I just built my new pc lastnight. I got the parts from newegg.

The parts are as follows:

Mobo = MSIK7N2V
Psu = Barton 2500+
Memory = 2X 256 crucial pc 2100
Video = Sapphire 128MB
Fan = K7 Volcano 11+

Here are my POSSIBLE problems.

1) SOMETIMES The unit will NOT post if I have both sticks of RAM in. After I remove one, it will post. This generally happens after I shut it down, and the comp sits for a while.

2) I have my temperature warning level at 145 degrees. Sometimes while playing games, I can hear the warning beep, I immediatly close the game and restart the pc, and check the temp. It's right around 140. Also, in Setup, when I watch the temp it rises and falls drastically. Did I just not apply enough thermal paste? The fan has variable speeds, and it even does it on the highest mark.

Thanks for all your help in Advance.

Just so you know, the Barton 2500+ (and all Bartons, for that matter) require at least PC2700 DDR to function properly at their native 166mhz FSB. Make sure the bottom of the heatsink is sitting flush on the core of the CPU.

Well, it could be that you put too much. You have to apply a very thin layer of thermal paste usually with a credit card.

For future reference, most of us if not all of us around these forums speak celsius. The deal with your temps spiking and falling drasticaly is because your reading the temps from the CPU's internal diode. This is normal. When the CPU comes under load, the die's internal temps will shoot up and when it sits idle for even just a second or so, it will drop down. I personaly use the sensor that is located in the socket. 140F = 60C, this is well within the normal operating range for the temps measured with the internal diode.

As for the above comment about puting too much paste on. This is a common thing said around here. Putting "too" much paste on at the most will raise temps one or two degrees. The amount of pressure applied by the HSF clip will push out any extra paste. So don't worry about it, it will settle to the amount needed.

Putting on to much paste can be a danger, since some types are more conductive than others, you may end up shorting something.

UPDATE:

I took off the HS and to my suprise, WAY TOO MUCH PASTE. I took the paste off, applied new paste to HS and made it PAPER THIN.

New temps are reading steady around 110-120, still not the best, but better than it was.
