just another OC story

you know, I've been somewhat of an OC'r for some time now. I don't claim to know everything--sheeit if anything but still, I always felt I knew enough about the fundamentals to OC pretty decently.

That said, I've not been able to really OC my current computer for crap since building it. The ram, though not the best quality could barely do above its rated speeds.

The highest OC to date is approx 2400mhz on this rig--unstable I might add. That, with a FSB of 215--anything more would kill my machine. Sometimes, I'd have to reinstall the OS due to corruption--and I'd be kicking myself all the way.

Over the last couple of days, I ditched my raptors and 80G HD. I also ditched my 800Pro that I purchased way before the infamous XL cards.

I know quality matters but more importantly I think its safe to say I should of noted the signs--not that my CPU or RAM could not handle OCing but my HDs were probably more the culprits with the VC next in line to my oveclocking woes.

I'm much happier with my XL card-it OCs 450ish/550ish and of course it has the 16 PLs.

I'm even more happier with my new OC. My rig can now go past 235 FSB-still testing and I've been able to play and OC past 2550. Nothing phenominal but heck, I've never been able to do that.

The point of this thread is two fold--to excercise my right to be happy and tell you all.

The other, well, little signs like HD crashes or video artifacts can be the reason why you can't OC more than u think ya should. I think some of us overlook that and buy new processors because we think we purchased an average CPU.

Everyone yeilds different results I know.

I know now that when I OC for my next build, its going to be with the minimal amount of harware installed. This would of saved me many reinstallations and headaches.

Is it possible that you had your HDD's connected to ports that were not locked. I've heard that only 2 of the 4 ports on some of those MSI boards are locked with the PCI bus and the other 2 are not. So it seems that you had your drives in the "bad" ports and experienced HDD corruption when the bus speed reached too high of a level. Just a thought. I'm glad you got the results you wanted though .

hmmm, sounds good...

right now, i can only get my newcastle to 219FSB anything past 220 crashes out so i'm jealous there....

also, what did you do with the raptors??

I traded one and sold the other. Got me a 250Gb for the price I paid for the raptor.

And my mobo for some reason reacted funny with the old HDs...not sure why as they're supposed to be PCI locked. Oh well. I think I could go 250FSB but that'll be a free upgrade later on lol.

I also have a newcastle 3500 and my OC performance (discussed in detail in another thread) is pretty similar. 2.4GHz is barely stable - good enough for games but not good enough for prime. In my case it's clearly the CPU since the mobo goes up to at least FSB=320 and my mem is tested stable up to FSB=267. However, my CPU is only truely stable up to FSB=215 (with stock 11 multiplier) and semi-stable (games) for a little bit over that.

It is true what the other person said about the locked/unlocked sata ports. If you have a MSI Neo2 then ports 1&2 (farthest from the CPU) are unlocked. Use port 3 or 4 (closest to CPU) which are locked ports.
