 600 poniters). Like Phantom said, it all depends on what you get from Standford and what they are running on.

In EMIII check the point calcualter and see the Points Per Day (PPD) you are getting from your machines and that will tell you if they are running as they should.

Hope that helps.

Fold on fellas!

I have several folding now (in the last day) but the 3 that have completed WU's I spoke of are:

Dell PowerEdge 600SC Intel P4 2.4 533 (Cranked to 85-90% for folding) 1152MB RAM
Custom Built 2.8C Intel (OC'ed to 3.2) 1024MB RAM
Custom Built AMD 2200 (1800Mhz) 512MB RAM

And I just did basic graphics install of:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/Folding@Home503.EXE

(I switched the AMD2200 To the console version because the graphic version bombed out after it's first WU)

Could it be the setting that asks me something about 5MB units? I think I said "yes" to the AMD2200 when I installed the console version

Yes that is the correct option. You might want to swtch them all to the console version, register them as a windows service that way you don't have a window cluttering up your desktop and you can monitor them in EMIII. I saw a great jump in PPD and stability with the console version.

Hope that helps.

ill bump the thread, subtract the amount of cpu's you have running from the total number

speak for yourself.... :D

450 Point QMDs are taking my P4 in my sig 18 hours.

in any event, certain WUs take longer on certain CPUs. Generally faster CPUs do the work faster, but not always.

I was going off what I read in the past on the QMDs (don't remember where I read it). Wonder why my P4 laptop hasn't picked one up yet. Oh well, thanks for the correction..

you have to set to recieve bigunits and run the client with the -advmethods flag to get them. and I dont think that they would be all that good for a lappy.

QMDs want LOTS of FSB and lots of memory. I routinely utilize 300-400 meg for FAH. and My FSB is a quad pumped 276. mobiles still have low FSBs and would probably choke.

Ya, now that I check CPU-Z it's saying it only runs at 100MHZ FSB so I should pull my -advmethods.

CPU-Z also claims that it's a P4-M which I don't think it is. It's a PGA478B but I really don't know. I know I only get about 2 hours our ot the thing.

2 hours sounds about right.
Remember, there is a diffrence between the Pentium 4M and the Pentium M, huge diffrence.(they are two diffrent processors)

Grimmda, the Total frames means nothing for how long it takes, or how many points it is worth.

A 400 frame 240 point work unit is not worth more then a 100 frame 600 point work unit  .

Although, having said that, you will still see your specific machine do better on certain types of work units. Sometimes the diffrence is'nt much, sometimes its huge.
I have a Pentium M and it can go anywhere from 150PPD to ~450PPD (points per day). Depends on what its folding, although it averages 225 on almost everything.

Thanks for answering my questions guys, good stuff.

I just added another 1.5Ghz to the garden tonight and have another 750mhz comming tonight/tomorrow.

Not bad for a newbie who started this weekend :)

Most certainly wonderful additions, just wait though, before you know it, you'll be talking like that every day... "You see that blender.. bet it will fold, see that nightlight.. its folding..." and so it goes. :D

No, no. That's not that big of a deal. You know you're really starting to get it bad when you're trying to teach your 4 year old how to stealth borg so he can get his babysitter's computer and her husband's laptop.

I think after he's done with those, we'll move on to the the other kid's parents' systems. It's just so hard to resist a cute little kid. So soon, I should be able to borg THE WORLD!!!

Oh, shit. Did I just reveal my plan for world domination?

You used to be cool when you could install Linux on random shit. Nowadays, a Linux fridge isn't cool anymore, you need a borged fridge.

I'm still working on a borged fridge with SLi and an X2. It'd actually stay cool that way..

And y'know, I think I may just go around and see if I can pick up a cheap college-style minifridge somewhere. Wicked OC time, especially when I water-cool it *in* the fridge.

Eh, that's old hat. I'm waiting for the day we figure out how to borg our brains. :D
