Just a question about Audio drm.

One of my clients asked me if I knew how to get his Zune pass files to play on his Android phone. Now granted i know you can strip drm but since it is a client I told him it was illegal because he is basically renting the music. This question got me thinking though about what actually does the work when you strip drm. See when you convert a movie the software will use either the gpu or codecs in the cpu to do the job faster and I guess what i am wondering is if it matters if you have a fast as hell cpu, gpu, or does a separate sound card help? This is really just my tech geek mind at work wondering if at this day and age does it even really matter? I mean will a core i7 2600k at 4.8ghz strip drm at the same speed a 1.6ghz dual core atom? Like i just said I am just curious. I understand if no one has an answer.

huh. i thought you were gonna ask how to get them onto the android without stripping DRM (which is doable, last i checked..)

whenever i've used programs, it seems the ability to parallel process is more useful than raw power. a hex-core @ 2.8 seems to go faster than a dual core @ 2.8.

oh, and as for the method.. import the zune library into WMP, make sure the files play, then add the files to the android device using the sync feature. it should transfer the drm.

My age old method is to convert everything to .WAV, then convert to whatever format is needed.

Can you go further into the sync from windows media player because I have to get a new phone in the next 4 months or I lose my upgrade and if Sprint doesn't get a Windows Phone 8 device before then I have to go Android myself.

Your CPU does all the processing when you're transcoding music, I'm not aware of any GPU or sound card that helps w/that or any codec that leverages that kinda hardware. If you convert lossy files (MP3) to WAV and back to MP3 you're taking a hit in quality.

As for Zune, are we talking about Zune Pass rented music here or what? Because AFAIK the music that you buy directly from the Zune store is unencumbered by DRM, they haven't used any in years... I used to buy from the Zune store before Amazon came around, then started buying from Lala, then Apple bought and sunk them, then started buying off Amazon.

I'm not sure the stuff you download w/a Zune Pass subscription would ever work on an Android phone though...
