just ordered a new core i7 setup.. cooling question

You'll need an adapter for it since the socket layout is a bit different. Once there's an adapter (if there isn't one already) you'll be able to use it.

Xigmatek's socket 1366 bracket for the HDT-S1283 isn't due out till December.

yep, got an email back from Xigmatek..

Hi Shawn,
The new bracket for i7 LGA1366 socket will be available soon from Xigmatek.
Our current scheduled release date is in mid-December.
Thank you for your patience and support.

I've been thinking of the same sort of setup...are you at all concerned about the sideways nature of the fan and the passive cooling of the other board components? The asus webpage suggests that their intent was to have what I would call a traditional top down fan HSF so that the air washes over the passive sinks after it gets away from the CPU.

Using a tower cooler like the Xigmatek is not particularly detrimental to the cooling of the motherboard's components. As long as your case has decent airflow, it's best to use a superior tower cooler on the CPU and allow the case fans to handle cooling the mobo components, rather than using a top-down cooler that will end up doing a worse job of cooling the CPU, just to get a bit more airflow over the components that probably won't benefit much.
